re: DraftTek 1/5 mock and 1/9 mock (5 rounds) - Jared Crick & Peter Konz

How do I vote "fail" for both of them? I don't like Crick all that much and although I like Konz and he's probably going in the 1st, I just can't justify taking any Center in the 1st. Especially not with Dante as OL coach.

He turned a 5th rounder into an outstanding OC (earlier in Koppen's career). And turned several UDFAs into solid starters in Koppen's absence.

Plus, Curry at 2B? I'll be surprised if he makes it to our 1A pick.

I really like Crick, but more mid-2nd than late 1st.

What exactly about Jeff Fuller says "Patriot" to anyone?

I like them both but i prefer B. I am intrigued by shea and jayron plays very aggressive and is basically what I had wanted to see out of darius butler. Dwight jones looks like a big play receiver and fuller looks like a great possession wr. I like both receivers but I think fuller would be safer. Also, fuller's blocking would help immensely with our bubble screens. I would be satisfied with either one the more I think about it even though konz in the first might seem to be a reach.

The first one is really good. I Like Curry in the second. I think Curry has that nonstop motor that will translate well into the NFL, provided he stays healthy.

Really hard to see BB taking Crick in the first since Crick was injured most of the year. Replace him with Cox and I am on board.

2nd day WR that Brady doesn't want to throw to and won't see the end of his rookie contract, effectively ending his NFL career as no other team will touch him.

Is the problem with Brady or the WR?

Seems Brady has taken to the new TE's very quickly. Why not the WR's?

I don't like Curry. I think he's the epitome of why we don't like to gamble on OLBs. Remember those other "all motor" guys Brandon Graham and Sergio Kindle? I hardly remember them. If you're going to take a shot on an OLB I like it to be one from a school that faces a tough schedule. I'd like an OLB from a deep south smaller school in the SEC.

I like Crick as more of a 2nd rounder now. Martin and Konz are good picks. Martin for need, Konz for best player available.

Well, Wikipedia explains what happened to Kindle:

On July 25, Kindle fell down two flights of stairs at a home in Austin, Texas. He was sent to the hospital in stable condition but was described as suffering head trauma. It was later determined he fractured his skull in the fall. As a result, Kindle was unable to attend the Ravens' training camp at McDaniel College.[14]

On September 23, 2010, Kindle signed a one-year contract for $320,000, the rookie minimum, and was immediately placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list.[15] Because Kindle did not sign until Week 3 of the 2010 season, Kindle received a prorated salary of $282,000. The contract included no signing bonus (by comparison, New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, the player drafted just before Kindle, received a signing bonus of $1.76 million).[16]

18 months after been drafted, Kindle was named active for the first time in his career for the week 4 game against the New York Jets. He was primarily on special teams, but saw some time on defense towards the end of the game.[17]

re: DraftTek 1/5 mock and 1/9 mock (5 rounds) - Jared Crick & Peter Konz

I know the Kindle story and based on character stories I've read about him I'm sure there's a lot more to his fall down the stairs than just an accident. I guess the point I'm trying to make is all-motor guys don't always project well at the next level. They are also usually one injury away from being useless. I'd rather have the smart, technical pass rusher.

Is the problem with Brady or the WR?

Seems Brady has taken to the new TE's very quickly. Why not the WR's?

Honestly, I've come to the conclusion that it is the scouts/FO. QBs need receivers that fit their ability to read defenses and make decisions. For example, PManning identifies open areas and needs receivers (frisbee dogs) that can get to those areas on time, every time. Otherwise, his passes are hitting grass. Brady is different in that he identifies matchups and throws to where receivers (chess pieces) are programmed to move based on that matchup. If they don't, Brady doesn't pull the trigger (and probably gets hammered in the pocket). Likely a similar story for the other top QBs.

Belichick and co. just aren't finding the right guys. They have skills, smarts and effort, but not the eyes and instincts. So instead of evaluating measurables and the ability to get open, they need to find receivers that can process information quickly and make the right decisions every time. 4.3 or 4.7 speed, 6'4" or 5'10" height, whatever. I don't know how to evaluate this skill set in college guys (and doesn't seem like the Pats do either) but that is the challenge.

As for the TEs, that just adds to their impressive story. Not only are they a physical mismatch but they have an amazing ability to read and react to defenses despite barely being able to legally drink. Find those same brains in a WR with elite skills and if the RBs emerge as expected, teams will have to come up with some kind of magical gameplan to keep the Pats out of the 30's.

My current guess is Dwight Jones from UNC but take that with a huge grain of salt for the very reasons mentioned above. Still have hope that Ocho will emerge as a complementary piece and maybe there is a Welker-like FA this offseason. Anyone have a better guess?
