Outside of Moss and Welker hits, BB does not know how to develop a WR or judge the talent/fit..... There's plenty of data there now since last time we actually developed a WR was back in 2002 or so with Givens, Branch. Name me 1 other WR he was able to scout well or develop in this system ?

Does the name Doug Gabriel ring a bell ? How's that for starters....

Jabar Gaffney.

Offense

Wide Receiver: Re-sign Wes Welker, sign unrestricted free agent Brandon Lloyd
Running Back: Re-sign Ben Jarvis Green-Ellis
Center: 2012 NFL Draft (third round)
Center: Re-sign Dan Connolly to cap friendly deal

Defense

3-4 Outside Linebacker (trade up and select Courtney Upshaw if available at 19th overall)

Draft Countdown - Trade Value Chart

3-4 Defensive End (first round)
Free Safety (second round)
Nickel Cornerback (fourth round)

Welker will be 32 at the start of the season. And with his "mileage" of so many catches and hits, there's no way we Franchise him. Wouldnot surprise me if BB chooses to let him walk

Would be stupid to do since effectively between Welker, Branch, AH, Gronk, you have 4 slot receiver players.

Lloyd is NOT coming to New England.

************! What's this stupid obsession? LOL.... We weren't even willing to cough up a 5th rounder for Lloyd this year. We could've easily have had him if we wanted to, but Belichick passed on him.

that may be true, but they didn't have mcdaniels lobbying for him, either.
maybe bob/bill didn't have a particular interest and they were moving on with ocho, who didn't pan out all that well.
now they have more of a need, a lobbyist, and they don't have to give up any picks.

I'm not predicting anything, but I wouldn't call it crazy.

Ok, so we got two first round picks. We need to trade up, so we can get top 10 talent.

Welker stays as the number one slot receiver (from the wide receiver ranks) and Branch goes. Brandon Lloyd will become New England Patriots offense number one wide receiver in 2012.

I'd disagree with that.

I don't watch college ball, and I have no idea who the pats like, etc, but you can strip down your draft pretty quick to get into the top 10 and it's no guarantee you'll get a hit.
we have plenty of spots that could use some young talent, and I'd rather spread the wealth, letting a few guys hit and a few bust, rather than put all the eggs inone basket which leaves holes even if you get lucky and hit.

the reason we're even in this position of having the picks to trade up and down is because of his trading downinto the future, so i'd continue with that approach, trading at least one into next year, and taking who's there at your spot, or dropping back a bit if you think you can get him later.

you'd really have to pony up a lot to move top 10, and we can always sign in fa.

like I said, I don't follow college ball, but who are the top 10 talents/positions you'd sell the farm for?

here's what atlanta gave for julio jones:

In exchange for getting the sixth pick, Atlanta gave the Browns five -- five! -- draft picks: their 1st- (27th overall), second- (59th) and fourth-round (124th) picks this year and their first- and fourth-round picks in 2012.

I just don't like that.

Pierre Garcon and Harry Douglas AND we draft a "big" receiver.

Pierre Garcon is a quality deep threat at a Patriot price.

Lloyd and Wayne .......... give me the younger players. Lloyd's familiarity with the system would be acceptable instead of Douglas but he'll cost bucks.

Part ways with Branch and Ocho.

I wonder how much lloyd would really hold out for.
he's already said he wants to play for mcd, and if he signs some reasonable 2 year deal he might be thinking he could put up the kind of numbers that would set him up for an even bigger score.

moss tore up money to come here and signed a cheap deal, and I think they'd pay more than that original moss contract.

if he wants to play with mcd and brady on a contender I doubt he tries to break the bank, but I guess it depends if someone throws crazy money at him.

The team needs to develop a consistent rushing attack with Ridley and Vereen in the off-season to take pressure of Brady and the passing offense. Brady seems to be going through an early-career-John-Elway phase, i.e. not playing his best in the most important games. Brady's a fantastic QB and I'd take him over anybody in the history of the league, but he is relied on too heavily in the offense.

Disclaimer: This isn't a knee-jerk reaction to today's loss. (I promise)

Anybody think we make a move for Reggie Wayne?

He's a Free Agent. Peyton will surely be gone. Wayne doesn't want to go through the whole rebuilding phase at this point in his career. Will want to play for a contender.

I have thought this. Belichick has a ton of respect for Wayne, and unlike Ocho, Wayne dots the i's and crosses the t's. I think he'd be a fine addition. They need help on the outside, re-sign Welker and inside the hashes they are still deadly.

Offensively, I only see 2 positions that really need to be fixed.
WR-Franchise Welker with the intent to sign him to a multi year deal, re-sign Branch cheap, draft a WR like Kendall Wright or Michael Floyd in the 1st round. Let them compete to see who is the #2 or the #3. You'd hope the kid wins out and Branch's playing time/role can be scaled back a bit but if not, you've got plenty of weapons.
C-Draft Peter Konz in the 1st round and re-sign Connolly to compete for the starting C position or provide very solid depth.

Defensively:
Edge Rusher (4-3 DE, 3-4 OLB)-Make a huge push for Mario Williams. With Brady having a 3-5 year likely window left (and perhaps a similar one for Belichick?), it's time to get aggressive and bold. Don't be scared off by how the Adalius signing ended, people forget how good Adalius was in '07. That would've been a hell of a signing if Adalius were 27 like Mario is. Adalius just got old on our watch and for some reason, went from the guy making humble pie t-shirts to a cancer in the locker room. Mario's the scheme versatile, in his prime defensive difference maker that rarely becomes available. Jump on this rare circumstance.

I'd re-sign either Carter or Anderson to pair up on the edge with Mario. Carter is probably more likely to come at a reasonable price due to age/injury/wanting to win a title at the end of his career. But if you could keep Anderson at a fairly cheap price, I'd love to do so. He's got a lot of talent, I just would fear giving a guy who has been as inconsistent as him too much $$$.

Defensive back-I don't think it makes a huge difference whether we draft/sign a corner or a safety considering the versatility McCourty showed this year and the fact I think that Ras-I Dowling has that same kind of ability to switch to FS. I just want another talented defensive back to add to the mix considering that while there's some talent back there, it's got issues too.

McCourty had the horrible sophomore slump, Sterling Moore flashed a lot down the stretch but still has a lot to prove, Dowling has a lot to prove health wise as well as on the field. So while based on talent, I could see something like McCourty returning to form, Dowling converting to safety successfully and Arrington and Moore being good enough #2 and #3 corners, I think it's asking a lot to go right and we need to add more talent back there.

The rest of the holes you are talking about are minor depth issues. Add a late round RB to replace Benjarvus in draft, some additional DL depth to go with the kids who flashed like Love/Deaderick as well as a returning kid like Pryor, etc.

A WR, a C, a DE and a DB while re-signing some of our own guys are the big holes I see.

Get rid of Branch, Ocho, Faulk, Warren, Elis, and Anderson. Then draft, draft, draft!

We wasted 2 draft picks on RBs last year.

No way we take another RB.

I said late round. The idea was that I DON'T want to spend much on another RB, either in FA or the draft. I want to see what Ridley and Vereen can do in bigger roles. I don't consider them wasted picks at all, certainly not Ridley, and it's too soon to tell on Vereen.

I think they both have an explosiveness that could make this offense tougher to defend. Love BJGE's heart but you never have to worry about a big gain from him as a defense.

The Franchise number isn't crazy high. I expect them to Franchise Welker to keep him for next year but with his age I don't expect a 4 year extension.

We've likely seen the last of Mike Wright also.

So thats Wright, Warren, and Shaun Ellis gone.

3 Defensive Linemen... and we're left with just Wilfork, Love, Deaderick, Pryor.

Look for DL picks in the draft this year

I still think Warren can play a role.
We should draft a WR even if we have to trade up. We must find our AJ Green/Julio Jones. Drafting a good WR shouldn't be rocket science for an NFL team. Lloyd and Wayne are old. I'll still get Lloyd but I'm not a fan of getting Wayne here. He won't be worth his $$

My thoughts group by group
QB- no changes
RB- expect improvement from Ridley and Vereen, no changes needed
OL- need to add 1 interior lineman starter in draft or FA to upgrade
TE- need to add 1 near starter quality TE since our offense now depends on them so much, for depth.
WR- High need for outside WR with deep speed.
DL- high need for 1 starter quality. Hope to re-sign Carter, one of Anderson/Ellis.
LB- high need for 1 outside LB/pass rusher
DB- high need for 1 safety for upgrade. I expect Dowling to help, Mccourty cant be any worse and Moore and Arrington played pretty well so no changes to CBs.

To Sum: I see 4 high needs, that would provide a significant upgrade from this years team that we should be able to easily fill from our 4 high draft picks.

Lloyd is NOT coming to New England.

We didn't have McDaniels last year either. Instead BB went out and got his man Ocho. Now that Ocho is probably gone and McD is back that is why everyone is saying Lloyd has a good chance of coming here.
