Being too hard on the Patriots - ESPN

Rick Reilly said:
"You blew this Super Bowl," Boston Globe sports writer Eric Wilbur wrote of Brady on Monday. "You denied your coach No. 4. You let down your teammates."

This is the same Brady who broke a Super Bowl record with 16 straight completions during the game. The same Brady who's taken the Pats to five of these big games. The one who was on the cusp of tying Joe Montana with four Super Bowl wins.

And you wonder why Brady lives in L.A.

"Epic fail," Kerry J. Byrne wrote of Belichick on ColdHardFootballFacts.com. "Epic failures from one end of the organization to the other."

This is the same Belichick Byrne had previously praised for directing a team that had given fans "a stunning string of colossal victories, big moments, all-time records and memorable games for the ages."

(snip)

A little decaf, folks: The Patriots lost the Super Bowl on the last play of the game when a tipped ball failed to stay in the air another quarter second longer so a one-legged Rob Gronkowski could possibly catch it. If it had, all three of these writers would be hailing Brady, Belichick and Welker as just slightly greater than Lincoln.

How fickle are you people?

What an absolutely spot-on article. Great find and thanks for linking it.

that is a very true article

Line up this board's haters. Here we go! Samples: That's loser talk! What a pu^$$*! If it's just a game, why do they keep score? If you ain't got the ring, it don't mean a thing! Easy for him to say, he doesn't live here! Wimp!!! He's wicked wrong! I could go on and on, but it's late.

LOL......now here's the fan's 'patriot way'!!!!

That's a good article, as most of Reilly's are. The man's a great story teller. I would aspire to be as successful.

I really agree with him too. Haters love to hate, and it seems to be an especially provincial trait. The NE/NY/Philly corridor is full of it.

It was a terrific column, nice perspective.

The one thing I didn't like is that it was spun as a message to fans (the link on the ESPN/NFL front said "Sore losers") but clearly the column was at least as much targeted toward media types. Some of them, like Wilbur, were just childish.

(In fairness to media in general: I've seen a lot of post-game analysis that has been very respectful of the Patriots both in how they played the game and how they continue to win. I guess there's a lesson there on how anyone can cherry pick a few posts or stories here or there to paint a group in a bad light, whether it's media on fans or fans on media.)

I havent seen many national media give pats much credit for their program. Some local ones maybe.

Here is a sample....he is taking quotes from Eric Freakin Wilbur. I think we can all agree Wilbur's article was trash and not representative of the thoughts of most Pats fans. he also quotes three random twitter accounts...how is that relevant?

I agree there are a lot of haters, but most of those people are the bandwagon types that say stupid thing like "Brady is too rich and doesn't care about football anymore..he just wants to live in California with his supermodel wife"

BTW, in regard to Wilbur - - he works for the Globe/Boston.com

They are in the Red Sox' pockets - - have always been.

Just look up Sports Editor Joe Sullivan's track record with regard to the Patriots.

Shaughnessy, Ryan, McDonough, etc. all down the line. It's a full blown campaign that's been waged for business reasons for almost two decades. They see the Patriots as a threat to the red Sox business interests. How many more annual columns from Shank do we need to laugh at how "no matter what, this is still a RED SOX TOWN!!!"

Hell, they didn't get rid of Borges until they were forced to by legal threat of supporting plagiarism.

On the day after the Super Bowl, there were 3 separate articles on Boston.com touting the release of Curt Schilling's video game.

It's a deep seated sports/cultural issue with them.

I agree with the article but in general I find the media's role in this hypocritical. Article after article feeds the flames like Easterbrook with his Good vs Evil Patriots articles or their constant attempts to promote trash talk (Did they really need to ask Jacob's what he though about Giselle's comments?). Then when fans do react the media from up on high, shakes their heads in disapproving judgement. Shame on you for scapegoating players. Shame on you for giving Steve DeOssie a hard time. Shame on you fans for taking this all so personally. And while I agree with many of those sentiments, shame on the media for being the driving force behind most the hate and vitriol to begin with.

Wow! That is an interesting take! I don't live in Boston, but it does make sense. I have heard guys like Shaughnessy, Ryan, and Barnacle mention on the local New York shows that the Pats can't hold a candle to the Pats in popularity which always surprised me.

I always knew Boston was a Red Sox town, but thought the Pats seriously narrowed the gap between the 2 in popularity.
