All offseason, Brandon Lloyd's discussion about his future included a subtext that's gone something like this: The Patriots want me. I want the Patriots. This is manifest destiny. Where do I sign?

It wasn't crazy, either. The Pats badly need a complement to Wes Welker, and Lloyd -- with his established playmaking abilities and ties to offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels -- appears to be a snug fit.

Despite playing with two poor offenses last season, Brandon Lloyd still nearly eclipsed 1,000 yards receiving. (Kirby Lee/US Presswire)
But a report in Sunday's edition of The Boston Globe raises some character questions about Lloyd, who's on the verge of joining his sixth team in nine seasons.

"I know you've heard he was good in the building, but he wasn't necessarily an angel in the building," a Broncos source told the Globe. "He wasn't a good teammate. During games, he was asking the stat person to see how many catches and yards he had at that point in the game when (Kyle) Orton was starting."

(Uh oh. Teddy Bruschi is probably prepping his statement about the clear and present danger to The Patriot Way as we speak.)

"He's extremely intelligent," the source said of Lloyd. "Very articulate, very well-read, but there were times when people in the building thought he may be bipolar -- and not joking -- because he has days where he's up and ready to go and happy-go-lucky and he's like, 'Hey, what's up? How's it going?'

"And then there were other days when he was surly and moody, and you just know it's not a good day to approach him."

The Globe goes on to connect this description of Lloyd to Albert Haynesworth, which is just about the worst thing you can do to anybody.

"He's kind of a different cat, I'll say that."

The source said Lloyd has an "affinity" for McDaniels and believes the coordinator's presence "could be the equalizer that controls all the negative stuff."

But the chance of a clash remains.

"He wasn't shy about telling (former Broncos quarterback Kyle) Orton, 'Give me the damn ball,' or a look," the source said. "I don't think Tom Brady is going to put up with that. Tom Brady is going to be like, 'Just shut up. I pass it to the open guy. If you're open, I'll get it to you.' I don't know how he would react to that. Kyle never did that."

In a free-agent class loaded with quality wide receivers, you wonder how easily a team can be spooked by bad word of mouth. Food for thought at Patriot Lair.

Lloyd to Pats? Not so fast!

I'm honestly not for bringing this guy in. He has above average hands and good speed but not tall enough to out jump tall DB's. Now after reading this article, I am certain I do not want him. It will be interesting to see what happens though.
Thoughts?

sign the beast

He will get shut down by Revis, but should produce in other games. He's worth the investment

great.....another fricking poodle

how many times has he been instrumental in a victory?

losing follows this guy around

It's just a rehashing of Bedard's article.

Above average hands? He has excellent hands, a nice burst, gets good separation and runs precise routes, especially 10-20 yards off on sideline seam patterns. Watch some tape/film of him in STL or DEN. He's a very good player.

I like Colston more because he is a bigger target who extends better with similar qualities. If anything though Lloyd's hands are better. My reservation about Lloyd is attitude, but as someone else said, McDaniel knows him as well as anyone in the NFL.

Thanks for linking to the article, but please don't paste the full text of it into your post- just a snippet with a link works better. Having the full text here leads to Ian having to deal with legal threats/hassle, etc.

I don't agree with the hands assessment--he has great hands from everything that I've seen--but admittedly, my entire Lloyd stance is "McDaniels knows him better than anyone. If he wants him, I want him".

Colston is a product of the system he's in. He doesnt get great separation...I don't get why people want him so badly...Plus he's always nursing an injury...

If we get a Saint, go for Meachem, he gets separation and would stretch the field.....

Gee, a reciever with an attitude, thats rare in the NFL

As long as he knows his role here and to shut up he'll be fine, if he knows that going in and agrees then I think he'll be ok.

It comes down to the Pats deciding one thing...Is Loyd a dog-faker?

More on Lloyd from St. Louis Post Dispatch:

"...don't expect the Rams to make a huge push for Brandon Lloyd. Lloyd has been openly lobbying for a spot in New England. In addition, the view at Rams Park is that even though Lloyd has talent, he gets next to no yards after the catch."

Trading No. 2 pick gives Rams plenty of options

well, Mcdaniels didnt seem to have a problem with him considering he traded for him to get lloyd with the rams..

honestly though, I think this is good news at least for the Patriots hope....the fact that he has only excelled in Mcdaniels system, and rumors of attitude problems coming out, not to mention a Strong WR market should drive Lloyds price down.

and Belichick has never had a problem bringing on a player who may have abit of an "attitude" Corey Dillon, Randy Moss anyone???

Man, if Lloyd doesn't get a deal with the Pats, it's going to be a sad story for him. Well, not tragic, in the bigger world picture, but, in the context, sad.
