Slater expected to re-sign today, Pats working on a few other deals

Good to hear.. Slater has been an outstanding special team player outside of the 2 fumbles as a rookie..

I still hold out hope he'll be more than just a valuable special teamer one day, but I'm happy to have him back in that capacity. He's one of those players worth more to the Patriots than he would be for another team, so it's probably a good deal for both parties.

Great news on Slater as long as he's never used as a returner again

Indeed... This might be worthy of its own thread if there's actual interest. It kind of seemed to me that the 2nd round tender was meant to tempt a QB needy team into making such a move. Given the number of 2nd round picks who are busts it's a worthwhile risk for many teams.

Hopefully that means the Patriots have confidence that Mallet could continue to develop (though I'd think they might bring in a veteran QB in camp as well if Hoyer were not here)

Patriots make minor move to open 2012 free agency, re-sign LB Niko Koutouvides to 1-year deal, reports ESPNBoston's Mike Rodak.

Locking up the ST players first?

oh yea, don't you just love having the worst return teams in nfl history? Maybe we can get lucky and they'll find someone that can make it to the 22 yard line every time instead of just the 20...

I don't really think its news. Hoyer is a RFA. He wants to see if there is a job for him as a starter. Yeah. Were you expecting him to say he only wants to be a backup so don't call if you need a starter? Its really not more than that; every backup searching for work would like to start.

I have two words to fix that Chris Rainey........Hopefully available in the 4th

As for the Hoyer situation that is interesting....I'm glad Slater is back truly a lethal ST Gunner.....

Hopefully Anderson and Carter are among the other contracts getting worked out...maybe a surprise or two.....hey one can hope

In history? Do you have any facts to back that up? I agree he hasn't been spectacular, but one of the worst of all time? Really? You might be one of the worst posters of all-time. I have little proof of that like you have on him. How many good tackles has he had on the other side of the ball? What kind of disruption has he caused when given the opportunity?

Provide some definitve information or STFU. He's a good kid and gives everything on every play he gets a shot on. If he didn't do that and conduct himself professionally he would have been gone a long time ago.

Blasting Slater won't win you any freinds on this site.

Interesting that Niko K. signed so fast. He must have a better chance of making the roster than I was thinking.

Slater signing is among the least surprising news of the off-season. He's a Pro Bowler and captain in his prime, and he's cheap.

Niko apparently signed over the weekend

That would be good.

If our only significant offseason losses are:

1. BJGE
2. One of Koppen/Connolly
3. Faulk's retirement
4. Maybe Hoyer

we should have a good offseason.

No, Guyton is not a significant loss. :)

Edit: I was forgetting about Light, but the point still stands.

Exactly. It's not like there's a tremendous number of holes on this team.

That said, I would've liked to see a WR signed, and the guy I wanted (which was reasonable) was Wayne. I don't think they'd have given him anything better than a 2 yr deal though, but the money is pretty much where I expected. I hope that they can possibly get Lloyd, although I'm not getting my hopes up either.

With the Redskins signing Garcon, Morgan, and now looking at Eddie Royal, is there any chance that Jabar Gaffney would be available? I'm being totally serious. I think that Gaffney already has a great knowledge of the system, and a good chemistry with Brady. In this case I'm actually hoping that the Redskins sign Royal too, just to make it a realistic thought.

Wouldn't it be funny if Rappaport and Lombardi had the wrong Bryant?

The scent of Tom Condon is in the air too.
