All season long, not just yesterday the patriots have not blitzed. If the pats blitzed 20 times all season i would be suprised. They are not going to get away with not getting to the QB in Sandiego. PERIOD. The way that Chad and company moved the ball against us this past week, practically ever time they had the ball, we will not last even the half against the Chargers. The score doesn't reflect how close this game really was against the Jets yesterday. Two key plays by our defense was the difference, the latteral, and the Samuel INT. Everybody is so worried about Sandiegos run game. Yes, we should be, but LT is more dangerous coming out of the back field and running a route more than anything. This guy led his team in receptions this year. If we come with more pressure he will be forced to stay in and block to protect his QB. Philip Rivers is no push over either, his wide outs are over looked because of the talent in Gates and LT. The wideouts can win games too. The Chargers won there last two games without LT scoring a TD, so getting to Rivers is a must. Im expecting to see at least some blitzing from the pats this week, i think its crucial in whether we win the game or not.

yeah, because what they've been doing hasn't been working

you know those plays where tomlinson breaks through the initial line and he runs 50 yards for a score. most of those are probably blitzes. throwing guys at the quarterback doesn't work so well when the ball is being run upfield.

Yeah your right the blitz does have its down falls. I just think we defenitley have to do a better job at getting to the QB, and if its taking a chance by blitzing here and there, i think it might be worth it.

The Pats had 44 sacks in the regular season, fifth highest in the NFL. They were fourth in interceptions. Both rankings suggest that the Pats got "adequate" pressure on opposing QBs.

Gee we play a read and react defense. That means the pass rush is secondary to stopping the run. AND we only compiled ... a VERY Poor, MEDIOCRE, 47 SACKS this season.

How can you possibly play any defense with such a poor pass rush?

Geez guys, Get a Clue...;)

Actually that doesnt happen as often as you think. Let me explain how it happens.

Our Oline is one of the best in the league. How Lt gets off those big runs with our without a loaded box is this. The oline blocks all of the lineman and creates a hole to run through where the DL never lays a finger on LT.

Ok on to the Next level of the defense the Linebackers. Now here a couple things usually happen. Lorenzo Neal meets a LB head on taking the MLB out in a 4-3 and then LT will juke/run over/stiff arm the the remaining safety and he is off to the races against a corner the receiver on that side was blocking or the extra lb in a 3-4. Now since you use a 3-4 it does give you a better chance to stop LT IMHO. Expect the Chargers to PULL the guard so that a Guard is coming to take out your extra LB. Neal will be blocking the LB that is covering LT and then it is LT and the safety 1 on 1 whether the box is loaded or not. The only difference with the box being loaded is that Lt has to face the safety sooner. BUT if you load the box then we can play action to gates or audible and hit one of the receivers deep or across the middle. This is why you hear things like pick your poison with the Chargers. A healthy Chargers team can not be stopped.

Wow, that's an impressive mastery of the game of football. And here I was thinking broads didn't know anything about the game.

You are an idiot. Plain and simple.

They may have 61 sacks compared to 47 but but they have given up a lot more points then New England. So sacks really Don't mean much.

You are still playing a rookie at offensive Left Tackle and your RT is not a star. Neal is used to having a 20-30 lb advantage over the LBs that he clears out. Like the Denver guys. The Pats play 250-260 # guys at LB that he can't just bulldoze. they often take on Guards an FB even a good one like Neal is much easier to face. The best part of your O line is your interior linemen, but their aren't that many all pros there either. As for pulling guards, if I recall you choose fat, big, guys with power, rather than Guards who can pull. No little 260 lb Ends or 280 pound tackles for you to overpower.

Perfect match up for the Pats DL that all play at 300 lbs plus.

Your dominant running game comes from the abilty or LT, Lorenzo Neal and adequate O linemen. Period. End of Story. Period ! It is not an overpowering line like KC used to have. No way, no how.

It should be a good game.

Hmm. Ok. First off, SD is 14-2. Their OL is just as good as ours. Their "rookie LT" by all accounts isn't the second coming but has been widely lauded as a man beyond his years, football-wise. (Remember Mankins was a rook last year, too.) We also have no all-pros on OL, except this fact is more readily apparent here in NE than in sunny SD. Folks who have watched the entire NFL this year would know this. ChargeHer was simply giving us some info on his view of his team, which he has watched 16 times this year. Like we talk about the Pats.

Off the soapbox, I now have a bit of a hare-brained scheme I am curious if is feasible. OK, remember the INDY AFC Champ. game, (before the new rules) where we man-handled the receivers as a strategy? Now, combine that with the college style "spy" system. Fttdk, it is a modified man-on-man system designed and used to stop the "superstar" player on teams that lack overall skill or talent (think M. Faulk at SDSt).

Within 5 yards of scrimmage, LT is fair game. Abuse him and do not allow him to release, a la the Indy game, using a modified spy system. Rivers will be a good one, but at this stage he is merely a mechanic, not an engineer. He is not able to adapt and control with regularity.

Yes, the Chargers have given up more points than us, thats because they can score a lot of points and win in a shoot out game. Thats why i think our pass rush defense is important in this game, we need to slow down there offense, force them to make mistakes, make them think. If this game ends up in a shoot out, i dont think we will beable to pull it off.

In one word...............AGREED.

Now, for more words. More often than not, when we go soft on defense, and apply no pressure, show no stunts, or do not blitz a safety, opposing quarterbacks, for the most part, have had a field day.

Fortunately, our defense tightens up as they get closer to the goal line, but that may be, oinpart, because it is a shorter field and the DB's dont have to worry about a lot of turf behind them.

With the SD offense, this would be a very bad mistake.

I believe that safety bl.itzes, or some great stunting (Colvin had one yesterday that was utterly fantastic, as he delayed his blitz, and then went at it inside the offensive tackle who was being forced to the outside.... Colvin hit the lane and nailed Noodle Arm, albeit a second late, but it forced the play to be incomplete.)

Stunting and a safety blitz can be worked and not give up too much in the way of weakening our run defense....

Your right, i remember that play(colvin). It was good play. We cant let Rivers get comfortable, or he will have a field day. I would like to see more from Colvin and the rest of LB's in this up coming game. Yes our red zone defense has played well, and has kept us in games.

You speak sense my friend. This is a balanced team. Cameron and Wade complement each other in that regard. When the offense struggles the D takes over, vice versa.

This is the PO and the team that doesn't show fire and intensity goes home fishing.

I expect the Pats to show their SB caliber swagger and for San Diego to match that with it's own brand of confidence.

Why do we have to have such a simplistic view on what obviously takes BB/Pees et al alot of time to game plan?

Its really as simple as blitzing more is it?

How did that work out for the Jets yesterday?

Maybe its just not exciting enough for some people.

Teams drive the ball on New England at times, teams in he playoffs are even more likely to do so but its not giving up the big play that counts.

Because that allows one of the best red-zone D's in the NFL to do its thing.

You obviously have no grasp of Patriot football. The essence of BB football is to keep the game close. Force teams to take underneath routes and mix up coverage. 99% of the time they never leave a corner on single coverage, there is always a safety back to help and never let anyone behind the defense.

Didn't you see the Faulk td where the JEts gambled with the blitz hoping he would block and he released and was wide open.... do you want LT going for 80 yards?

The defense is predicated on the d-line(front 3 rushing) and TBC was a fourth rusher most of the time.

If you mean blitz by sending 5 players then i can see that, but sending 6 I see them only do that 2-3 times the whole game if that.

Keep an eye on that during the game.

The safety guesses wrong and hits the wrong hole LT will be gone. He has awesome vision and quick lateral movement. I would not gamble with a safety MR PLAYACTION MAN.

TBC and Colvin rush about the same - it all depends on formation and coverage assignments. Vrabel and Bruschi are more often in coverage, but Vrabes gave Penny a nice shot coming unblocked on a blitz up the middle yesterday.

Wow, that was a nice story. Except for one thing. Your vaunted offensive line is going up against the best front 3 in football. You pull a guard and Wilfork will be taking the handoff from Rivers, not LT. You dont double up on him and you wont even have a hole to look at. Oh, then you have Big Sey and Warren. My concern with your run game is the ability of our OLB's to set the edge correctly.
My concern with your passing game is tight end coverage.
That is the end of my concerns with your offense.

Biggles nailed it, blitzing is sexy but the Patriots do not blitz very often. It is going to take the full effort of the front 7 and maybe a safety to contain LT. Blitzing creates gaps and I don't think they will risk a 80 yard touchdown. The goal will be to create 3rd and 5+ so they can create looks to confuse the QB. In 3rd and long there may be some blitzing but don't count on it being a staple of the gameplan.

Also this will be a 60 minute game, blitzing is tiring. Teams that blitz a lot tend to tire in the 4th quarter. Base 3-4 with some safety help, bend but don't break and hold them to FGs. And tell me if you have heard this, play a team game, offense, defense and special teams. All phases helping each other.
