OT: Philbin's son's body found

Struggling to feel bad for a guy who raped two girls dying or the family who discarded his used condoms after the fact. I suppose that makes me vindictive or something but I get a little irrational about rape.

Wait what? Source?

I will say a prayer for that family tonight....

Context: Son of Packers coach Philbin gets 6 months in jail - JSOnline

Summary: 18 year old guy gets 6 months in jail for having nonconsensual sex with two girls at a party where drinking was prominently involved. Judge decides not to have Philbin listed as a sex offender. Given that I don't know the guy and that I don't know what happened, I'm not going to pass judgment. I'll just express my sympathy to the Philbin family, as I'm sure that it's never easy to lose your 21 year-old son.

Good news, you don't have to. He's a rapist. Well, was.

It seems to me that what likely happened is he had sex with girls who had been passed out (or otherwise highly intoxicated) at a party. Reasonable people can disagree as to the punishment he should receive and how much the girls should be responsible for their own behavior. He's hardly the first teenage male to do such a thing and while I believe he deserved some punishment, I'm not ready to call him the scum of humanity and celebrate his death quite as much as you are.

Heh, I'm the unreasonable one for not being cool with the weepy sentiments spent on a rapist.

Gosh, I didn't realize that he wasn't the first teen male to rape a couple of drunk chicks at a party, I'm just so naive! It's just pure luck I didn't rape the **** out of a bunch of women too, I guess. I mean, if but for the grace of God, right?

Why are you so angry? I think he deserved to be punished and it seems to me he was punished. But unlike you, I'm not so comfortable making him out to be the slime of all the world and gleefully enjoy the fact that he died in an accident a couple days ago.

having sex with a girl whose passed out is considered non-consensual sex and falls under the category of rape.

I dunno, I guess I have this personality flaw where people defending a rapist by trying to go 'aw shucks boys will be boys' or getting all sad over his death pushes my buttons. I'm trying to work on it!

Spare me the hyperbole, I'm not gleefully enjoying or celebrating anything and never did in this thread. I am guilty of not being happy reading people sending out best wishes and prayers for a rapist.

I'm with you. I see no reason for anyone to be righteous about this kid dying by accident regardless of the crimes he committed (and paid for) as a drunken teenager three years ago. Let's not lose sight of why this thread exists: a family tragedy involving a coach of a potentially Super Bowl-bound NFL team. It's not about the deceased as much as the tragedy affecting his family and by extension, the Packers.

This... He didnt deserve to die because he was drunk horny and being a stupid kid.(giving him the benefit of a doubt) A terrible chain of events.. Poor family.

I agree 100%. And he did some time for what he did and he deserved to do that time in jail.

But that doesn't mean he deserved to die and we should all be happy that he fell through the ice and drowned.

Who is saying he deserved to die?

Read the thread again, not just the things you're making up in your head. My issue is with people defaulting to feeling sympathetic to the guy. I feel like there is a double-standard because I highly doubt we'd see the same outpouring if it was Michael Vick yet he did his time.

People trying to handwave away rape as 'Not a Big Deal' or trying to say the drunk girls were somehow complicit in their rapes is where I become indignant.

Here's a little life rule I have: If you rape someone I'm not going to feel sympathetic towards you. If your family tries to help you cover up the rape by getting rid of the condoms you used in your rape I'm not going to feel sympathetic towards them when you die either.

I guess that makes me a freak on this board.

Good news, you don't have to. He's a rapist. Well, was.

There is legal precedent stating that drunk people are unable to consent. Basically, if you've had sex with a drunk person (even if you were also drunk), you've committed rape by the strict legal definition. As a result, I tend to seek a little more clarification re: what actually happened before demonizing someone.

If they were passed out at the time, then of course that's despicable. If he was just as drunk as they were, OTOH, then that would be a case where I happen to disagree with the legal precedent. As I said before, I don't know exactly what happened. Neither do you. The light sentence that he received, and the fact that the judge left open the opportunity to have his record expunged, would seem to indicate that he was not deemed to be a menace to society. In other words, that his indiscretion was likely more of the "drunken mistake with some gray area" variety... but again, none of us know.

And FWIW, my reaction would be exactly the same if it was Michael Vick who died. It would be a shame, and I'd wish his family the best. It's tragic when people die young, even if they've made bad decisions along the way, and especially if they've tried to turn their lives around.
