Mankins vs Tuck - What happened the last time

I was having a discussion last night with one of the guys about the upcoming match-up, and we talked about the fact Mankins got owned by Tuck in the "game that shall not be named." He mentioned that he remembered seeing a really good thread about it after it was over.

Our Blocking TE Kyle Brady had his worst game...we couldn't find Maroney with a search warrant....play calling was very suspect too.

I don't remember the thread (i was in shock, i still haven't recovered) but i do remember Mankins doing his best impression of a turn style....one in which you didn't need to slow down to pay.

Our Blocking TE Kyle Brady had his worst game...we couldn't find Maroney with a search warrant....play calling was very suspect too.

I watched that game last night and was shocked at what I saw. Marroney ran hard and had some good runs. Brady had a fantastic game and was super focused.

Big things that stood out to me were the fact that the Pats started almost every drive on their 10 yard line. Very similar to the regular season game against the Giants this year.

The O-line was getting pushed around a lot and the Giants blitzed a ton. Actually the Giants defense looked a lot like a Jim Johnson Philly defense.

Manning was not a great QB. He made some bad throws and missed a lot of open receivers. He is a much better QB now. Assante's miss was hard to watch. The DB need to know that if you get the chance, you have to take it.

The Pats need to commit to the run and protect Brady.

Actually, if you read the thread in the OP you will see that they only blitzed on 13 out of 53 plays.

That was the problem: they were getting consistent pressure without extra rushers, meaning that they had plenty of guys in coverage. Nowhere to go with the ball.

Thanks Ian, this is a great find and quite interesting. I never read it, because I went on football lock down from the moment the game ended til about mid April and the draft started focus my mind forward.

I have always thought that losing Neal early in that game was the key reason the Giants were able to generate so much pressure, so if found it surprising to find that outside of giving up a sack during the last second desperation drive, Russ Hockstein's name did NOT come up much. Clearly Mankins and Kazcur were the main culprits.

Hard to say why Mankins had such a bad game. I'd be interested in seen a similar breakdown on the game in weak nine to see he was similarly abused.

I think this is a much different OL. Connolly is better at setting the middle. Light is playing at a very high level. Solder is NOT as vulnerable to the outside speed rush as Kazcur was, and Waters HAS to be considered an upgrade over Hockstein. Finally you just HAVE to think that Mankins would have a better game. It couldn't get much worse.

BTW- The changes in offense bode will for the Pats. In 2007 if you doubled Welker and Moss, you eliminated 70% of the Pats offense. Now Brady has a bigger variety of weapons and its geared to allow him to get rid of the ball faster.

I don't blame Hobbs, a 5-9 Smurf, for not being able to cover a 6-5 receiver one-on-one while dealing with a torn labrum and a groin injury. Excellent point Ken even though we don't have deep threat *Moss* which worked to our Detriment last time. This Time around we are more well rounded on Offense and can attack the Giants between the numbers. If they double Gronk and Welker...we have Hernandez - Branch - Woodhead and Edelman.

It's not their defense that scares me going into this game. It's all those weapons Eli has on offense.

I liked Hobbs' toughness, but the ball was at the 11, and he was playing 7 yards off, standing at the 4-yard line at the snap. By the time Hobbs crossed the goal line in coverage, he was 1-2 yards behind Plax. If you do the math on that one, it's pretty hard not to place some of the blame on him.

Once again, the Pats had Watson, that had a pretty good year for at TE back in that period in time, a deep threat in Stalworth, and a pretty good receiver in Gaffney. That team was much better at using the WHOLE field than this current team, you couldn't just flood the middle with that team like you can with this one.
