Someone in the media finally uses a little common sense in looking at the match up between the Pats and the Dwarfs. He can't understand the hype about the Giants.

"I’m surprised that so many people (here, anyway) are picking the Giants — if only for this reason. No team like the 2011 Giants has ever won a Super Bowl.

"Point is: The Giants were very ordinary, until the end of the season, when they were suddenly terrific. There’s no real precedent for any team like these Giants winning a Super Bowl."

But I do think it means that if the Giants win on Sunday, they will become — by the numbers, anyway — the worst team to ever win the Super Bowl.

* * *

And so on. But usually when you go into the Super Bowl, you can look back through the years and find a team that matches up pretty well. The 2011 Patriots, for instance, match up almost precisely to the 2009 Saints. Look:

Joe Posnanski » Posts An Unusual Super Bowl «

The Giants are trying to become the first team to be outscored during the season and win the Super Bowl.

• The Giants are trying to become the first 9-7 team to win the Super Bowl. The only teams with nine or fewer victories to win the Super Bowl are the 1967 Packers (9-4-1), who played only 14 games, and the 1982 Redskins (8-1), who played only nine games because of the strike.

• The Giants are trying to become the first team to give up 400 points (25 points a game) and win the Super Bowl.

• The Giants are trying to become the first team to lose four games in a row and win the Super Bowl.*

*Heck, 28 of the 45 Super Bowl winners didn’t lose four games all season.

Point is: The Giants were very ordinary, until the end of the season, when they were suddenly terrific. There’s no real precedent for any team like these Giants winning a Super Bowl.

Much more...............

this is really a crock --- the giants are a good team, give them some respect for christsake.

was it the very ordinary team that already beat us earlier in the year, or were they suddenly terrific that one week?

Yeah...... why don't you read the the article before you call it a crock, cause i know you didn't

Re: OMG Finally, Someone uses Logic to look at this game

I highly, highly, highly doubt ESPN and guys like Skip aren't very well aware of all this though.

It's just that their job isn't to tell the truth. It's to make those "who do you think it's going to win" polls say: 50/50.

Now we're getting a little bit of truth just before game time. They all know this though and have known it for months. It's not ESPN's fault people are gullible, uninformed, will listen to anything without doing any research and completely accept the Pats have a bad defense when they are ranked 11th in points allowed. It's also not their fault people who know better get mad at them because while they're smart to figure it out on their own, they aren't smart enough to look through their obvious selling techniques and understand they are into the Entertainment business, not professional football business. ESPN's job sometimes is to hide the truth and sell the hype. At other times it's the opposite. It's ever changing.

They all perform their jobs fairly well though if you ask me. Ultimately it's up to you, the individual, to make up your mind.

Well it would be better to be the worst SB winner of all time than be the team that lost the SB to the worst SB winner of all time. Giants are going to be a very tough match up.

Re: OMG Finally, Someone uses Logic to look at this game

The Giants suck.

Rodgers killed GB in the playoffs, Williams killed the 49ers and the refs cheated the Pats out of the 1st game against NY. I don't think this game is even gonna be close, depending on how Brady shows up in this one.

Looks like someone is drinking a lot tonight.

Re: OMG Finally, Someone uses Logic to look at this game

It really doesn't mean jack squat of how well you do in Sep,Oct or Nov

It's a matter of keeping your team alive well enough to get to the playoffs and work together to get to the Super Bowl

You leave out the fact that despite a 15-3 mark, the Pats D is close to being the worst defense in terms of stats to ever make the Super Bowl

Both teams have weak areas but have come together as two very tight nipped teams who are like a big family to get where they are today.

But then you also have to leave out the fact that statement is a complete freaking lie manufactured by perception not reality and has been all year.

Re: OMG Finally, Someone uses Logic to look at this game

If we win the turnover battle...we're going to win the game. Brady please don't act like Favre and chuck it deep and please be aware of the rush coming from your blind side. I don't want to see any strip sacks.

Soooooo, thats the key to making it to the superbowl.... having tight nips!

I had thought this whole time, that it was about having the best team, gameplan and execution. Plus having a cohesive, family mentality... you know, being tight knit.

Here's to hoping the Pats come out tomorrow night with much Tighter Nips than those dang Giants!
I'm sure they will be charged up for this game and sprint out of that tunnel tight enough to cut glass :D

Seriously man, i'm just playing. I couldn't help myself. Thanks for making me laugh and easing this Superbowl Eve tension :D
Hell, all this stress has had me so tight nipped that I can barely stand it :p

Chuck it deep to 85 all day.

You know I couldn't think of a word to use so 'nipped' sounded good at that moment :D

Nice read reflex tnx

I put a list of all the SB winners and losers with ranking in points allowed yards allowed on offense same on defense. I highlighted the more lopsided lower ranked teams in grey.

I grabbed the stats off pro-football reference.com also, just score's from the past 12 years on the right.

Thank you. You just provided another example why this playoff structure is no longer adequate. So many bad teams in the last 10 years have made the Super Bowl.

Huge difference in the last 10 years and everything else. Especially compared to the first 15 years. More and more great teams are getting shafted and bad teams rewarded.

Yes any team can beat any team on any given Sunday. It is just another game, from a football point of view. But the whole point of having the regular season and playoffs is to pin point the ones who deserve to play in it. The ones who do it consistently. The one who deserve to be recognized by such a great game as the Super Bowl.

This is the society we live in now. Consistent excellence is hated because it's too hard to achieve. We want instant gratification. We want the average to be on the same level as the greats, even if it means shortcuts.

Guess I'll just have to deal with it and accept it for the time being, but doesn't mean I gotta like it or respect it the same.

The 2009 Saints called to say they are offended.

The Giants are taking the low from the past decade down a few pegs, lol. I wasn't worried about this team being an SB contender after putting the numbers together a few months ago, thats for sure. The stats below probably should have been added to the list but there's no winner or losers yet, so I kept them off.

.......................................offense.....defense..
year..Team.......................pnts..yds..pnts...yds
2011 New England Patriots.....3.....2.....15.....31
2011 New York Giants...........9.....8.....25.....27

with the exception of the Pats back to back losses to The Steelers and the Giants.....? Those 2 games are near the top of the list of reasons a lot of people are not picking us.

Interestingly enough, when Mike Lumbardi asked BB "when did you realize this team was mentaly tough" without hesitation he replied "pittsburgh game no question"
