Did Gronkowski have a shot at the ball on the last play?

Gronk was around the ball on the Hail Mary pass but I did not see if he had a shot. If there was justice in this world then Gronk would have made that catch. A friend of mine suggested that if he had a good ankle he would have made that catch (or cources if he did then the Patriots would not have been down). Oh that would have been such a sweet revenge for the previous Super Bowl....

At the time it looked like he did but I need to watch it again to see if that is accurate.

He def lunged toward it as it fell to the ground. It looked like he was three or four feet from it.

No way after watching the replay.

about 2 feet away...so close

nah, if the ball was tipped up he would have 100% caught it with his positioning and height advantage but it was knocked down and came into his hands after it bounced

both welker and gronk slowed down when the ball was in the air, if they kept running just a little bit more they could have caught it off the tip.

here's a good replay shot, at 5:00 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64ewRXpMHKQ

welker was in even better position than gronk to catch it, since it was to his side, godamnit if he didn't stop for that 1 second we win

Not really, had he been on the other side, probably.

If he had been more aware of what was going on, then yeah. He was kinda late.

dont get worked up over it. the superbowl is over and the giants won, nothing can change that now.

If it was tipped outward instead of straight down he might of had a shot. In fact there was another Patriot ready to catch the tip right next to him if it veered off.

No. Just for the sake of the discussion,if the play went down exactly the same until the contact with the ball, and he was in the same place, but his ankle were fine, still virtually no chance he gets to it. Nothing is 0% or 100% in this world, but I'd put it pretty close to 0%.

(But, yeah, that would have been quite an ending :) I'm pretty sure I would have run the 100 yards to the ocean and just run straight in screaming my head off in joy.)

I know, I thought he was to far behind the crowd for a shot.
bad positioning on his part, he hesitated as the ball was coming down and he could have been right behind the crowd of DB's and Hernandez, and come down with it when it was tipped down.

i hate what ifs :(

He didn't have a shot, but only because of the weird trajectory the ball took. He played it perfectly, and was watching the ball the whole time.

The defender who hit the ball actually hit it in a way that it should have probably hit Gronk right on the #'s, without him diving or anything. If it was a round ball, it would have; but it just took a weird angle....

Welker had an even better shot, if he didnt stop running he would had been in perfect position to catch it.
Also if Hernandez had managed to push the ball back into the air, both Welker and Gronkowski were in a pretty good position to catch it.

He was where he was supposed to be, the ball supposed to be tipped up a little more, it pretty much went straight down.

From where he stood, he had about the same chance of making that play as Ocho had of making the probowl this year. I think both he and Branch should have gotten in tighter since you know they are gonna knock it down not up. Those are the breaks:(

I heard a lot of people talking about this today and it blows my mind. I've watched it a few times and he had absolutely no chance. Bum ankle or not, he was not catching that ball. It wasn't even close!
