Rumor Alabama Safety Mark Barron had an injury

Double hernia surgery. Could be out until june or july. Saw it on nfldraftcountdown. Not sure I should link here. I posted this as a separate thread because many people speculate him to the Pats. Many(self-included) thought he'd be picked before 27. I would doubt that if rumor is true. Two gap de at 27. Barron at 31??

I'm curious, as I like Barron from watching a lot of Alabama games -- what are the minor character concerns?

Also, what skills is he missing that would prevent him from becoming a free safety (v strong safety)?

None. Will be a top 10 safety within two years.

We DON'T need a free safety! The Pats play left and right safeties not free and strong. Barron is good against the run and the pass. He'd be awesome here.

One for lying to police to cover for a cousin, the second (I believe but I'm not totally positive [he got busted again, I'm just not positive why]) for public intoxication or an open container or something like that. Nothing earth shattering. But not as clean as we usually like them.

As for skills: He's an excellent in the box SS. For like run support and jarring the ball loose from TEs and RBs who catch short passes. Which we already have in Chung. But he's a step or two slower and doesn't have as good of coverage skills than I would like in a FS who usually plays "centerfield".

I was under the impression that he's actually good in pass coverage for a safety as well, though I don't pay as close attention as many people do to prospects' abilities and fit.

This will be ignoring his ability to read the pass and make a play on it, his ability to understand how a play is developing and some awesome interceptions. As a cover safety, he may be a little limited. As a centerfielder, he'd be way better than anything else on the Patriots roster.

"Better than anything else on the Patriots' roster" isn't worth a first round pick. For a safety to be worth a first rounder, he better have high upside too. You can get reliable but slow anywhere in the draft. You don't waste a first rounder on it. Barron would be absolutely destroyed by any number of WRs if you trusted him back in a centerfielder role.

Upgrading our defense isn't worth a first round pick? Interesting viewpoint. Isn't Patrick Chung, a second rounder on the Patriots roster? Better than Chung means almost by default at least a 1st-2nd round grade.

Barron has football smarts, has improved significantly, plays at the position of arguably the Patriots biggest need, would by virtue of the fact that he's an upgrade over Ihedigbo, improve the weakest aspect of the Patriots defense, would most likely be a beast on special teams, plays in a Patriot like defense already, coached by part of the BB coaching tree and just happens to be an integral part of a dominant college defense. And yet he's not worth a first rounder? Sorry, can't agree.

Kind of tough to be destroyed by a top college receiver when you have the two top rated CB's in the draft along with two 1st rd LB's patrolling the infield. That defense is a machine. What the Pats got to figure out is if Barron was one of the key cogs that made it go.

I think he was crucial to that defense. He gave it toughness and altered opponents passing routes by laying the wood to receivers over the middle. He improved a lot as a tackler and has decent instincts for the position.

I would take him at 31. I'd like to get a two gap de first. Even trade if that's what it takes. Then Barron. Then an olb at 48. The top 3 olb/de's are supposed to be Mercilus, Perry and Ingram. But, there are a few guys who might be just as good whom we can get at 48 like; Vinny Curry, Andre Branch, Chandler Jones and Cam Johnson.

I agree, i dont think there are any Von Millers in this class.

Mercilus is your Aldon Smith, how high will someone take him is the question.

Upshaw is the most well rounded 3-4OLB in this class hands down, but people might plug Ingram in there first because of his upside.

Perry, I dont really get the hype of... i dont think he'll make the transition to stand up as easily as others have in the past; and overall i just dont get a good feeling about.

Branch>Jones>Curry>Johnson for the second tier... which isnt that far behind #1 if you ask me
