I haven't listened to the podcast and I don't know if I will.

I do think it is interesting that we hear a lot of current and former players wanting to know who "snitched" about the Saints Bounty program. Yet, none of the Ryan Clark's of the world care that Mangini was the snitch about cameragate.

Who do you think told Tanny? Part of the price Eric paid to land that gig was spilling the beans on it's arch enemy to underscore the value of hiring him. Tannenbaum was able to sell him to Woody based on if we do WE will have all the secrets to success. Tanny then perverted that into we will also have a secret that could bring Belichick down altogether. It was a little like the FO version of the bounty perversion of pay to play only the reward was a HC gig. Protoges often get hired based on their knowledge of how their mentor wins on the field. Mangini was also rewarded for information that provided a potential means to knocking his mentor out of the game. Eric didn't drop a dime on Bill to the league, just to a guy who would. Law of unintended consequences. He was never looking beyond proping up his own ego, same thing he did in Cleveland (when he threw his handpicked GM under the bus to save his own ass for another year proving he still hadn't learned the really important lesson that Bill tried to teach him while he was still here, that he wasn't overqualified to be a DC or ready to be a HC).

I listened to it last night and debated about starting a thread. I thought he was awful. Here is a paraphrased transcript.

Rat: When I was coaching in NY we brought in Favre and all those veterans. I thought we all had the same idea that we would go for it that year while also beginning a building process that would take a few years. We started off 8-3 then Favre got hurt and the team unraveled then I got fired. Totally unfair. Then when I went to Cleveland I got rid off all the malcontents and started to build the franchise. "People want you to cook the Turkey but they want you to cook it in the microwave." Then they fired me. Totally unfair.

Simmons: Do you think the Patriots should sign Mike Wallace?

Rat: It depends.

Simmons: I think he's really good. I'd love to see it.

Rat: He can be good but is he good for the system?

Me: Uhhh. thanks for the insight there....

Simmons: Does any one guy stick out from the Partiots SB team as a leader to you?

Rat: Harrison, Seymour, Vrabel, Brady, Otis Smith, McGinest and a few others.

It went around and around like that all night. He also said he doesn't like being in the press because of all the hypothetical situations people ask him about. Hey Rat, then you're in the wrong job.

Anytime a coach talks about stuff like this you have to read between the lines. I thought the Favre/Jets stuff was interesting, particularly when Mangini admitted that he basically went "all in" that year.

Rat: It depends. Does he fit your system? Plenty of QB's haven't worked out in the draft. If he doesn't work out that will be the last QB you draft.

Simmons: Does a QB need to have that aura, that magic?

Rat: Brady didn't have that when he came into the league. If you win you have an aura. So not really.


FWIW, I'm not trying to discredit the merits of this thread, just Mangini.

My interpretation of what he was saying was he was under the impression they weren't going all in. He thought they were still building something. Then the rug was pulled out from under him after Favre got hurt. I don't remember exactly what he said though b/c I was distracted by all the goals and fights while I was watching the Bruins game at the same time.

Just curious....What was Mangini supposed to do? He knows what the Pats are up to....He knows the Patriots gain advantage by taping...He knows the league stated teams MUST put an end to it. So what was Mangini supposed to do ....ignore it? i wouldn't have ignored it. The Pats were breaking the rules on his home field....hell no...I would have put a stop to it..just like he did

If the Jets weren't doing the same thing that same year, you probably still wouldn't have a point.

Eric's problem was, is and probably always will be he suffers from smartest guy in the room syndrome. Those guys never make mistakes, they simply get derailed by lesser intellects who don't appreciate their gift...

When he was here he and Bill could often be overheard fighting like teenage girls. Moments later they would be on the field coaching like nothing happened. That was because Bill always won the fight. He appreciated that Eric was schematically bright, that's why he kept him around and moved him up the ladder, he just also appreciated that he was impatient and abrasive and full of himself (inflated ego). He actually rubbed some of the cagy veterans here the wrong way for that reason. Supposedly when Bill told him that he wasn't ready to be a HC in the NFL just yet and that NY was the last place he should go even if he was, Eric's ego heard that as I'm scared that after all these years you will go to a competitor and beat my ass and everyone will know you were the Belichick to my Parcells...

In your dreams Eric. Eric is like the highly touted player who wears out his welcome with Bill because after his first pro bowl nod he can't listen to coaching, he makes the same mental mistakes over and over, not because he's stupid but because he thinks he knows better. The frosting on the cake is he was disloyal to boot, and that is something Bill will never entirely forgive or ever, ever forget. Nor should he.

Well, that last part just goes to show Mangini wouldn't know an aura if it bit him in the ass. Bet he did push for that draft bust he loves to spin as the pea counters blunder...

Eric is an x's and o's savant. He's not a great evaluator or student of human nature or motivator or even teacher. Lacks the patience and temperement to truly have the courage of his convictions, beyond the conviction that he knows it all and when he fails it's because others refused to acknowledge that.
