I am not seeing the greatness of this SD defense other than sacks, which don't appear to be much of a factor in keeping the opposition from scoring their season average.

They have 17 more sacks than NE but allow 4.1 ppg more than NE - against weaker competition.

Thanks for this ;-)

as stated in other threads, the chargers are almost completely healthy (only a backup DLineman is still hurt). when the chargers are at full strength they have allowed 16 points TOTAL in 3 games.

Thanks for the numbers.

That's the tease of this week. There are times I roll my eyes in horror at the beating we will inevitably take at the hands of the greatest front seven in the history of the NFL. Then I look at stats like yours, scoring stats and Football Outsiders stats and realize the Charger defense is above average and no more - and can be beaten if we play well.

Back to Football Outsiders, as they take things like SoS into account, we have the 7th ranked offense, SD has the 14th ranked defense.

OK . . . let's get it on.

Absolutely PHENOMENAL post. Well done, colby.

Small sample sizes always produce false results. Also, you are not taking into account which three teams it was that were held to 16 total points.

does football outsiders account for the chargers being at full strength? those stats are inflated with games like cinn where merriman and phillips were both out (phillips got hurt). the chargers that NE is playing on sunday isn't the same team as those stats you're boasting. this charger team is dominating compared to that team. there's a reason why the chargers had the #1 defense towards the start of the season (pre-injuries).

Which games were they ?

Week 1 SD shut out the Raiders. Was that one of the three ? Oooooh, the Raiders.

Week 2 SD allowed 7 to the Titans who were 0-6 before Young went in - was that one ?

BTW, when we played @ Jacksonville a few weeks ago they were allowing 9 PPG at home for the season. We scored 24.

Look at who SD played at the start of the season. The Patriots are actually pretty darn healthy themselves.

Do you think the Pats have played all 16 games with all of their starters?

Seymour, Wilfork, Warren, Hobbs and Harrison have all missed multiple games due to injuries. We have put two starters on the IR Seau and Wilson. I won't even go into the backups. Get off of the injury argument it is weak.

If you care to play that game:

Junior Seau, Starting ILB : IR (during Bears game)

Rodney Harrison, Starting Safety: Missed significant time due to shoudler blade injury, will likely be out next game.

Eugene Wilson, Starting Safety: IR (missed majority of season)

Vince Wilfork, Starting NT: Missed significant time.

Ellis Hobbs, Starting CB: Missed time.

Chad Scott, CB, Missed time

Seymour, DE: Missed time

No just adding to it a bit.

Actually I kind of started this SD number crunching thing in week 12 or so. I kept hearing about how great the defense was but each week the point totals weren't jiving with the hype. I will try and find the post.

Don't worry I won't do this for every team especially if we end up playing Baltimore. :D

I wasn't planning on copyrighting it, so go ahead. You will save me the work.

the injury argument isn't weak, seeing as how the chargers are at full strength for the game on sunday. get a clue?

Excuses.. New England is never at full strength. You are what you are... As we are what we are..

as stated before, v. young played in the 2nd game of the season, against the chargers.. do some research before you post. welcome to my sig!

Sure it's weak because he was comparing it to our defensive stats and we also have had injuries which are mostly recovered from now. Sure, Seau is gone and, more than likely, Harrison. But we played 3+ games without Wilfork. He's back now but the defensive stats presented for us were without him for 3 games. And the same applies to others.
