As of Sunday. Does not include any transactions over the weekend, like Sanchez restructure and extension, because the league doesn't process them until Monday. Does include rollover and adjustments and franchise tags according to Florio. Does not include RFA tender anticipated for Hoyer. No idea if it includes any restructure for Ocho since we have had no word on whether or not it was in fact completed.

Has the Patriots with $16.2M in cap space heading into FA. Less Hoyer's tag (#'s have not been released to public yet but tag numbers were close to guesstimates) that would be roughly $14.4M...

There are still teams over the cap. They have to be under by 4M on Tuesday.

Team-by-team cap space, as of March 11 | ProFootballTalk

This does not seem to be good news for us.

$16.2 under as of March 12
( 6.2) for rookies, Player 52, Player 53, Practice Squad, injury fund for replacements
-------
$10M net available for free agents (including Hoyer)

I would presume that no re-structures are included.

Only 12 teams ahead of us in the money they have available to spend, certainly not a bad situation to be in at the moment. Kudos to the front office for once again doing things right as it pertains to the salary cap.

Denver and cincy were both playoff teams last year and have that much cap space they could be very good this year if they spend right

Yeah, I'm not personally expecting any 'major' FA's, depending upon what your definition of 'major' is of course. Signing a few of our own and possibly making a solid play for a mid-level player is about what I am expecting.

Many here thought that the team was approx. under by about 25 million, so after taking the franchise tag into acct, it is pretty much where the experts here were projecting it.

If they could've had the Welker deal done in time, they may have had something around 20 million/early 20's to spend; sadly that could not be completed in time (or doesn't appear as though it will be completed in time).

Then again, if there's someone they really may want, I would imagine that they could do some quick work and free up another 5 million or so--without hurting the future too badly.

According to the report, the average cap situation is 14.6 under for each team, so at 16.2 we are slightly above the average.

Imagine if the PATS line up Lloyd at WR and he runs a post drawing one of the safeties and Brady hits Gronk with a quick slant in single coverage with a slow footed LB or overmatched safety? Or Welker single covered on a crossing pattern by a LB 2 steps behind him? Or Hernandez running all kinds of single coverage routes off the line, out of the backfield, split wide etc...IMAGINE that....

If Light retires they will free up another $3.5M in cap space (Bedard is tweeting $8M but not based on the contract as reported - $6M signing bonus protated and $3.5M in salary and workout money this season). An Ocho restructure could free up $1.5-2M and a release $3M. The draftees won't take up as much as mg projects because they will knock players out of the top 51, so maybe $3-4M.

They could knock another $5M off with simple restructures to Wilfork, Mankins and Gostowski. If they really need it they can knock $4M or so off of Brady, but that just puts his final 2 cap hits above $20M...

You can always manufacture cap room. There is just a price to pay for that eventually. And players and their agents know that, too.

Cincy are in a good position franchise wise and should try to capatalise.

They have a ton of cap, 2 1sts in the draft in the 20's. Have a good draft this year and they could be a real contender for a while.

They were at 25 mill, Welker took up over 9 mill so now its 16+. I still think they work out a deal with Wes and free up a couple mill more, and like you say, maybe another 5 mill here and there.
How is Arizona or Miami gonna fit Manning in? Denvers in the best shape out of all the rumored suitors.

It may not matter any more than it has in other instances where the offense can't score enough points to be competitive. They've really put Cassel on the hot seat with their Manning overture, and you have to think they're working in a windows mentality now, Scotts and RAC's. If Manning joins their division...

Stupid question but did the Pats apply their surplus cap from last year to this season?

Right. Miami could probably add Manning and some of his receivers, but not while also keeping all their other talent.

For the Cards it looks worse than that.

I tried to watch a sports wrap up tonight at 11 because there was nothing else on and NFLN if doing one of their endless 1 hr. SB and playoff game retrospectives... All that was on was Comcast's version of the three stooges with Felger as Mo, Buckley as Larry and DA as Shemp...talking about how awesome it woulda been if Manning went to the JETS or Miami... I turned it off. Nothing intelligent to see or here there.

Teams can still carry over unused cap from last year. The teams just had to notify the NFL in writing two weeks before 2012.

"“(v) Carrying Over Room. A Club may “carry over” Room from one League Year to the following League Year by submitting notice in writing signed by the owner to the NFL no later than fourteen (14) days prior to the start of the new League Year indicating the maximum amount of Room that the Club wishes to carry over. The NFL shall promptly provide a copy of any such notice to the NFLPA. The amount of Room carried over will be adjusted downward based on the final Room available after the year-end reconciliation.”"

I agree that we can "always" manufacture some cap room, perhaps as much as $15M. For example, I expect a Welker long-term contract before we increase the cap for rookies.

BTW, my $6.2M was not just for rookies. And yes, I do recognize that we are dealing with net numbers with any addition or subtraction. My $6.2M includes
A) the net cost of rookies
B) the cost of Player 52 and Player 53
C) the cost of the Practice Squad
D) an "insurance" amount to cover the cost of IR players and players brought in as replacements during the season

I suspect that $6.2M is not far off.

In any case, whether this number is $5M, $6M or $7M isn't as significant as many other factors, including the possible retirement of Light, the disposition of Ochocinco, a Welker contract and various potential restructures.
=========================

BOTTOM LINE

It is business as usual for Belichick. As usual, we we will enough to sign several "significant" free agents, including some of our own. And, yes, there will always be the UDFA's and JAG's that cost little if any net money. However, I see ZERO major signings (over $5M per year).

Cap space aside, I'm prepared for the Patriots to come out of free agency with both Mark Anderson and Andre Carter re-signed. I've sold myself on what Mario Williams can do for this team, but the piece doesn't seem to fit with how the Patriots do business.

Big money free agent? Sadly, not expected.

That's not the point Mo;

Denver seems the right place for Manning. They could even commit to bringing in Wayne.
