OT: Bama-LSU game really showed how Goodell has changed the NFL

I think the one thing that really jumped out at me watching the National Championship game last night was the hitting.

I had not realized how different the NFL used to be till seeing that game. I mean you talk about it, but it wasn't untill seeing that hitting that it really reminded me how different the NFL used to be.

There were a bunch of times last night that DB's and linebackers put hits on offensive players that would have been perfectly legal before Goodell's time, but that would have drawn a penalty today.

Think about the Steelers Broncos game, the game tying TD. In the old NFL, Cotchery would have been leveled. Instead the DB pulled back.

Those Bama and LSU defenders are going to have to learn how not to hit if they are going to do well in Goodell's NFL.

I think the guy has just been bad for the sport.

It really has not done justice either when you think of the records that have fallen. They need to really be put in perspective.

Records that have fallen during Goodell's time should be looked at differently IMO

Unfortunately, the NFL is a fat target for the litigation industry. They have little choice but to go out of their way to minimize injuries.

For the same reason, I expect college ball to follow the NFL lead.

I agree.

College already has the hits to the head penalties and I expect they will add more "saftey hitting rules" as time goes by.

I'll tell you one thing noticed is how much more violent the kick return hits are. I miss that in the NFL.

I'm done crying now. Alabama was clearly the better team last night. Their kicker was the MVP. I don't know if it was from the layoff. But LSU seemed nervous from from the start. Les Miles had a horrible gamplan. I'm like stop trying to run the damn ball on that Defense. He should've put Lee in there. Which is why the BCS system sucks. It will continue on sucking until there's a playoff. LMAO! I got all off the subject.

I didn't see the game, but heard from everyone down here in DC and on national radio that it was barely watchable.

Compare that to the drama of the Broncos-Steelers game or that of 90% of the NFL games.

The NFL is sooooooo much better to watch than college football.

Would be interesting to see what the National Championship Game tv ratings were.

Goodell is a God to his employers. This may make you spin in hatred, but it is what it is.

But at the same time, that game was just terrible, terrible football. LSU's offense was disgusting. Just no QB to speak of whatsoever.

Had the potential to be a "classic" if it had those defenses but also pitted two elite-level college QB's, and sadly, neither were even among the best in the SEC let alone the nation.

I appreciate good defense, but after last night I can't decide if Alabama is a great D or LSU is just one of the worst offenses in college ball. I guess they had another QB on the sidelines they could have used and gone to a passing game if not for his 1-7 TD/INT ratio.

I can't watch college ball because the talent is so thin and the schemes are so skewed to take advantage of that. It's no wonder the translation at the next level is such a crap shoot.

THe LSU QB was clearly nervous even by way of simple ball handling. Unfortunately, that didn't go away. I didn't catch it; what was LSU's total yardage?

LSU has had a shaky offense all year long, the only reason they won the first game is Bama missed four field goals including one in OT.

Jefferson was terrible, but Lee the cough, back-up who started when Jefferson was suspended was usually much better. I don't know why he didn't see the field last night. I thought the Bama had a great game plan, they knew they couldn't run against LSU so they didn't.

About the only thing that Jefferson did do in the game was pull a Lawrence Taylor and break that Bama LB's who intercepted him, leg in two and the stupid announcers didn't even realize how bad of an injury it was until after the commerical.

The fact that Ridley put up the numbers he did in 2010 are even more impressive considering that he put them up with that stiff at QB.

It's mind boggling why Les Miles didn't insert Jarrett Lee into that game last night. I'm aware of his career numbers against Alabama (1 TD to 7 INT's, I believe), but it was apparent that Alabama prepped for Jordan Jefferson and he wasn't going to get anything going. Hell, he was hanging his head in shame in the second quarter. I would have put Jefferson in to start the third then pulled him for Lee if he didn't get anything going. It wasn't as if LSU had anything to lose at that point.

Some of the hits yesterday were results of bad throws. I think the NFL has better QBs that know how to protect their receivers a little bit better. I'm not saying that that's the only reason why there are less brutal hits compared to college. Also, the receivers in the NFL know how to protect themselves better too.
