INDIANAPOLIS — Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Friday morning that even if New England wins on Sunday, he’s not thinking about retirement.

Responding to a question about whether or not a win on Sunday would make him decide that it would be an appropriate time to call it a career, Belichick, who has been head coach of the Patriots since 2000, said he’s enjoying things too much to ride off into the sunset.

Now, while I don't for a second think he'll be retiring soon, why would you take him at face value? Not exactly his style to be upfront on such things

Isn't his contract expiring this year?

I am confident he will re-sign (if this year or next); but it would be nice if that was locked in.

I was wondering a bit if the McDaniels hiring wasn't also a step towards locking in a succession plan. But then, since the BP-Jester succession plan left such a bad taste in his mouth; I am not sure he would even go down that road. But he is totally anal in all other planning; so I would think he has that organized for Kraft as well.

I think BB wants to smash all NFL records with Tom and then to solidify himself as best coach, do it again AFTER Tom. I see him here for 10-15 more years.

Because I think he knows he's finally got the core of what he's been looking for in a team, and I think he truly wants to build on it and see it through.

As much as he says stats do not influence what he does and what motivates him, currently he is at 175 wins.. right behind Knox(186), Reeves(190), Noll(193), Schottenheimer(200) and Paul Brown(213)

I think he will minimally want to surpass Brown, so he can included in the conversation as one of the greatest of all time..

Lambeau, Landry, Hallas and Shula can remain the top 4 of all time...

I think you are quoting just wins with the Pats and/or just reg season. I thought he already was at 200 if you counted his Browns days.

I don't see why there was enough uncertainty for people to respond.

BB loves is work. BB is defined by this work. BB's father was also defined by this work. What did Steve Belichick do for kicks after he retired from coaching? He pretended he still was a coach, especially but not only in his specialty of coaching kickers.

I get the impression that Belichick really loves this year's team. He took some big risks, shedding big names and rebuilding around a tough, team-first attitude. There's such positive feeling coming from the players and BB alike about the team. Why would he even think of walking away, when this new masterwork is just coming into its own?

He's already "coached" the Giants. It's part of his football legacy. But NE is where he defined and cemented that legacy as a HC. He isn't going to coach anywhere else in the NFL while he's still able and interested in coaching in the NFL. Kraft will want him at least that long, and he's as fond of Robert as he is the Mara family. It's just where he grew up as a coach and made many of his lifelong connections (Pioli, RAC, Charlie, Tuna) that helped him get to where he is here. Talking about it gets emotional for him, like Tommy recalling draft day. But a lot of that was the memories tied to the facilities, which don't exist any longer...either. When he leaves here it will be to do something else, possibly coaching/teaching related like Annapolis (where you don't have to recruit) or Wesleyn Lacrosse...but not NFL football related.

Cowher is holding out for the Giants gig. Coughlin's late season surges must be driving him batty. Tom is 65 though so he shouldn't have to wait too much longer. That job will become available way before Bill is ready to "retire". His loyalty now is too the guy who paid a draft ransom to secure him and endured 18 months of media mockery for hiring a coach the media labeled unstable among other things. And to the teams he won Lombardi's with as a HC. One day he will get even more emotional talking about those memories. But he ain't there yet, fortunately, he's still living those days and creating those memories.

I doubt BB retires before Tom Brady. He has a young team he will try to ride out for many years to come. He will groom Brady's replacement and then leave,IMO!

But that would put him at 70-75 years old. He's already said he'll not stick around so long like Marv Levy did.

My guess would 5-8 more years max.
