Informative article and injury chart which lists the number of games lost by starters because of injury; the number of starters who finished the season on reserve lists; the number of players who started all 16 games; and the key injury:

a lot can be said about his finding. SD fans will no doubt find a way to argue they didn't benefit from health. the chart at the end really caught my eye though. Starters games lost due to injury, recent superbowl champions:

2005 Pittsburgh 16
2004 New England 55
2003 New England 87
2002 Tampa Bay 17
2001 New England 26
2000 Baltimore 21
1999 St. Louis 11
1998 Denver 14
1997 Denver 29
1996 Green Bay 25

two of these things are not like the others, two of these things are just not the same.

Yeah, it is utterly, confoundingly amazing. The league better look out if NE ever really gets healthy. I wonder what NE's numbers looked like last season?

Don't tell the SD fans they believe they have been battered by an unbelievable rash of injuries and that is the root cause of their defense's average totals for Team stats.

That is what is funny about people bringing up the 3 point SB wins. If the same team that took the field for week 1 took the field for the SB, those games wouldn't have been close.

This regime's greatest accomplishment may very well be their ability to remain competitive despite injuries, year after year after year.

Poor Jets and Cowboys, near the top of this list yet go one-and-done in the playoffs.:D

Great find, Seneschal2, it makes me even prouder to be a Pats fan.

Very interesting. It endorses our spread the CAP $$ so we have a deep number of players/ rep[lacement parts. But why so many breakdowns?? Age??
BB starts a lot of smart veterans; they may be more subject to injury.

thanks a lot for posting! what really intrigues me is the lack of correaltion between injury losses and the Pats' recent SB wins.

What I found interesting was this year's stats. Pat only had 5 starters that played all 16 games! That is the lowest of any playoff team. And we lost a total of 46 games due to injury, one of the higher numbers amongst playoff teams. As a comparison, Indy lost 49 games to injury (of which 16 was the non football injury to Simon), 3 more than the Pats, but they had 12 starters that played all 16 games.

Speaks volumes for the Pats ability to insert the back up and not miss a beat. 53 players all with multiple skills. Teamwork is job one.

This is a good list, but I have a question about there being only 2 starters on IR for the Patriots.

From Yahoo Sports:

Injured Reserve

Player Status Injury

M. Mitchell S IR Arm
B. Gardner LB IR Leg
T. Jones S IR Leg
O. Santiago TE IR
R. Gay CB IR Hamstring
B. Yates G IR Leg
G. Mills RB IR Thigh
J. Miller P IR Shoulder
J. Seau LB IR Arm
E. Wilson S IR Hamstring
D. Davis LB IR Knee
P. Pass RB IR Hamstring
K. Walter P IR Left knee

Was Gay a starter? Was Seau a starter? Wilson? Pass?

Also, you'll note 2 punters on this IR list.

Someone enlighten me, please...

My reading of this list is that it applies to starters. In other words, in this article, it states the Pats have lost 46 man-games to starters.

According to Mike Reiss, in an earler column last month, the Pats have endured over 180 man-games lost due to injury. (Remember, just because you're injured doesn't mean you go onto the IR.)

So, given that, I think that's even more remarkable.

Yes, Teamwork is Job #1 on this team!

Pats 21st healthiest team in 2006

Rank: T-21
Team: Patriots
Games missed by starters: 46
Starters on IR: 2
Players starting all 16 games: 5 <---T-1st in NFL w/ Browns
Key loss: Eugene Wilson (12 games)

What I thought was even more impressive were the numbers for the past Super Bowl winners. Notice how the 2003 and 2004 Pats SMOKED their counterparts. Not surprising, as we all knew the amount of injuries in those years (2005, too):

Year Champion Games
2005 Pittsburgh 16
2004 New England 55
2003 New England 87
2002 Tampa Bay 17
2001 New England 26
2000 Baltimore 21
1999 St. Louis 11
1998 Denver 14
1997 Denver 29
1996 Green Bay 25

Here are the Pats' injuries from 2006. I have yet to make a 2006 list (it will likely only come as an excuse to a loss or as a 'wow' factor to a win):

Re: Pats 21st healthiest team in 2006

Although 21 is still far from impressive, I think those numbers are misleading. The Pats use the term "starter" very loosely. The starters at WR were different almost every game, so how do they measure it? Also, Chad Scott and Ellis Hobbs were interchangable at starting CB for awhile. Both of them missed games, but are they both counted, or are neither of them counted? I would just be interested to see how the numbers were put together. Pats injuries are pretty spread out from top to bottom.

Damn, I checked if this was posted before. Must have missed this one. Oh well. :)
