reposting this after I accidentally put it in the Draft forum-

Found this tidbit in an article on the Ravens offense from yesterday-

Smith also talked about last spring's draft process, one that saw the Patriots very interested in the former Maryland product.

"I pretty much did everything you could do with New England as far as the draft process goes," he said. "I met with them at the combine, did a private workout, and I saw them around a lot. They have a great coaching staff, and you can see with the way their track record has been they know how to win."

Well, we passed on him 3 times, twice in the second round when we took Dowling, then Vereen (just two spots ahead of Smith). Smith had good regular season numbers for a rookie with Flacco as his QB. Imagine what he could have done with Brady chucking him the ball.

50 catches, 841 yds, 16.8yd average, 7 TDs, 74yds longest TD.

Yes, the jury is still out on Vereen and Dowling but they've been non-factors all year while Smith is emerging as a star. I must admit going into Sunday's game it sure would look good to have Smith as our 3rd (2nd?) WR instead of Ocho...

The one position we can't evaluate very well in the draft...WR. If B.LLoyd signs with us though, it's all good:cool:

While hindsight is always 20/20, I would hold off on calling Smith an emerging star. Other than Boldin, there really is no other wr on that team. Smith runs a lot of go routes, who knows how he would've been able to fit in the Pats complicated offense. It seems as though the Pats receiving core is asked way more of them in order to execute on the field than the Raven wr's are asked of them and the reason for thst is #12.

Not quite sure STAR is the appropriate assessment just yet.
50 catches and 840 yards is pretty mediocre for a starting WR.
Of course almost half of the yards (317) came in 2 games, so was that a preview of a future star of was the guy who averaged less than 40 a game the rest of the season the real player? Only time will tell.
It should be noted in his last 7 games his numbers are 22-260-11.8-2, which isnt very impressive.

For a rookie his numbers are good. He also plays with a fellow called Joe Flacco. Boldin used to be a stud in Arizona as a #2 and his numbers have gone way down in that Ravens offense.

Aside from 2 games his numbers actually aren't even good for a rookie.

I was higher on Titus Young. I still am.

Time will tell, naturally.

I believe the book on Smith in college was that he was a burner but not a route runner. Not sure how he'd do in the Pats offense. With his speed he may have made a very nice complimentary part of the WR corps on the outside drawing safety help while Gronk, Hernandez and Welker gash the middle.

LOL WHAT?! Your expectations of rookies are ridiculous. You're a repeat offender of this, too.

PS: Torrey Smith didn't start the entire year. His first start was against the Rams where he caught 3 TDs.

PPS: Deion Branch, technically our #1, had very similar numbers to Torrey Smith. 10 year vet = rookie? Not bad, Torrey.

Ozzie Newsome got totally lucky on this Torrey Smith so I don't blame BB too much for passing on him. While great at identifying defensive talent, Newsome is the one guy that I can confidently say that he is even worse than BB at drafting wide receivers.

BB at least has Branch/Givens. Ozzie had literally blown all of his picks on wide receivers until Torrey Smith.

As I said outside of 2 games his numbers were not impressive.
Those numbers in the other 15 games?
40 receptions 533 yards 13.3 3 TDs,
If that is impressive to you, I don't know what to say.

So not being on the field is an excuse to prove he is better?
I gave the stats for his last 7 games, which were also not impressive.

How in the world is Deion Branch our #1? He is our #4 behind Welker, Gronk and Hernandez.

The takeaway is that there are very solid #1/#1a receivers available in the second round.

I don't know.
Smith ranked 72nd in receptions and 38th in rec yards.
Almost 40% of his yards were in 2 games.
That certainly isn't a VERY SOLID #1/1A in the NFL.
Not saying he couldn't develop into that possibly, but he certainly isnt there yet.

If the Patriots were looking at him then you have think he might suck but I don't think he has turned into Bethel Smith just yet.

Smith is a good player, but there's no need to criticize the Patriots for missing him just yet. Vereen was selected with the future in mind, IMO, and it's hard to blame the Patriots for that when you watch his college film.

Had Smith played on this team, it's very likely he wouldn't have seen the field much, given that we already have Welker, Hernandez, Gronk and Branch.

I have no doubt he would've produced more than Ochocinco, though.

It's always hard to say how players would fit in a different system, but production-wise he was a little better than Branch and significantly better than Ocho. It seems fair to compare him to Branch directly because they are both the 4th leading receivers on their team (Rice, Boldin, and ****son wre the Ravens top three, while obviously Welker, Gronk, and Hernandez were over here).

Branch has one more catch than ****son, but less yards. In addition, the Patriots threw far more than the Ravens, which means that while Branch only accounted for around 12% of catches and 13% of yards for the Patriots, Smith accounted for about 16% of catches and 23% of yards for the Ravens. So as a fourth target, Smith was more important to the Ravens than Branch was to the Patriots. Also, note that Smith was not significantly involved in the offense the first two weeks of the season, presumably because of his status as a rookie. Had he been ready to play those two games and produced at his average level for the rest of the season, he would have finished with about 57 catches and 961 yards.

Both Branch and Smith had some big games, and some games where they completely disappeared. Smith hasn't had a big game in a while, and was held to only one reception for nine yards in the Divisional Round, but Branch in the last four weeks of the regular season had only 3 catches for 37 yards and 1 TD (granted he was playing with injury problems, and missed the Denver game altogether). He made one big play in the Divisional Round on a 61-yard touchdown, but was otherwise fairly quiet, making only two grabs for 24 yards.

Overall, it looks as if Smith was able to produce in the Patriots offense as much as he did in Baltimore, he would have been an upgrade over Branch as a fourth target for Brady, and even more of an upgrade as a fifth target. He did put together a very impressive rookie campaign, being nearly as productive as some of the higher picks. For now, Branch's experience may prove to be more valuable in the playoffs than Smith's talent, as evidenced by their respective play last week.

Knowing what we do now, I would have liked to see Smith in a Patriots uniform. Time should tell whether the Patriots made a mistake in not drafting him, especially since Dowling and Vereen didn't play much this year.

Smith is just another run really fast, catch the ball sometimes, occasional big-play guy that Brady would never throw to because he wasn't in the right place, didn't make the right read, etc, etc ,etc. He might have started one game for the Pats when Branch was out. Besides that he would have been picking splinters out of his ass.

One great quarter against a 2-14 team doesn't have me convinced that he's a budding star. He had 3 TD's in one quarter against a bottom 2 team and 4 in the other 67 quarters this year. Which is more representative of Torrey Smith? Small sample size statistical outlier. That sounds more like one ****ty CB getting picked on by a WR that nobody had NFL game tape on than an NFL Star.

Boldin used to be a stud in Arizona as a #2 and his numbers have gone way down in that Ravens offense.

Went from being a #2 to #1! And when you are a #2 and the #1 is Larry Fitz, you are going to get decent amount of single coverage!

Especially with a decent #3 like Steve Breston!

Me and a couple friends from work went to a girl's place in jersey after a going to see this local band and somehow got on the topic of football.

Long story short.... Come to find out Travis Taylor leaves like 2 houses down from her lol says he's shown her his SB ring and probably more than that.
