OT: Manning arm strength not returning, career in doubt because of it

Agree this is sad if true. Not with a bang but a whimper.....

Agree with those too who think it should be put on the back burner until after the Superbowl, but it seems like it's media driven, rather than Manning driven.

I hope for his sake that he thinks about his life going forward and makes the best decision based on how well he will live for the next 50 years, not on how well he can play for the next few years.

even if it's true re his arm strength, I don't think he's retiring any time soon. I'd expect him to continue rehab, treatment, etc. at least into next season before calling it quits.

It will sure be interesting to see how this all plays out.

I've always respected him as a football player. I think his level of play had a direct effect on the Pats, as in quite often the road to the SB went through Indy (or vise versa). So NE had to play better, too.

Like most around here I got Manning fatigue with his commercials  But being a fan of the game, it never took away my appreciation of what he did on the field.

I hope he can retire on his terms, whenever that is.

Could not disagree more with those lamenting press coverage of Manning The Second's issues this week. I avoid all SB coverage like the plague, excepting reports on player health about which thanks to Patsfans posters I'm well appraised. Manning is a great distraction and stress reliever since we have no dog in the fight. Personally I wish him the best of health.

Super Bowl press coverage most always irritates me more than it informs me. I'm not the self-flagellating masochist who with rabbit ears fully up searches for every negative tidbit and then goes into full offended mode. Your mileage may vary.

Hate to see his career end this way if it is in fact the end, but I did see this potentially coming last preseason. Too bad for the Colts that they didn't think it was a possibility when they signed Manning to the huge contract.

This would be terrible if true. I don't know about you guys, but I actually missed Peyton even this season. He is great for the league.

This news truly makes me sad as a fan of the game. I like to see a player leave on his or her own terms rather than being forced out by injury or even simply old age. I really hope that this IS NOT true and that he is able to return and play like he did before the injury. The guy is the ultimate professional and is a coach on the field. I like and respect him a great deal, and I would love to see him suit up again.

I also have a bit of a selfish reason in that I really don't want this to muddy things when the debate arises as to who is or was truly better between Manning and Brady. I can see people bringing up the fact that his career was cut short as the main reason why, should Brady go on to have continued statistical success, it would be discredited to some degree. People already look for all kinds of reasons to, especially statistical, to say Manning is better than Brady. They will totally choose to forget that Brady also missed a full season in his career (assuming that's all Manning ends up missing).

Manning has played in three more seasons than Tom. Brady would have to play until he's 37/38 to accumulate the same amount of season Peyton has played in, assuming he never plays another down. If that's the case, and they both end up with the same number of seasons played, I really don't see how anyone could make the argument you are suggesting.

I can care less about attention hog Manning and his PR machine he is running during SB week.

Chris Mortenson was on Mike and Mike this morning practcally foaming at the mouth that Manning is not retiring. I think everyone is just waiting for the Colts to turn him loose and wondering where he'll end up next.

I used to hate Manning, now the hate is more towards his little brother. Peyton earned my respect throughout the years and the Brady Manning rivalry will always stand as one of the bests. Surely one of the greats.

He is the yang of Brady.

This would be terrible news for the NFL. But lets face it, it would not be completely unexpected given the type of injury. There was rumors the injury was career ending at the start of the 2011 season. I just can't see how he could possibly risk paralysis just for the sake of playing football. I suspected he would retire once I heard the surgery that was needed. If it is true I will have missed the opportunity to see one of the greatest QB matchups live. But players get old, get injured, and need to move on so that we may have new matchups. Just look at our Brady. The end of Bledsoe was his start. I hope for the Colt's sake Luck can fill some big shoes.

In all honesty...

It is sad that he might go out this way. Never want to see someones life and/or career stunted by physical impairments.

But in truth, I am not sorry that we won't have to face him. High level competition is one thing, but as a fan, I want my team to win Superbowls regardless of the competition. if this means wishing for weaker competition.. then so be it.

one thing stands out in my mind;
Without Manning... the Pats have 1 more Lombardi residing at "1 Patriot Place"

No Manning, means the Pats likely reach Superbowl 41.. and likely win it.

Of course... Probably get the same outcome that week if there is no flu virus doing rounds in the Pats locker room, on a level that would make Bibi Jones jealous :D

I admit he's an all-time great, but I'm sick of seeing his ugly mug on TV. Like Motley Crue sang, Don't go away mad, just go away.

I wish no harm on him in his personal life, but I'm sick of him and his brother. This would singlehandedly be the worst sports loss I've ever experienced considering in Indy against Eli and the arrogant Giants. They BETTER win this game, and if they don't win it, please just get blown out so as not to tease me.

My question of course is:

Will the last person to use Peyton Mannings locker before it is another Colts locker, be Tom Brady? :rocker:

It a rough game and it takes its toll. Sorry to see him go. I wonder if he would make a great coach?

I think if a player is injured the player needs to pass a physical before he can be released. If the player doesn't pass the team and the player must reach agreement on an injury settlement.

If I am right Manning will get a significant settlement from the Colts if released.

I think this is a misreading of injury settlements (though I admit my own understanding is a little murky).

An injury settlement is generally used during the season. The player is "waived injured," and would have to be placed on IR at full salary unless the reduced settlement is agreed upon. By agreeing to a settlement, the player pockets cash and has the chance to sign on with another team -- or even the same team again -- once healthy. So players agree to the settlement to improve their chances of continuing a football career, and teams like the settlement because it saves them some $$.

In this case, Payton has already spent his season on IR at full salary for an injury sustained prior to the season. I believe they should be able to cut him freely.

Regardless, though, there is a cap on injury settlements that's a relative pittance for a player like Manning (< $500K).

Shameful news. Arm strength seems to be one of the last things to go in a quarterback. Favre was still able to sling a fastball at the end of his career. Warner could still sling it. Marino might even throw with some velocity still. It's usually the mobility and the physical strain on the body that makes quarterbacks retire.

If true, Manning is being robbed of some valuable football years by serious injury instead of age.

I thought the rules specifically prohibited a player waived from IR from re-signing with the team that put him on IR, but I could be wrong.

In any case, I imagine that such a player would still be subject to the waiver wire (which would prevent, say, a playoff team from releasing a player IRed during TC so that they could resign him and activate him for the playoffs).
