Back in the 2010 draft, the Pats could have drafted WR Dez Bryant and DE Carlos Dunlop. Two years later, we are basically saying those are 2 areas of weakness, no #1 stud receiver and no pass rushing threat. Of course Belichick blew that chance by picking that pass rushing stud Jermaine (Crable) Cunningham instead of Carlos Dunlop. The 2010 draft could have been legendary if the Pats could have walked away with Bryant, Dunlop, Gronkowski and Hernandez.

Would it have been enough to put the Pats over the edge and win it all. I know there will ever be a way to tell if it would have worked out well, but both players are on the verge of greatness. Now with two number 1 picks and two number 2 picks, we can only hope BB can rectify his errors of drafting past, but I doubt we actually pick players with those picks.

In the last month alone, Dez started a bar fight, and a report came out that he doesn't know how to run routes. Not exactly great things to be known for.

Dunlap was bit in the rear end by regression to the mean this season. His sack to pressure percentage was absurdly high, and it fell a lot this season, as expected. Are we really complaining because the Pats didn't pick a guy who ended up with 4.5 sacks this season?

Selecting Mike Wallace instead of Brandon Tate in 2009 might have given you a better hypothetical.

In all fairness, that is 4.5 more sacks then Cunningham has for his career.

Don't think this is a fair question, as there are too many variables. But, the Pats certainly stink at evaluating WR talent, and I do believe we are Super Bowl champions if we have even decent evaluators.

Trade up to grab Chad Jackson, GB trades down and gets Greg Jennings. Fail.

Bring on Joey Galloway. Fail.

Bring on Chad Ochocinco for $6M. Fail.

Draft Taylor Price and Brandon Tate. Fail.

Sad thing is that with Tate, Price, Ocho, and Galloway, all we needed was a 2/3 receiver, a guy who is just decent and can tally up 600 yards per season. These guys were just horrendous decisions. Deion Branch was a decent addition, but he appears to be done.

Greg Jennings instead of Chad Jackson too.

Hypothetically speaking, I beleive the Patriosts would have won if Gronkowski was healthy. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it! LOL!

I agree with this. I believe he makes the play on the Blackburn INT, and would have been the main jumper on the hail mary instead of the shorter Hernanadez. Gronk was behind the play trying to grab deflections, I don't even think he was looking at the ball in the endzone during it's flight. Also, he probably would have had 8 catches instead of 2.

Despite the height difference, I think Hernandez can get up to almost the exact same height; he had ridiculous hops on that deflection in the Cleveland loss.

*sigh*...hypothetically, realistically, and undoubtedly....NO.

If you think Chad struggled with learning this offense...:bricks:

There is no telling whether he would have gotten the offense. Maybe he get's "Price'd" and doesn't do much his rookie season, but even Price seemed to have figured out the offense by his second season (looked great in a preseason game). I still don't understand why he was let go.

That being said, seems like Underwood figured out the offense pretty quicky. None of these guys are brain surgeons, but some seem to figure it out quickly (Moss, Gronk & Hernandez), and some seem to never figure it out (Chad Jackson, Galloway, Ocho, etc). There is no understanding why some get it and some don't. I wouldn't assume the intelligence level of these guys varies too much.

In college coaches had to line Dez up in simple formations. People talk to him to no end and he just reverts to form, on and off the field. He's got athletic talent, but like Bill says talent is only as good as it's ability to get and stay on the field. He'll probably be out of the league in a couple of years because of his persistent inability to be in the right place at the right time, on or off the field.

I was going to save this for another thread, but...

The Patriots play 2 TE sets at least 80% of the time. Over 19 games, thats over 1,000 snaps. There are no plays off for these guys. On pass plays, they're primary options and on running plays, they're crashing into a DE or LB. Yet they have 2 TEs on the entire 53-man roster. Think about it--they play 1 RB or empty most of the time, yet they have 5 on the roster. How reasonable is it to expect that these two guys will be upright and healthy at the end of the year? Last year, it was Aaron's knee, this year it was Gronk's ankle. Next year it will be something else. The suprising thing is not that they weren't healthy at the end of the year, it's that they both played as many games as they did. This is an offense that is largely based on a very unstable foundation.

Hypothetically speaking the Patriots win the SB if Welker catches the ball.
We could think of 1,000,000 ways the could have been better than 1 play short of good enough to win the SB, but is it really worth the time?

So teams shouldn't play good players because they might get hurt?

Maybe we should get an additional TE (Coby Flenner) and run the ball more.

No, but it's a legit criticism to note that a team so dependent on the 2 TE set has to have more than 2 on the roster. It's one I made before the season. I know they had extra OL who could block and even one with some TE experience, but then injuries to the OL made that option dicey. They need to add another TE to the roster one way or the other this offseason. Probably primarily a blocking TE but ideally one who can also handle receiving duties to a reasonable degree. Bolstering the WR corps would allow them to cover for Hernandez in a pinch, which they asked Ocho to to no avail earlier in the season.

But the OP is clueless if he thinks spending a #1 on a kid like Dez is the kind of risk reward move this organization should or would have made. Dallas will struggle with him til the day Jerry throws the towel in. He and Al are/were skill position talent junkies. In this day and age when so much is handed to that kind of talent it's increasingly difficult to manage and coach it and get that bang you anticipated for your bucks.

Bingo. Until we have areal running game and it is part of the game plan this team will be SB losers.

We ran the ball in 2001, 2003 and 2004. Now it is just let Brady throw it. Its is not going to be any different with McDaniels.
