Scutaro wasnt the long-term solution here at SS. He was an average player who could be replaced fairly easily. I don't think they should have signed him for this year anyways so losing him now is not a big loss.
I do not hope this leads to signing Roy Oswald. An aging, injury prone NL pitcher trying to pitch here in Fenway Park does not instill confidence in me. IMO he pitches very soft and would not be a good fit here. Starting pitching is still a huge weakness for us after the top three. It was also a big weakness for the Yankees but they addressed it in a big way, getting Pineada and Kuroda. Pineada IMO is a STEAL. He will be their #2 immediately and is a potential #1 starter in the AL. And to get him for what they gave up is clearly a steal. Kuroda would have been a much better option than Oswald. Tougher pitcher, more motivated and with better stuff. Red Sox better wake up and do something to address their needs.

I never said Kuroda was brilliant and I wouldnt want him pitching for us either. I was trying to make a point and say that we shouldnt panic and sign a pitcher who wont be a very good fit here. I think Oswalt would get lit up in the AL East, especially here in Fenway. Just going on last years stats, Kuroda has much better stats than Oswalt across the board - ERA, BAA, WHIP. In fact, Oswalt's BAA was .280. That would rise to over .300 in the AL. I watched both Oswalt and Kuroda pitch numerous times last season, and saw them pitch in big games and pitch out of jams. I came away more impressed with Kuroda. Oswalt's back is a huge question mark and the chances of him staying healthy are pretty low.

Regarding the Yankees big trade, there is no question they got the better of the deal. Of course I know about Montero. He is an outstanding player and probably would have hit over 30 homeruns and 100 RBIs in that lineup this season. But his catching skills are limited and he would probably have to be used a lot at DH. The Yanks have better pure catching prospects in their organization. I am not questioning that they gave up a very good player. However, who wouldnt give up their top prospect for a potential #1 starter. Pineada is a beast. He will be the Yanks #2 guy. In his first season playing for a crappy team he had more strikeouts than innings pitched. His WHIP was 1.10 and his BAA was .211 (the exact same as Beckett who had an outstanding season). I have seen this guy pitch many times and his stuff is electric. With the Yanks lineup behind him, I predict a 20 game winner. I cant quite understand why Seattle let him go.

at this point in the offseason (any offseason) I have no problem with signing vets like Kuroda or Oswalt, as long as they aren't long-term deals. Kuroda or Oswalt for a year can only help either club given other available options.

I could certainly see Kuroda outpitch Oswalt this year -- or vice versa. I don't think you can just go by the prior season.

You're absolutely right about both Montero's catching abilities and both their potentials. Where I disagree is in the likelihood of them reaching their potentials and, regardless, about it being a "steal". I think there's a much higher chance that Montero becomes a 300 / 30 / 100 guy for the next 6 years + than of Pineda becoming a 1/2 guy for the next 6 years.

Hey Chico, its always fun to debate things with a knowledgeable baseball fan like you. You make some excellent points. It will be interesting to see how this trade pans out for both teams. However, my money is on Pineda being more of a success for his team over the next 6 years. With CC at the top of the rotation to tutor him and with that lineup, I think his potential will be much higher than it would have been with Seattle. On the other hand, while I agree that Montero could be a 300/30/100 in the Yankees lineup, I am not so sure he will come close to that playing in Seattle. Seattle's ballpark is more of a pitchers park. And in Seattle he will be one of the main offensive weapons and will have to hit higher in the lineup. More pressure on a young hitter. In NY, he could hit lower in the lineup and might not get as much focus and attention from the opposing pitcher as he will in Seattle. Just a thought.

However, my money is on Pineda being more of a success for his team over the next 6 years. All true -- though of course there will in other ways be more pressure on Pineda in NY (just as there would have been on Montero). We shall see...

Aviles performed pretty well last year and could be a nice player at ss stop this year. Besides, he is just there like Scutaro was to bridge the gap until they can get Iglesias ready. We didn't need to spend money on a high quality rf either. Ross isn't terrible and once Kalish is ready he could be a solid if not good player for us. If anything this team is getting more back to its roots by having a few tough, underrated players in the lineup to push the other guys.

As far as the trade goes, it wasn't a terrible one considering what Scutaro was to us. However, I will miss his toughness. It looks hit or miss as if we will get Oswalt, but at this point for a one year contract it wouldn't be a terrible signing. If not then they save the money and keep it available for a midseason signing if they need it.
