I look at Lloyd as a complimentary receiver (#2) and less of a deep threat.

This is a minimum three year investment, hopefully, Wallace would continue to play past Brady's retirement. I'm not sold on Lloyd still playing well in his mid-thirties (and being even less of a deep threat towards the end), sufficient to match Brady's window of three years and Wayne scares me (after Galloway, Ocho and slowed downed Branch). Wallace could sign a five year deal and still have 'Star' wheels when the contract ends.

If we want a real and legitimate deep threat we're going to have to pay for it.

Deep threats are overrated. Paying $10 million a year so Brady can throw down field one to three times a game is stupid. Teams just don't throw down the field that much even if you got a QB with a cannon for an arm.

What the Pats need is an outside receiver who can take pressure away from the middle where Welker, Gronk, and Hernandez reside. Both Wallace and Lloyd can fit that bill to varying degrees. Outside WRs is near crucial this offseason. A deep threat is an overrated luxury.

Deep threats are only a must have in Madden. Other than that, fans overrate them because when they connect they are always on the highlight reel.

I've don't play console games because I don't own a console. Just what I need, another distraction, :D.

It's not a luxury when facing a quality defense because it forces the FS to play differently (as you allude to) and gives Gronk/AHern the probability of facing only a LB on many deep seem routes. The opposing defense would be required to defend the entire field. Having the option of an effective deep pass, and forcing the defense to adjust accordingly is the point of having the threat. It's more important than actually throwing the ball to a deep threat BUT it has to be an actual threat. We've had this discussion before and often. Having a fast, deep going (sometimes) WR to compliment our inside game would be lethal, IMO. The deficiency usually shows up when we're injured or facing a quality defense.

Additionally, you can bet NE would use Wallace's speed in screen/bubble routes, making him more productive. Finally, having another 'Star' option on offense allows us the ability to have an injury to our three middle players (Gronk, AHern and Welker) and still survive a big game defense. I understand that that injury option needn't be a deep threat but I think the offense would be lethal if it is deep threat player (as opposed to a Lloyd*).

*Again, on Lloyd, how long will his wheels hold out?

A very good outside WR will do virtually everything you said a deep threat would do to opposing defenses, just more frequently. I am sorry, but give me a stud outside WR over a stud deep threat all the time. Randy Moss was a great outside WR when he was at his best here, not just a deep threat.

As much as you are concerned about Lloyd's tread on his tires, I am concerned that Wallace is not going to have the football intelligence to handle a complicated offense like the Pats run. The Steelers run a glorified school yard offense where Wallace runs simple routes and Roethlisberger just stays upright until he gets open. Can he read defenses and adjust to presnap reads? We know Lloyd can.

In my opinion the most intriguing RFA is not Mike Wallace.

It's Ravens CB Lardarius Webb.

I don't know if I would overpay for Wallace, since I think at 31 I would rather take Brian Quick (who I am reading the Pats grade as a first round value and I think is a great fit here,) sign Lloyd, Wayne or even garcon for 2-3 years at maybe 5-6 million, or if you want to spend a little extra maybe a play for Colston, but I have read that the price on Wallace to prevent a match as of now is 12 million, and while I like Wallace, I don't think he is worth 12 million.

Hell yeah. Sign him and move McCourty to FS.

I wonder why they didn't franchise him?

We might be the only team interested, with an available draft pick. Although, Green Bay may be a suitor as well. We'd have to front load, possibly a lot, or they would just match. Maybe that's why he wasn't franchised.

Wallace is good value at the 31st pick. Paying him should be doable since he has a limited number of teams that can afford to both pay him AND give up the pick. I think we go after him.

We'd still need a draft pick, somebody large and a decent deep threat (say: Tommy Streeter or similar) in the infamous third round.

The only way around going after Wallace would be to sign Garcon, a lesser player who would cost us a lot of money because many will be after him (UFA).

Couldn't have said it any better myself...i have warmed up to Garson.
