I'm gonna throw a senario out there with our "Slot Machine' Wes Welker.
Everyone here basically put WW in senarios with available R/URFA receivers lined up here with him.

Lets say (HOPE IT NEVER HAPPENS) Welker opts to take a BIG pay day else where leaving us. What receiver/receivers would you want to plug in hole filled by his departure? Who do you think would be franchised & WW money freed up from his Tag or FA 9mil or so?

That's not "paying out." That's the slot machine breaking down.

it's not his choice if they franchise him, but I'd assume you'd see edelman take his place.

He deserves 8-9 million per. He came back early in 2010 after tearing his knee up in Houston. Could argue that he endangered his future contract to help the team. Hope he's rewarded for his performance and hard work he's given us.

Can Edelman really handle that? Besides the occasional flash, I just don't see him ever approaching Welker-ness. Not saying I don't want him on the team, of course.

Taylor Price, Chad Jackson, or Brandon Tate can replace Welker :D

The only question I have about Welker is whether they'll sign him before they need to franchise him so that they can keep more cap flexibility.

Deus my thoughts exactly. Hopefully WW $igning to stay is a win-win for both.

I think Edelman could be serviceable. Remember, Wes Welker wasnt Wes Welker until he became Wes Welker. you know what i mean?

Umm, no.

Welker was Welker until he became Wes F***ing Welker in 2007.

Without Welker last year this team does not even get to the Super Bowl

To some,Wes will forever be known in 2011 season as the reason why the super bowl was lost and that's not fair.

It's funny how one drop..albeit a big one, makes people forget 1,500 yards and second in the league to Megatron.

This team cannot afford to let Wes go elsewhere

Edelman couldn't carry Wes's jock....sorry,but thinking Edelman is an adequate replacement is delusional.

Of course he couldn't. But it's Welker vs. Edelman + $9M of FA. I love Welker and I expect him to be back but it's not a no-brainer, there's a ton of excellent FA out there this year.

The guy produced 122 catches this year.... if we sign a FA outside guy then the guy will be in base replace Deion . You are asking some one to learn the system and put some crazy numbers.

inside hernandaz and edelman have to step to take the extra slack. We all know edelman or hernandaz seem to get dinged up easy.

right now if we returns , the opposing teams best CB will move inside as the steelers , jets and every other team play us . then they double gronk. now you are asking your outside guys to beat the other teams 3rd or 4th CB. let wes go then teams will put there best corner outside ... again this FA need to beat that matchup.

Hernandaz had huge games when teams had to cover wes and gronk. if we put a even a rookie who can fly outside like torey smith take 3 picks after shane vareen in the 3rd it will have the effect we need.

No, it's Welker v. Edelman + $9M of FA + a p***ed off Brady.

Wes at $8 - $9 mil is to expensive. Wes at $6 - $7 mil allows the Pats to go after a few other FA's.

If Wes leaves it's not the end of the Pats. Gronk, Branch, & Hernandez can all do damage on the inside. We would then be able to target a top outside receiver.

By no means do I want to see Wes go, but I also don't want to see the team over pay him and not leave themselves enough $ to get another FA WR.

Wes is a good guy. A proper team player. I expect him to take a fair deal. 7 or 8 per year shouldn't be an issue for either side.
