I had originally thought that a playoff win on Saturday would go a long way to erase the playoff malaise that has stalked this team's regular season accomplishments.....but I was wrong. The local mediots, all the while proclaiming the Pats should win this game handily, have fully embraced the opinion that the Pats are a product of their schedule, and nothing they have done thus far in the season has any real meaning, and winning this game is not going to change that, rather it will actually reinforce it.

Somehow the Patriots have a different standard that applies to them. A win just doesn't do it anymore, it has to be a stylish win....and against a team with a winning record Plus anything positive that an opponent does against the Pats. is a sure sign of a fatal flaw in the very fabric of the team itself. As if a really good team would never have allowed that. Bad games by other teams are readily excused as just one of those things, yet a bad QUARTER by the Pats are symptoms of inevitable failure

Bottom Line – if the Pats manage to win the game Saturday, nothing will change. The mediots will yawn, and then gleefully tell us all the reasons why the Ravens will tear us a new rectum because they will be able to exploit all the flaws they have been pointing out to us all year. Don't forget the most important aspectof any of those parasite's job is being able to tell us “I told you so.”

…. And since I'm in a bit of a rant mode here are a few additional pet peeves that are pissing me off.

1. No one has over used the “I'm a tough guy because I play hurt card” more than Ben Rothlessberger. Not since Steve McNair have we seen it used so often. Its their convenient excuse blanket. There were times in that game where Ben was running fairly effortlessly, but if he threw a bad pass on third down, he was sure to limp off the field, making sure everyone knew he was playing in pain. I don't remember him limping in the no huddle running down after a completed pass, or when he threw a TD.

Maybe its all part of his attempt to rebuild his despicable reputation, but while I DO admire his toughness, (its not like its fake) there are a lot of other guys who are just as tough that don't feel the need to announce it to the world

2. I'm also tired of hearing about the Steelers' offensive line injuries used as a constant excuse, while all the Pats injuries on the OL have gone relatively unnoticed. Are you aware that Brian Waters was the ONLY offensive lineman who started all 16 games, Nate Solder was the only other Olman who was healthy for all 16 games.

3. Now the new cool thing the media is hyping is NOT deferring if we win the toss. The thought being its about time we got off to a fast start. That's absolutely the wrong thing to do. Its one thing for Tebow to start a playoff game at home. Its another to start the game on the road with a “juiced up” crowd trying to figure out all the defensive twists the Pats have planned. AND far better for the Pats to have the extra offensive series to start the 2nd half, after they have seen most of what Denver has to show. There are just too many advantages to deferring

4. Now some Denver thoughts

a. If Denver wins this game it WILL be an act of divine intervention. If they couldn't stop the Pats offense when they had a significant home field advantage and a 10 point lead. Its not going to happen on a short week in Foxboro

b. There are too many bad matchups. Here's one you won't see mentioned. Russ Hockstein was a hero to us in 2003, but when Steve Neal went down in the first series of the 2007 superbowl, he was the weak link that the Giants attacked to harass Brady. The Pats have a chance to return the favor. In passing situations look for the Pats to focus on him.when they attack up the middle

c.. Common wisdom says the biggest defensive threat the Broncos have are their 2 speed rushers. However the Pats have been successful all season against equally good outside rushers.. Teams that are successful in harassing Brady are the ones who can attack him up the middle, so while Dummerville and Miller will get the attention of the media, I believe it will be Ayers and Williams who will get most the attention from Dante.

Its also important to note that since he has had his hand in a cast, Miller has been a lot less effective.

d. Despite throwing for 316 yds last week, Tebow STILL only completed 50% of his passes. So in the BEST game of his career, he still proved to be largely an inaccurate passer by today's standards The key for the the Pats will be to make him throw more completions for fewer yards.

The other thing for the defense to take advantage of is not letting Tebow throw to his first read or throw in rhythm They should have an idea by now what his favorite patterns are and work to shut them down.. For example, like Sanchez, he is much more accurate and comfortable throwing slants, incuts, and play action throws down the middle. He won't be able to consistently hit open men throwing long out cuts.

The Past should also know that a very high percentage of his completed passes are thrown to his left.and force him away from that area in a couple of ways. They can rotate to his left disguising the coverage. They could overload to his right making his hot read in that direction. There are other ways as well

e. While I don't think its wise to Blitz him much, I don't want to see us rush fewer than 4 men. Control rush is fine, but 3 man rushes only open up lanes for him to run in, and I don't think a “spy” is an effective deterrent for a strong a runner as he is.

f. Its going to be cold Saturday, I will be interested to see if the red seat crowd shows up for the 2nd half.. There is a part of me that would like to see Kraft add 10,000 more seats and enclose the stadium. It would make it a much louder place.

g. Ok you have 2nd team all pro RT who has missed the last 8 games, but is fully healthy (I assume), and you have a Rookie RT who has played above the high expectations you had on him. Who starts?

The case for Volmer is his experience, and he's the better run blocker. The case for Solder, is he's been playing well and you know what to expect. Its not like Volmer just missed 2 or 3 games. Its been a while. Its not an easy one.

5. This is truly the best week to be a football fan. There are 3 other great games this weekend. All are very interesting with a lot of story lines and intriguing sub plots. Personally I think it will come down to us versus the Ravens and I will be thrilled to see us have a shot at wiping out that stain on our resume, even if it means a week of having the mediots force feed us the concept that what happened in 2009 has anything to do with the 2 teams that will meet for the AFCCG.

6. In the NFC the options seem much less clear. However I do not want to play the Saints in a dome, and if I were the Niners, the sprinklers on my field would never be off this week and the grass never cut. Playing the Giants would seem like ideal opponent of destiny, but in the end it will probably end up being the Packers, which would right a wrong that some of us older fans remember.

7. Among the tweaks to the CBA they might put in. I'd like to see them allow the player reps to vote on a team by team basis to allow 5-10 more padded practices per season. The coaches can only request, and the team has to vote to allow it by a secret ballot so there can be no retribution. I don't think that would be overly burdensome.

I still prefer to call you Pats Fanken, Ken...don't know why....I just really enjoy reading anything you post though....

This is one of those games where it's hard to use the 1st game as a gauge.

You can say that even w/ a 10 point lead, they couldn't stop the Pats offense. But they did genuinely unravel w/ the turnovers, which changed the whole course of that game.

Will they turn the ball over again, in that kind of rapid succession? Possibly. But I also think the Denver O will move with almost as much will against the Pats D as the Pats O will move against theirs. It's a game that could come down to turnovers, just like the 1st one did. But the Pats have to hope that they end up on the positive side of that.

Good stuff Ken.

You mention the Denver pass rushers as potentially posing a threat, and obviously I agree. I think it will also be interesting to see how they choose to cover our offense, as they did effectively shut down Welker and Gronkowski. I would certainly count their CB's as a possible threat too.

As another poster mentions, "divine intervention" may not necessarily be the case, as the first game was dictated by the Broncos shooting themselves in the foot. I think it will depend on whether or not NE can force them to make those same mistakes.

I would also add that I would like to see NE make Tebow act as more of a typical pocket passer at times, as it seems as though that is his main weakness. We know he can hit the longer passes, but I don't feel as though he can hit the shallow/intermediate routes with as much consistency.

Sounds like you listened to Felger and Mazz with Perillo today, I came away with the same thoughts regarding the mediots.
Good stuff

Comes back to maintaining gap integrity doesn't it ken? Jays nailed it in one. Gap integrity and ensure the backfield is clogged with DB's covering their assignments.

The Patriots are a considerably better team than the Broncos. They should win this easily, but strange things happen in January.

I think some of the mediot stuff will surely die down with a win on Saturday, and another season with a spot in the AFC Championship game.

That's when they will 'prove' themselves to those who still feel apprehension and doubt...and with 3 straight playoff losses in a row, I don't blame them as much as some. I think it's only natural on some level to have questions.

However, many of them are indeed, nothing more than blowhards..

A trip to the AFCCG after 2 consecutive seasons as the AFC's #1 seed will surely quiet some of these "know it all" experts up. And if not, then so what? When has it ever mattered before?

With close games against some of the lower tiered competition, and a propensity to allow the teams opposing QB to move up and down the field at will, can you really blame them for not drinking the kool-aid with the same intensity as some of us?

Win in the postseason and you gain more respect, it may be as simple as that. Unfortunately, that has not happened in the past 4 yrs, so it causes some of these idiots short-term memory loss..

A pats win saturday would be psychologically significant both for the team and the fans (some fans) As far as not playing anybody, maybe they didn't but once you get on a roll i think you gain confidence that can carry over.

well if the pats handle there running attack its game over.. Tebow won't beat you over the top.

Tell it to Pittsburgh
If there is one thing I am certain of this weekend Deus, it's that the Patriots will not play the same defensive scheme as the Steelers did.

That may be, but that's a different point than the blanket statement made by deroc5050.

The Broncos still went for 131 from 34 rushes at 3.9. I'm not sure I'd consider that handling the Broncos rushing game.

Denver played well against the Steelers. They deserved their win despite the stupid scheme the Steelers employed. I can't say I was upset with the result.

Your right about having to win big or in stylish fashion. That media really isn't paying attention to detail with this team. Was listening to Mike and Mike yesterday and little Mike says "The Patriots are counting their blessings that they don't have to face Pittsbugh as they have owned them in the past." I'm like really? They've beat us twice in 11 years with Brady at the QB and one time with Cassel who turned it over 5 times.

And in the current era, the Steelers last 3 SB appearances have been lucky enough to avoid the NE Patriots...

2005---Denver beat us, so they escaped that yr
2008---Only one of two teams that went 11-5 not to make it
2010---The NYJ handled their dirty work, setting up a much easier AFCCG

I do not find this to be coincidental at all.

No, I find my blood pressure stays lower if I avoid listening to those 2 bozos. Actually Felger bothers me less than Mazzarotti. I know his rant is purely for entertainment purposes only. But Mazz (who makes ashamed to also be a Tufts grad) should be slapped for his his many uninformed judgments and pronouncements about football. Given that Mazz has only known that they play 11 on a side for about a year, and wouldn't know hip pads from shoulder pads, I take offense that he pontificates as if he actually knows something.or has something important to say. Usually he just parrots the Borges/Shaunnessy line or the latest contrarian position that makes him sound important. He knows NOTHING about football and should stop telling others what they should think.

I think you have judge how you rate the run defense a bit different with the Broncos than you do with other teams. Whereas holding a team to around 100 yds rushing for a game is considered a decent job, holding the Broncos to under 150 would be doing a decent job.

The Broncos run the ball much more than other teams so their rush totals would naturally be a lot higher.

BTW- The Bronco's had a great game plan ready for Pittsburgh and outplayed them on both sides of the ball for most of the game. Pittsburgh was very lucky to get the game to OT. They got some very lucky calls which kept them in the game. The Steelers clearly came into this game reading their press clippings and as usual never adjusted to what Denver was doing.

I read where Pittsburgh gave up 2 passing plays of 40+ yards all season, yet gave up FOUR in this game to the worse passing offense in the league. Go figure.

Iam worried they might employ the game plan the fins had in the 2nd game. double gronk and hernandez, beat up welker and blitz relentlessly. Thankfully moore missed out a few throws and the pats made a comeback somehow but i deficit early in the playoffs will have the same doubts creeping back in ...

**** Lebeau is not getting enough heat for his game plan. If this was BB, mediots wouldve been all over it....

I think Tebow is going to have a lot harder time moving on us this time around, than he did last time. I think the big thing to realize about this offense is that the reason it's successful is because it's different than anything people regularly prepare for. The more you see it, the better you become at defending it. I also think that in the extra week off, BB probably took a look at this team the most. The Steelers are a team we are familiar with, and the Bengals didn't bring anything to new to the table in terms of offensive attack. We also got healthy on defense getting Chung and Spikes back, while Denver will most likely lose Decker.

In terms of defense, I pray Dawkins does not play against us, which he shouldn't. Although it may appear that the last time we met, the broncos shut gronk and welker down, I think it may have been Bill's game plan to set up Hernandez with more opportunities. Gronk was just coming off his big week against the Redskins and it made a lot of people take note of him. Let them think they are taking our star out of the game and then beat them with our other star TE. I see us spreading the love this time around. Not to mention this time we will have Branch back, a healthy BJGE, and a more experienced Ridley.

This week should really favor us considering the Broncos are not only having to do a quick turn around from that big win over the steelers, but have a shortened week to recover and prepare for this game. All the pats need to do is go out and execute.
