Three yards and cloud of smoke is officially on his way to oblivion. Fascinating career. His last memory of being a professional football player will be the AFC Championship game against the Patriots where he gained 22 yards on 6 carries.

Good luck down the road, Ricky.

Still had a pretty good career and was one of the top backs in the early 2000s. No one on this message board can even fathom the mental and physical strain the NFL can place on one person. Everyone will always criticize him for leaving in 2004 to find himself. You gotta understand both sides of the stories. Atleast he will be able to remember his name when hes 50.

Good for Ricky. Although the unenlightened about cannabis crowd still take their pot shots I'm sure Ricky doesn't sweat it. Very interesting humble person that this world could use more of.

When I think of Ricky Williams the first thing that comes to mind is Ditka's decision to mess up the Saints for years by sacrificing a good overall draft by piling his draft picks to trade for the 'guaranteed franchise RB' from Texas U.

Didn't work out so well back then.....

Having worked near UT during Williams career there, I can say he was a great player who never begged off despite injuries or wear and tear. that's how he set collegiate records.

He was also a different sort who had documented emotional problems he took medication for. The Miami Dolphins certainly could never accuse him of not putting out more than asked no matter how much of a physical toll it put on him. His last season before his hiatus, he went from 383 carries and a 4.8 average to 392 carries and 3.5 average. I'm sure meathead Wannstedt would have run him 500 times if he thought it might save his job.

Yeah, Ricky wasn't the type to complain or rebel, so he just took off.

Still a great player and a good person IMO, lots better than some of the malcontents who mail it in or play for the contract and then cruise.

I don't understand the negativity.

Do you have something personal against Ricky Williams?

Or are you just a terrible poster?

Ditka screwed him from the start because of all the draft picks he gave up. Ricky, suffering from social anxiety, then became the face of the franchise, the savior. He never had a chance.

I brought my dad to the Saints-Cowboys game as a Christmas gift Ricky's rookie year. (unrelated side note, it was Jake Delhomme's first career start) I remember on one play, two Dallas defenders were in the backfield so quickly, Delhomme barely got the handoff to Ricky before the play was blown up for a loss. Fans were booing and yelling "You suck Ricky!!"

A Super Bowl title and the most rushing yards ever might have been enough for the fans. Even then, I'm not so sure.

I don't know about that .....

I was a Las Vegas Outlaws fan from McMahon's XFL League and I never smoked dope during either of those seasons :snob:

This is the police. Step away from the Oreos and come out with your hands up.

LOL, was that intentional on your part?

well...I must say I'm positively SHOCKED to find that some Pats fans imbibe in the use of that highly dangerous, super addictive, mind altering, most evil drug in mankind's history (thanks to all the hard work by Rush Limbaugh for the preceding "facts")...I only have one very small question, Brady to Moss....

I'm surprised Williams' career track didn't lead the NFL to re-evaluate its stance on pot. That level of talent is so rare you'd think cooler heads would prevail.
