..... and thus it begins....

Well, here’s the first big surprising move of the offseason.

Oakland released cornerback Stanford Routt on Thursday, less than a year after the team gave him a “five-year, $54.5 million” contract. (It was originally a three-year, $31.5 million deal, then the team restructured the deal.)

Obligatory "do the Patriots sign him?" post.

Depending whether we keep McCourtey at CB or Safety he would be a good signing, he's a cap casualty not a crappy player.

Dowling, Routt as starting CB, Arrington in the slot, Moore as a backup with McCourtey and Chung at S would be a huge improvement from the SB lineup.

Greetings,
Let's sign the beast.

Penalty machine.

He is grabby, but he's only been coached at Oakland. I think his technique can improve with coaching.

He's very reliable in man-coverage. A good tackler and physical in run support. He's only 28 years old with good size.

It wouldn't be a bad signing in my opinion for the right price.

I'd probably prefer to take a look at his now former teammate, Tyvon Branch. Then again, I'm not looking at McCourty as a safety.

Better options out there, for me.

Terrell Thomas, Brent Grimes, Brandon Carr, Tracy Porter top the list, IMO.

He's definitely not the type of player I see the Pats jumping on early.

The Bengals and Bucs have needs at CB, and both don't mind overspending. I could see one of them giving him 22 million over four years.

Which is absolutely not what the Patriots should do.

I like Brent Grimes but I doubt Atlanta lets him walk.

Agree on Grimes and Carr, but I might take Routt over Thomas (injury concern) and Porter (inconsistent play).

I like Routt for the right price. Routt has good ball skills and doesn't get beat deep. As another poster mentioned, he does need some discipline, but with the right coaching, I think he would be a great fit here across from Arrington.

I don't care who, just get some competent members of the secondary on this team.

Its all about the price, if hes not greedy hes worth a look... he'd be our best corner

They let Asomugha go, sign an above average CB to Revis money, then cut him for a big cap hit, and cut Moore from their practice squad.

The Raiders are still nuts without Al (this, Carson Palmer, Pryor, etc) and will have a horrid secondary in 2012.

That said, id only be interested if routt was cheap, some team will overpay.

I know BB has been wanting to play more man coverage...that's pretty much what Routt's been doing for the last few years.

He didn't deserve that contract, but I'd take a look at this guy.

If he can clean up the penalties, sign him to a 2 year/$4-6 million deal.
