Somehow ESPN stats show Brady had a better game than Flacco. Their assessment doesn't pass the eye test to me, but, hey, what do I know. Guess his mistakes were less damaging. Or something like that.

Nice rant in the comments section from a Ravens fan:

Cant let it go can you? Brady couldnt possibly have played worse than Flacco could he? its gotten comical now. accept it. brady played worse! at least your pretty boy is still in the super bowl so you can talk about him two more weeks. brady had two picks called back because of penalties. did you forget? tons of drops from ravens. did you forget that? cmon man

QBR is more of a joke that NFL's passer rating. There is a reason everyone still uses the old statistic outside of ESPN.

Brady had 1 bad throw.. and then 1 poor decision. he is going against one of the NFL's top defense. He pretty much moved the ball down the field all day. They tightend up in the red zone and they had a few turn overs.

Flacco played well but he was playing against Juliene Edelman and Sterling Moore. Its not really fair to compare but w/e smart fans no that stats do not tell the whole story.

I am not trying to say Brady played great or anything.. He missed some guys out there.. All I am saying is that its hard to compare Brady and Flacco.. they are not playing against each other. But again intelligent fans understand that.

I like the concept of QBR, but clearly it is broken and needs to be overhauled.

It was one of Brady's worst 5 playoff games. He had 2 picks, should have had 3 or 4 if the Ravens didn't have dumb penalties. That 2nd pick in the 4th quarter, with the team only up 3 points, was one of the worst throws a QB can make in that situation.

Isn't it amazing when numbers show what we don't expect it means they must be broken. :D

Of course it would. TQB rating measures a player's contribution to his team. NFL Passer rating measures his passer rating and its correlation to winning.

Passer rating includes a lot of factors which have to do with the rest of your team. Receivers, play calling, offensive line...it's not just a QB's rating, it's your quarterback's rating within his core players.

TQB measures his individual contribution, and yeah it's quite subjective. Brady scored the winning points. He SHOULD be higher in TQB rating. He was probably still the better QB, just not the better passer. It also wouldn't punish Brady for his interceptions because of where they took place. That part I think it's great for the TQB rating. The other stuff, like down situations, and "clutch" scores is complete bullcrap.

I think it's great that Brady had a bad passer rating, and you know why? Because when the Ravens beat the Pats last time, Tom Brady had a similar passer rating and they won with Joe Flacco putting up a 10.0 NFL passer rating.

Payback is a ....I love it:D That stings a bit more considering Flaco played a damn good game. They're not the only ones who can win without a passer.

Brady didn't have a great game. But the Patriots had a lot of long scoring drives, that didn't look as great as they could have because of the red zone struggles. They also took plenty of time off the clock and gave our defense a boost. Putting up 23 points on the #1 pass defense in the NFL, to me, is more impressive than putting up 20 points on a defense that gets verbally slaughtered in this forum every day.

Brady is getting criticized because he underperformed in terms of expectations we have for him, while Flacco outplayed the expectations we have for him. I'm not sure that Flacco's performance was necessarily much better than Tom's.

Believe it or not ESPN is not blowing smoke out their asses, Brady had a good game. Now if we are talking on Brady grading levels, then no, his game was bad. He had a good/great game based on average QB grading against a top defense. Still don't feel like it was a good game on his part? Let's measure the game by successful drives. Now first let me clear up what we mean by a successful drive.

My definition of a successful drive is a little altered for the occasion of this weeks playoff teams. These were all good defenses the teams were playing with high stakes, meaning not a lot of points are going to be scored. Therefore I say a successful drive is one where you drive the ball down field and successfully put points on the board (either a TD or FG). Now there are 3 occasions where I make exceptions to this:

1. Punting the ball and getting a turnover to resume the drive splits that drive into 2 separate drives, not one whole drive. Since the offense leaves the field, and special teams comes out, I say that is considered a failed drive if you are punting the ball, another drive is started when the offense comes back onto the field.

2. If the offense starts with the ball within the opponents 30 yard line and fails to score a TD, I consider that a failure. If you get a FG in that situation it means you didn't suck enough to get knocked out of range, but the defense won the battle considering the hand they were given.

3. Kneeling the ball to end the game/half does not count as a drive.

With that said let's see the number of successful drives to drives each QB had on Sunday.

Alex Smith: 3/14

Eli Manning: 3/16

Joe Flacco: 3/11

Tom Brady: 5/9

Out of all the QB's who played yesterday, Brady did the most out of what he was given. When over half your drives are getting you points, I would say that's successful quarterback play. People will point and say he didn't throw a TD, but that was Brady playing the defense. That defense was perfectly setup to limit the throw, but was poorly setup to stop the run. BJGE gashed them the way everyone thought Rice would gash our defense. A good QB reads the defense and establishes the weakness of that formation, then puts the best play in to beat that formation. Brady did exactly that by allowing his team to run the ball as many times as they did (31 runs to 36 throws), which was the most balanced I think I've ever seen our offense attack this season.

And if it's not the TD's, it's the picks people point to. Those 2 picks were bad, but those defenders made plays on that ball that not many people make. If you look at the Giants game, Manning threw 2 balls that were soo bad that 2 defenders could have picked it off, and instead they crash into each other failing to catch it. Sometimes people make the plays, and sometimes you get lucky and they don't.

Brady passed in my eye test yesterday, in terms of QB play. He may have not been Brady, but he was still damn better than the other QB's who played yesterday.

Brady's level of difficulty was much harder than flacco but no one mentions that lol.

It was one of Brady's worst 5 playoff games. He had 2 picks, should have had 3 or 4 if the Ravens didn't have dumb penalties. That 2nd pick in the 4th quarter, with the team only up 3 points, was one of the worst throws a QB can make in that situation.

No bc the other two int were 1. A direct result of the penalty and 2. Tom slinging it for a free play after he saw the penalty.

I once saw the ESPN QBR have tim tebow with a better rating than brees or someone after completing 2-3 passes.

There are many ways to skin a cat.

Brady did not have his best day passing. Timing was way off and he floated some ducks out there. But, in terms of reading defenses and checking out of plays Brady had an exceptional day IMO. Brady selling out running for the game winning score at the goaline and for at least one crucial 1st down in Ray Lewis's face. Huge plays.

Brady didnt have as bad a game as most people are saying and Flacco didnt have as good of a game as people are saying. Flacco just flat out didnt see wide open recievers, Brady made a lot of good throws on third downs to keep the drives alive, granted we only got 3 points sometimes but the two interceptions make things seem worse than they were.

I don't think Brady's play was as bad as everyone seems to think. The two interceptions were amazing plays by a great Baltimore defense. He still completed 22 passes, many of which were fit into very tight windows. He kept many drives alive with key throws on third downs. Plus, he got the ball in the end zone on 4th down for the game-winning score.

Of course Brady was critical of himself for not playing up to his standards, but we've come to expect that. But I thought he did a good job of staying within the Pats gameplan, and not getting too frustrated after missing Gronk near the end zone and after throwing the two INT's.

He was playing against some of the greatest defensive players at their positions of all-time. Over the past ten years, that Ravens D has imposed their will on plenty of good QB's (the year P. Manning won the Super Bowl, the Colts beat the Ravens in the playoffs without scoring a single TD, and Manning threw 2 picks in that game)
