Have to be optimistic, he was our starting CB at the beginning of last year.

I am not convinced his presence will be a difference in the secondary

If he's healthy, he should be a lot better than Molden or Edelman playing corner, which makes it easier for us to play McCourty at safety in certain packages. You can argue he won't turn the secondary from bad to great, but to say he won't make a difference seems a bit silly.

A healthy (and I'm not assuming that, it's going to be a question until he stays healthy for a while) Dowling is a huge big deal. Dowling and McCourtey outside, Arrington in the slot and Chung at one Safety leaves a second starting Safety the only need other than depth.

Watch how we are going to here that he tripped over a grasshopper and will miss the rest of the year. This is one update i didn't want to hear about Glass-I Dowling.

Not only that but he was lined up over Marshall for the most parts. Marshall is the type of receiver who usually gets his way with most DB's with his power and speed, but he couldn't get his way with Dowling.

Dowling staying healthy will be the big trick here......

If he can perform at a decent level, not even a high level, it will be an upgrade at the position. Also need McCourty to have gotten out of his sophomore slump. Grab a S in FA or the draft and the defense should be alot better.:rocker:

Can someone please post information about Ras-I Dowling's actual injury history in college. I keep hearing, and reading on this forum, how he's "been injured since high school." I have a very difficult time believing that BB would use the first pick in the second round in last year's draft on a guy that has been injured so often, but if it's true it won't be the first time I've been very surprised at a BB draft move. Sorry I haven't done this for myself at this point, but if someone out there has some facts, I'm interested to see them (as I imagine are others on this forum). Thanks in advance.

season-by-season breakdown:

Ras-I Dowling, Virginia, NFL Draft - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

He was hurt his senior year in college, and not much before that

played 12 of 13 games as a freshman,
11 of 12 games as a sophomore,
12 of 12 games as a junior (I think- the article doesn't say),
and
5 of 12 games as a senior

This link confirms that he played in 35 of 37 games during his first 3 years in college, and the first game missed as a freshman was not due to injury, just sat, being a freshman.

Ras-I Dowling Biography - University of Virginia Cavaliers Official Athletic Site - VirginiaSports.com

Bedard's column describes the issues:

Analysis of 2nd round pick, CB Ras-I Dowling - Extra Points - Boston.com

everything wrong as a senior
healthy as a junior
hamstring and back issue as a sophomore, though he only missed one game
healthy as a freshman

Bedard claims he had a broken hand and a knee injury in high school. Google searches reveal he missed 5 games with the hand as a junior. Don't see anything on the knee injury was, but is corroborated here:

So, he was injured once as a senior and once his rookie year and now hes made of glass? I thought this was a great pick, we'll see this year if it was.

It only takes one injury to linger for the rest of your life.

That said, I'm rooting for the guy. We'll need him to step up next year or else it's going to be another long season for the pass defense.

Would be nice to see him on the field.
THe nickname Ras IR Dowling is starting to stick.

In fairness to McCourty he played second half of the season with a duff shoulder.

I'm glad to hear that they went in and cleaned out his hip...those things can be tricky. I'm actually surprised surgery wasn't first option, since recurring hip injuries rarely heal on their own. But assuming they cleaned it out like they were supposed to, i can't wait to see what this guy can do when healthy. 6'1" 200 at CB who started as a rookie before injury? I've got a mental erection! :singing:

I sure hope he stays healthy because I think if he can stay healthy, the sky's the limit for him.

From the few glimpses we had it looked like he is a player.

Hoping we get some goddamn consistency in the secondary this year.

The college injury was exactly why he was available where the Pats picked him, anyways.

6'1, 200 pound, physical cornerbacks with speed and acceleration don't typically fall to the second round. You pretty much get them due to health, character concerns, or rawness. Of the three, I think Belichick's made it pretty clearly that he thinks health concerns are the best risk to take (Wheatley, Gronk, Dowling, Tate, Cannon).

In general, I wish people here would take a more complete view of the philosophies that they're criticizing. I've seen a lot of people rip on the Tate, Wheatley, and Dowling picks, in particular, on the premise that it's foolish to spend high picks on guys with college injury histories. I wonder if these people realize that what they're saying is that the Pats should not have picked Gronkowski. Imagine if he'd suffered another back injury at any point in the past two years? Belichick (and this board) never would have heard the end of it.

Personally, I think I agree with Belichick's view on players come off of one major injury (guys like Gronk, Tate, Wheatley, Dowling). Basically, you have a bunch of GMs out there who are terrified of looking stupid, and probably the easiest way to look dumb is to pick a player who already has the injury that will derail his career. Skittish decisionmakers devalue these players more than they should, especially in the modern era where sports medicine has made it possible to get more players back to 100% than you could in the past. It's high-risk, high-reward, but harping on individual picks makes no sense. You either like the philosophy or you don't, and I do like it. I'm not going to criticize drafting Dowling, because it would be inconsistent of me to do that while loving the Gronk pick.
