Bob Ryan Is Officially Out Of Ideas

I'm watching this ******* clown on ESPN's The Sports Reporters right now and I am steamed. Please excuse the language but I hope Tom Brady and the Patriots are half as pissed off as I am right now with the disrespect being extended to him and the team. *******s.

Mo said it well, but I have a different way of saying it. The cause and effect is backwards.

People do not hate the Pats because of Spygate -- people use Spygate to justify despising the Pats. It's pure envy. Thie Pats success is not supposed to happen in football. Teams do not win SBs with so few pro bowl players.

I'm going to guess that places you would hear things like "Belicheat" the most are Miami, Buffalo, Long Island, Pittsburgh, Oakland, and St. Louis.

Yes, in post-9/11 2001, who better to root for than an underdog named the Patriots. But since then, the Pats kept winning, Belickeck is not glib -- he gives nothing to the media. Brady does not sell himself to numerous advertisers, and then leads a supermodel lifestyle instead of huntin' and fishin' down in Mississippi.

On the merits, Spygate is ridiculous -- improperly taping signals on defense for LATER use in analysis. Coaches like Shanahan and Jimmy Johnson said that stealing signs DURING the game is easy anyway, but of limited value. Since being "exposed," the Pats have become more of an offensive team and less of a defensive team with as many or more wins later than before.

The sad part is that this non-issue will be in paragraph 1 or 2 of every obituary on BB and it's just not right. If someone like Bob Ryan wants to be useful, he will do what he can to point out how ridiculous this is.

Will never happen and the reason why is Boston sports mediots are committed to the goal of proving themselves to be superior intellects to the hacks from Dallas or Denver or NY who make excuses and fall in love with their subjects on field accomplishments to the detriment of...something. ;)

If the Pats win next Sunday, all of the Spygate stuff needs to die. If there is ANY organization being watched by Goodell and gang, it's the Pats. If the Pats win, there will be no "excuse" for why we won this season. But no matter what, people will somehow drag Spygate into it. I agree with the poster who said people hate us because we win. BB's external personality doesn't help, but it's because we win and people are sick of us. I'm sure if the Colts went to 5 SB's in 11 years, you'd see the same hatred, even with Manning (who everybody outside of NE love because his "commercials are so funny"). People hate teams that win consistently.

People hate the Patriots because they win and they win lots and lots of the time and they come from a region that wins lots and lots of the time. The country is sick of US. :D Ain't it great!!!

PS - Bob Ryan was out of fresh ideas long ago. He and Borges and Shaunessey can disappear tomorrow and nobody would care.

As a Yankee and Pats fan, I am like whatever. People hate success and lots of it. Spygate is only a fraction why the Pats are hated.

I live in the Los Angeles area and what Bob Ryan says is true. I mean of course if it was found that the Tampa Bucs or someone were cheating no one would care because they don't win.

But everywhere I go people bring up the Spygate garbage and how the Patriots haven't won a Super Bowl since (as if going 18-1 with the best offense ever might negate the argument).

This is why this Super Bowl means so much. To finally shut up those idiots say we haven't won anything since Spygate ergo we can't win without Spygate.

Spygate is easily debunked by :

Since (and including as we lost the camera in the first half of week one) 2007 the Patriots are 64-16 and have been to two Super Bowls in five years. And that includes one year that Brady missed entirely.

80% winning percent in the regular season and two Super Bowls.

That would be a fine argument if we stopped winning. As you (all) know, we have won more since then and all our SB have been a flip of a coin. 80% winning% and two SB appearances in five years is plenty for most thinking people.

I know its difficult and not many people have the will power to do it, but I'm a master of it !

I have completely stopped watching any TV coverage in any sports channels including radio (BTW, johnston and flynn show suck big time and I heard them for a whopping ~1 minute, no wonder they on on weekends ! )

try it and you will like it :D

It is logically, but another title will not end it. BB was considered to be dour and arrogant before Spygate, and that just fueled that hatred. He is nationally viewed as one of the best if not the best head coach in the game, while at the same time is viewed as a cheater who needs a competitive advantage to win. Those two views wouldn't appear to be reconcilable, but they appear to co-exist.

Since Spygate, the Pats have had a perfect season and a ridiculous winning percentage. Brady went down for a year, and the Pats went 11-5 without him. The last two years are 14-2 and 13-3. Critics claimed the Pats couldn't win a playoff game (ignoring that they got to the title game while under heavy scrutiny in 2007) and now have won 2 this year. Even if the Pats win this, the argument will become how difficult it has been to win another after winning 3 out of 4 pre-Spygate.

A win in this game resolves nothing for those harping on Spygate. It will still be there, as it will be when BB is considered for the Hall of Fame. There are those who still believe Brady is just a 'system' guy. A win here does not end that foolishness either. The arguments are moronic if one looks to reality and logic, but they will not die because winning breeds contempt and all other fans want to identify concrete reasons why their particular team fails to win a title or even sniff a Super Bowl year after year.

The reason Spygate is brought up is because the Patriots win.

I mean, look at the evidence. The Patriots offense actually IMPROVED after Spygate. What does that tell you?

That Welker + Moss > Gaffney + Caldwell? :singing:

Heck, if TB were caught cheating this year, they'd be the laughingstock of the league for years to come. . . .

I live in the Dolphins market, hear it from fans every week, hear sports radio callers bring it up constantly, and hear the hosts in the local sorts media talk / debate about the legacy of BB / TB being affected by spygate.

Not daily, but certainly never a week goes by without it (spygate) being brought up. Usually they don't even have the facts right and insist that the Patriots videotaped practices.

I would agree that SUCCESS is the REAL reason for the hatred, but spygate is the go-to excuse.

Get out of Florida then....reason number 452 to do so.

The hatred started long, long before 2007. I think it was around the time they won 3 Super Bowls in 4 years.

It is also because of the way we won them.
The Patriots have always won with a sum of the parts philosphy. Role players are important, the hot expensive free agent is a bad investement.
The Patriots are roundly considered smarter than everyone else. Thats the brand.
On top of that, just when you think their time has passed, they are right back.
Over time that creates dislike.

Here's the reason people think Spygate was worse than it really was. The first-round pick. To many fans, that first-rounder is gold and you have to "F" up pretty seriously to have one taken away.

Goddell was the new sheriff in town and used too heavy of a hand when meting out punishment. Plus, he was angry that BB tried to play cute with "misinterpreting" the memos banning sideline taping.

Don't forget the whole, "Goodell destroyed the tapes!" thing. You wouldnt believe the kind of stuff I hear living outside the region. People have talked themselves into believing that the Patriots had an underground network of spies that taped everything.

Agreed. I firmly believe that if Cameragate had happened a few more years into Goodhell's reign the penalty wouldn't have been as high -- money and a 3rd round pick or something like that. Maybe even just a fine. But he was new and felt he needed to assert his authoritay. Especially over a team with a powerhouse owner that was very involved in picking the commish.

He likely felt (and probably somewhat legitimately) that if he was perceived as going too light on the Pats & Kraft he would have been hamstrung going forward.

Thehatred started in 2003. I think going into that season a lot of folks thought the Patriots were just a fluke that got lucky. Than in 03 they see BB was one serious defensive coach, and that Tom Brady was no one year wonder. Ever since, the Pats have been hated. 07 is just everyone's excuse. People didn't want to admit before that how much it used to make them irate when the Patriots would get all the breaks. At this point I think folks are just sick of our Patriots...Oh well:D
