Scar is a coach I always wished there was more articles on....

What he has done this year with the O-Line(And since I have been a Pats fan TBH) has been pretty special. Of course Jackie Mac nails it...

Dante Scarnecchia always there...

Nice find. I enjoyed reading that.

Re: Jackie Mac+Dante Scarnecchia=Gold

"And if you're not Scar, you better not say anything to that offensive line," Wilfork said. "Those are his guys. I've seen Bill head over there to say something and have Dante tell him, 'Bill, leave us the hell alone."'

That's awesome.

MacMullan's on fire this week. That's two great articles on fascinating subjects, while pretty much everyone else is pounding their laptops about one of two or three easy topics.

Agreed, she is on fire....

Is Jakie not a Hall a fame B-Ball columnist?

She's had a whole string of must-reads recently. And I suspect it's her skill that makes the subjects seem fresher...e.g. her Gronk profile a couple of weeks ago really stood out as painting a compelling picture of a fierce-goofy manchild.

One thing that sets a lot of these pieces apart is just good old-fashioned REPORTING. Where so many lazy writers will just interview Gronkowski's dad or his college coach and write up the interview as an article, MacMullan gets both parents, the college coach, both high school coaches, and a smattering of teammates for good measure. That lets her craft a three-dimensional portrait from all of the different angles on the subject.

I just hope jackie mac keeps this up and doesnt dredge out an article like she wrote on/with asante on superbowl sunday last time around...

Re: Jackie Mac+Dante Scarnecchia=Gold

Scarnecchia has experienced some new situations this season. When McDonald was in at center, Waters initiated a silent count, enabling the less experienced McDonald to concentrate on the defense. When Brady was ready to go, Waters tapped McDonald's hip to let the center know it was time to snap the ball.

"We had never done that before," Scarnecchia said. "In fact, I relied totally on Brian's ability to do it because they had used it so much in Kansas City.

Using the grizzled veterans pays off again. BB makes mistakes like everyone else, but when he hits, we get great stories like this.

Incredible story. Helps explain how the Patriots survived with a 4th-string practice squad center while the Jets fell apart without their starter!

Was that the "Samuel is money in the bank" article?

Samuel is money in the bank - The Boston Globe

(Pay wall) Going by memory and google, I pretty sure that was it.

Jackie MacMullen on Dante Scarnecchia..

For a writer who supposedly hates BB and the Pats, another nice article about a major cog in the Patriots wheel. Some nice anecdotal comments from Wilfork, Mankins and Neal.

Molding the players into one unit is where Scarnecchia sets himself apart. He breeds a fierce loyalty and trust among his charges, so much so that defensive lineman Vince Wilfork claims the offensive line is the most tight-knit group in the locker room.

"And if you're not Scar, you better not say anything to that offensive line," Wilfork said. "Those are his guys. I've seen Bill head over there to say something and have Dante tell him, 'Bill, leave us the hell alone."'

"Scar is going down fighting right beside you,"' Neal added. "Even if you're wrong, he's going to have your back. It doesn't matter whether it's Bill or [former offensive coordinator] Charlie [Weis], he's going to tell them, 'I've got this."'

Re: Jackie MacMullen on Dante Scarnecchia..

Her other article, describing what it's like for the players to watch film with BB, is also a worthwhile read.

She's a good writer. Where does this "hates Belichick" stuff come from?

Not sure it surfaced last week on another thread, personally enjoy her columns..

I do remember her line before the 2nd jet game " Jets over Pats, these are dark days for Belichick and Brady with the patriots" or something like that...

That whole "Leave my players alone" attitude rang very familiar to me as I was in the military. I was not surprised when I looked up his bio to see that he's a former Marine SGT. I thought I might find a military background when I read that paragraph.

That's exactly where that attitude comes from. Those are Dante's players and if BB or anyone has a problem with them, talk to Dante, otherwise leave them alone.

It's a very military attitude and one I'm sure the lineman respect a lot as I've been on both sides of that attitude. That's just being a good "Sgt".

Without a good offensive line Brady would be just average or maybe a little bit above.

Probably from this board having a shared insecurity complex where any article whose topic isn't about how great and perfect the Patriots are is deemed a hit piece.

To be fair she did have some not so nice things to say during the whole Mangini handshake nonsense. Can't remember exactly what. Not that it matters either way.
