Patriots could be targeting Rams RFA WR Danny Amendola

Brandon Lloyd may not be the only receiver from the Rams whom the Patriots are targeting in free agency.

Tom Curran of CSNNE.com explores the possibility that the Patriots could have an eye on Danny Amendola, a restricted free agent whom the Rams tendered at the second-round level.

If the Patriots are interested, they’d need to sign Amendola to an offer sheet and then, if the Rams chose not to match the offer, ship a second-round draft pick to St. Louis. That may seem like too steep a price for Amendola, who was lost for the season with a Week One elbow injury last year, but maybe it wouldn’t be: Although he didn’t get a lot of attention on a bad Rams team, Amendola was a solid possession receiver who caught 85 passes in 2010.

There are a lot of similarities between Amendola and Wes Welker, and the Patriots could see the 26-year-old Amendola as Welker’s heir apparent in their passing game. Signing Amendola could make the Patriots feel more comfortable about merely keeping Welker on his one-year franchise tender, rather than signing him to a more costly long-term contract.

A second-round pick is a high price to pay, but if Amendola could be anywhere near the receiver in the Patriots’ offense that Welker has been, it would be a great deal.

Amendola might actually be a pretty good idea. The guy has the potential to be Wes Welker 2.0. Welker isn't going to be here forever. Might as well look at him to see if he is worth it. I am not advocating it, but it might be worth a look.

Problem with going for a tagged FA is that Pats have to wait 7 days to see if the present team responds. Lots of FA opportunities whiz by in that timeframe when you've locked up a good portion of your cap money in reserve.

Surprised no one has jumped to the conclusion that Amendola is plan B if they decide to jettison Welker and use the cap space elsewhere. I don't like the idea but I can see that being the thought process here.

The good news is that few people will pursue a tendered RFA. The Pats won't even have to consider Amendola until early April. The free agency frenzy will slow down by then.

That is the assumption on any free agent whether they are RFA or UFA. If a free agent doesn't want to play for the Pats, it really doesn't matter if the Pats have to wait seven days to sign him or when they have to make the offer.

The issue here would be playing time. With Welker returning, either Amendola would end up being underused or the Patriots would have to do some combination or more 4 wr sets and sets with Welker as an outside receiver (which I'd like them to get away from).

Lets be clear. This is not INFORMATION that the Patriots are interested in Amendola. It is an article by Tom Curran saying he thinks they should be interested. Just pure speculation of who Curran would predict they may show interest in.

I think BB would certainly entertain this idea:

Sign Lloyd, sign Amendola

Trade Welker for picks

Lloyd/Amendola might cost $3.5-$4.5M more then Welker combined. We could net more in pick(s) then Amendola costs us.

We've avoided the risk a small 31 year old (in June I believe) with an injury history implies with a guy that's 5 years younger, and increased the depth of our rec corps. All we have to do is draft a TE this year or next year to cover the two TE squeeze coming. It's unlikely we can afford both w/ Lloyd and Amendola both under contract.

I'd think I'd like my 4 prime recs to be: Lloyd, Amendola, Gronk, AH over Gronk, AH, Welker, and Ocho/Branch/Kid/lower tier FA.

Danny Amendola has nothing on Wes Welker for one thing he makes Wes Welker look a heck of alot faster. How do you catch 85 balls and dont even have 800yds?? Obvilously Amendola cannot break a tackle to save his life. BB we want SPEED! at WR not tortoises.
