the raiders are likely to cut him anyway, so the pats should give 'em a 2013 7th rounder and get a starting OLB for 4.5M per year

Wasn't he with the Browns? I liked him in the Draft a few years back Big guy who can rush the passer, nice Hybrid type.

Can't trade in the NFL once the trading deadline passes until the start of the new league year.

So they would have to keep him to trade him, and that would trigger this, which his new team would be on the hook for:

Wimbley also has triggers in his deal that execute $19 million in future guarantees if he’s not released before the start of the league year. The Raiders value Wimbley and he is one of few pass rushing options they have, but the team also has lots of money tied up in its front seven and is in a cap crunch.

He is due salaries of $11M, 10M, 11.5M between 2013-2015 and $19M of that is guaranteed if he is not cut by the Raiders before March 17th. So if they held onto him to trade him the team that traded for him would be on the hook for $19M...

What a gift Al Davis gave Kamerion Wimbley before the Big one.

Yes, they traded him to the Raiders. I think the Browns got hosed IIRC. I'm too lazy to look it up.

Seems to me that Wimbley really struggled at OLB in the Browns defense a few years back.

I not sure how he fits in our defense.

Here's a good recap. Romeo chose him over Ngata, trading back to let Baltimore have Haloti in exchange for a 6th. Wimbley had a good rookie season and then dropped off. He rebounded somewhat with Mangenius, but then Eric/Holmgren decided to trade him to gain flexibility in case they could made some other trades... Sounds a little squirrley. The best offer they got for him was a 3rd. Then of course after that Al did his pattented big deal...

He fits our defense... would be a great addition if his contract was reasonable (5million or less)
Cleveland Browns

On July 22, 2006, he signed a six-year deal with the Browns and includes $9.3 million in guaranteed money and $23.7 million total. After being converted to outside linebacker from his college position of defensive end, he played the entire season as the starting linebacker playing opposite all-time post season sack leader Willie McGinest. During his rookie season, Wimbley made an immediate impact leading the team and all AFC rookies with 11 sacks, to go along with 62 tackles, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 forced fumble. He managed to fly under the radar in his rookie season despite the impressive performance, who was beaten out by 3 other rookie linebackers in consideration for the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

In his second NFL season, Wimbley failed to live up to the success of his rookie campaign, being part of a Browns defense that struggled throughout the season. However, he still led the team in sacks with 5, and also registered 51 tackles and 4 forced fumbles.

Oakland Raiders

On March 14, 2010, Wimbley was traded to the Oakland Raiders for a third round pick in 2010 NFL Draft, which was used on Quarterback Colt McCoy of Texas. The Raiders intended to put him at defensive end, hoping it would bring him back to his 2006 (rookie campaign) form. Instead they moved him to strongside linebacker. On August 21, 2010, during a pre-season game against the Chicago Bears, Wimbley recorded 4 sacks in one half on quarterback Jay Cutler. He finished the 2010 regular season with 58 tackles (46 solo), 9 sacks, a pass defended and a forced fumble. Wimbley started all 16 games in his first season with the Raiders.

He played in a 34 2 gap D while with the Browns. Aside from his rookie year, he wasn't good.

Reading is a lost art.

If he won't restructure for the Raiders he likely will still want something closer to the deal he has once he hits FA.

Let him get cut. He's overrated and overpaid.

It's funny how a lot of posters here don't want a certain guy when it's actually reasonable in cost/picks to acquire him at some point in the past (Bowe, Wimbley, D'Quell Jackson), then a few yrs later they suddenly want him when it's NOT reasonable and he's now making way more money than ever.
