Chung -"He is good enough to lose you games"

Bill Walsh once said of a player: “He’s good enough to lose you games.”

Patrick Chung appears to fit in this category. He is good enough to bring in solid play at safety. Yet, he has had pivotal contribution towards ending our season the last two years. Last year, he muffed a well designed fake punt against the Jets. That play contributed heavily towards our loss to Jets in the playoffs. This year in the SB, Belichick calls a perfect defense against the Giants - make them go Manningham! However, Chung gets faked out by Manning and ends up reaching Manningham late. Two plays later, Giants are in field goal range and ready for the win.
Does anybody think that these are learning pains Patrick Chung will have to go through before he becomes an elite safety? Rodney Harrison gave us about 3 years of great safety play before injuries began to diminish his effectiveness. We do need such performance from the safety position in next four years (assuming Brady lasts that long) to bring home one or two Super Bowls.

He's the least of my worries at the safety position right now. There are quite a few teams wishing that they had even one safety as good as him.

He should have been there before the ball, although Manning said he saw him step the wrong way and thats why he threw the ball where he did. If Chung doesnt fall the fake maybe Manning doesnt even throw the ball, hard to say at this point but it was definately a mistake by Chung.

Chung is a good safety. He isn't a great safety but he's young and has a high ceiling. I see him being here for a while.

Because of out lack of a secondary, we had to play Chung deep and coverage is not his best asset. Chung is great if he has a coverage safety and some cornerbacks so he can attack.

Rodney Harrison would have been wasted playing deep because the team was scared of the long ball, too.

Coughlin did a good job adjusting to isolate Vince, exposing our less than intimidating other linemen and taking advantage of our lack of coverage talent in the secondary.

Putting people in position to utilize their talents is more important than some mythical elite, we've known all along that coverage wasn't Chung's strong suit, yet we had to keep him from exploiting his strong points.

He is viewed by many Patriot fans to be a better player than he actually is. Right now, he is the best of a bad bunch and has a lot of room for improvement

Actually, there was an article recently (or maybe it was in The War Room) that said that the Fake Punt wasn't the play called in. So, I'm not sure how you can say that Chung muffed it..

Also, how do you know that Chung got faked out by Manning? Do you know that he was supposed to help over the top on Manningham? Or maybe, he was supposed to be helping over the top on Cruz and that meant he wasn't in a position to help out on Manningham to begin with.

Except that Manning is talking out his ass. He doesn't know that Chung stepped the wrong way. The coverage on that play was for Chung to be over the top on Cruz or Hicks. Not Manningham. And Manning was making that throw regardless. It was a perfect pass and Chung couldn't have done anything about it even if he was in over the top coverage.

If it's about how Chung isn't elite in coverage... sure. That's a known fact. He never has been and never will be. That's not what he brings to the table, though.

There was something he could do about the Manningham catch, but Patrick Chung can consciously and instantaneously realize forking decision paths in a "many worlds" interpretation of quantum theory, and chose this world as the one he did not make the play in, because in this world, he knew that this thread would appear.

The call was what was muffed. IIRC, Chung called the wrong play so that he was not expecting the ball to come to him. That's why he dropped the ball after the snap.
