This is an interesting hire and it affects the Patriots, somewhat, because BB had been going to Rutgers for scouting more recently..

My son is a Buccaneer fan. (I know, I know) What's the story with this Schiano guy? I don't pay much attention to college ball so I don't know much about him.

He's been the coach at Rutgers for a few years. Helped turn that program around. Had guys like Ray Rice and Devin McCourty come through during his tenure..

That guy did a hell of a job with that program. I remember when Rutgers football was a complete after thought. He always seemed to produce a guy that makes you say "wow he went to Rutgers?"

Kenny Britt went to rutgers as well. How about the immortal Tiquan "eraserhead" Underwood.

Don't know how he will transition but he took that pinto and made it into a beamer.

Schiano did a whole lot with very little resources in Rutgers: not a big name school, not constantly on television, not a big name conference, no big name NFL stars for alumni, etc. Basically he overachieved and was far more successful than one could have reasonably expected in that position. It was somewhat like Steve Spurrier making Duke a winning football team, or when Northwestern won the Big Ten for the first time in sixty years. Okay, maybe not quite as dramatic as those two examples, but it was still a huge accomplishment.

The big question now will be whether or not he will be expected to do well with less resources than his competition. From the day Morris was hired Tampa Bay had one of the lowest, if not the lowest budget in the NFL. They're in a division that has to face Drew Brees, Matt Ryan and Cam Newton twice each, and they have the league's lowest payroll. If the organization continues to place profits over winning by spending as little money as they possibly can then Schiano is doomed to failure, no matter how good he is. If that's the way it plays out then maybe at that point Belichick will hire him to be part of his staff in Foxboro.

IIRC, and I am probably not exactly correct here, but wasn't Rutgers the only school in Div I to have never have had a winning season (or was it go to a bowl game) before Schiano got there?

Schiano brought in loads of highly recruited players to Rutgers and was 1 game over .500 with arguably the second or third most talented roster in the Big East after WVU and perhaps Pitt on a yearly basis. He is a former Miami assistant and was able to use those connections in recruiting Florida as well as stockpile his roster with top talent from NJ.

His team was good for a huge win every few years but they also lost to 1AA/fcs schools more often than any team in a BCS league should.

He is a great salesman and will be the face of the franchise but I don't see this lasting too long or ending well.
