The NE Patriots came within a Wes Weckler whisker of winning the Super Bowl with the 2nd oldest defense in the NFL and the 6th oldest offense in 2011.

Interesting to see Green Bay and San Francisco among the top three or four youngest teams on both sides of the ball in the NFL. The Pats need to work closer to that to make the transition for future excellence.

Fortunately, youth is on the way. The Patriots have 4 of the top 64 picks in the draft with a friendly rookie salary cap to make keeping these picks the most valuable ever, as selections or as trade bait.

Does Trader Bill use all his picks? If he does, what should he do? Or should he shop these picks around for next Randy Moss, Cory Dillon, or Wes Weckler?

The good news is that the Patriots are starting with a talent-laden roster with several positions partway or completely through a youth movement . Both lines have good young players to go with veterans near or at the end of the trail.

Where is the part about the cornerback drafted in the 2nd round and wide receiver drafted in the third round, both coming off significant injuries, who get cut in two years?

I agree. The Patriots have some personnel issues, as all teams do, but age really isn't one of them.

Look at the date of the blog entry. At that point, the Pats had Leigh Bodden (30), Brandon Meriweather (he is only 28, but older than his replacements), and Albert Haynesworth (30).

I think they are all gone, except for maybe Waters who seemed ageless this year. But let's say they all leave - that's one staring DL and one backup, two starting OL, one inconsequential WR and one inconsequential RB (in '11). Anderson and Carter make two more starting DL. DL is the biggest need on the '12-'13 team unless both Carter and Anderson return.

You may be correct, but with the new CBA, the value of these low 1st rounders looks more like a fit for the cap than ever before. Long-term deals (4 years) at $1.5 - 1.75 million per year.

The last five guys got right around $7 million over 4 years and included RB Mark Ingram and some top-shelf linemen on both sides of the ball.

Belichick and the Krafts focus on value over everything else. The new CBA is a dream from the middle to end of the first round - quality, youth and affordable long-term deals. I think he uses both selections in the 1st round.

I wouldn't bet on it. We still don't know how he will approach the draft with the new CBA. Now that there is far less financial risk to first rounders, he may even try to move up. This will be the first draft with the new CBA (the last draft everyone knew there would be some kind of reduced rookie wage scale, but no one knew for sure what it would be).
