BB retiring after this season?

Look, let me first say that this is unlikely. But the guys on PFW in Progress raised this, and I was...intrigued.

Possible hints:

1. McDaniels is back. He's a perfect HC-in-waiting.
2. Caserio not leaving. If he has a chance to be Indy's GM, what would make him stay other than being promised our GM position?
3. Troy Brown doesn't think he has much longer. (Interview on WEEI today)
4. For what it's worth, this is the crankiest season i've ever seen BB being.

It's really unlikely, but...thoughts?
(And if you don't think he retires, how many years does he have left? I remember him saying he doesn't want to be one of those guys who coaches to 70.)

Nah. If there is one thing I think we know about BB, it's that he never puts people in a job they can't handle yet. I would guess he goes out with Brady in 3 or 4 years (which will be a very sad day in my house). I've actually become a little afraid of the Pats winning another ring as that might be a time for both BB and TFB to hang em up - after all, what's left then? I don't think it will be this season though.

I don't think he's been cranky this season. He's been very complimentary of his players after wins, even when most people here want to run the defense out of town.

Pioli stayed for years after he'd become a hot GM commodity, so the Caserio thing isn't something I'm reading into.

Didn't you miss it? Belichick said in press conference today that if the Patriots make it to the Super Bowl, he plans to spend the two weeks prior to the game negotiating with the Dolphins behind Kraft's back to become the Head Coach, GM< and President.

I predicted (only half-joking) a couple of years back that Belichick would retire after this year and Gruden would take his place. Belichick turns 60 in April and Gruden has refused to pursue a multitude of jobs for the last couple of years...almost like he has his eyes on a particular job. Stranger things have happened.

nope, for BB this team is not just a job, when he leaves, he will leave it with a successor waiting in the wings, in ALL possible spots

at first i used to think he would retire W/ brady, no WAY he leaves while still having brady as a QB

now i think he may go a couple of years longer than Brady, so that he can cultivate the new QB, then he will go


either way, it wont be a surprise, the evidence will be there

Did you happen to think that Belichick got McDaniels on board quickly because he needed a new OC and knew that several teams,including TB,Jax,Miami and yes even the Jets at OC was going to go hard after Josh when he was finally freed from the Rams?

It has NOTHING to do with Bill wanting to retire......I assure you.


And,oh....one other thing,Belichick NEVER gives hints to ANYTHING he is doing if you have been following this team for the past 10 years.

Sorry for the attack, but it is silly discussion.

Belichick was raised to be a football coach. His father coached until he was 70. I would expect Belichick to coach a similar length of time.

Belichick is a student of NFL history and will most likely chase the record for most Super Bowl wins by head coach. He is one behind Chuck Noll. If the Pats do win this year, there is no way he retires with a shot to have the record by himself and also tie Shula for the most Super Bowl appearances as a head coach. If the Pats don't win, he will still be close enough to chase the record.

If Belichick felt this was his last season, he wouldn't have traded for several high draft picks next year. He would have tried to load up for this year.

The guy still appears to enjoy the game and has never mentioned retirement. I figure a few more 2009 years with the internal issues on that team and it might wear on him, but he seems to like this team.

There may come a time when he wants to call it a day, but I believe he still wants to rename his boat a few more times.

I think it's more likely that Tom Brady retires before BB leaves the game.

I expect Brady to retire around 38,especially if he wins another SB or two...with Belichick I expect at least 5 more years.

If Bill wanted to ease up all he has to do is hire more staff ... if memory serves me right we have one of the smallest coaching staffs in the league. A bit more coaching delegation by Bill would be like a retirement for others.

Not only is BB not retiring after this season but I also think the conventional wisdom that has him exiting the scene when Tom Brady does is complete nonsense. BB has a great gig here, loves to coach, loves living in NE and he loves a challenge.
He and TB have a least one more (I think they'll get 2) championship to win and the thought of/challenge in rebuilding the Patriots post-Brady is very appealing to a guy like BB.
What exactly would a lifelong football junkie like BB do in retirement anyway?

For years we've been complaining that BB's core staff is ever less experienced, with opinions ranging from "That's a bad mistake" to "It's unavoidable when you're so successful and everybody wants to hire your guys" (my own opinions is toward the latter end of the spectrum).

A slight reversal in that trend proves ... nothing.
