According to this report (rumor), it looks like the Manning era in Indy may be over. First, the Polians were given their walking papers. Now . . . this . . .

Indianapolis Colts to draft Andrew Luck of Stanford Cardinal with No. 1 pick, sources say - ESPN

I sure hope the Jets don't get Manning, as it's been rumored in recent weeks that they'd be highly interested. That's all we need in the AFC East. Their loudmouthed coach, a pretty solid defense, and arguably the second best QB of the last decade would be too much to bear for me. I'll be watching very closely.

You've got it all wrong. We want him to go to the Jets. The Jets fail.
How much more fun will it be to watch them fail with Manning, and how many years will overpaying for an aging injured QB set them back?
It seems they are ready to end the Sanchez fun, so this would be a nice transition to the next Era of Misery. (see Favre, Brett)

Dont worry about it, not only will they groom Luck for a couple years like the Packers did with Rodgers, even if the Colts were to trade Manning, he wouldn't go to New York - it's an outdoor stadium in the northeast. The weather is too unpredictable.

Agreed..It's all about the numbers with Manning...and he wouldn't be as effective playing almost all his games outdoors, especially in the winter in NY...

Peyton Manning on the Jets is a pipe dream of Jets fans, nothing more. Why would the Colts not hold on to Manning and let him groom Luck?

Besides, why would Manning even WANT to go to NY, except maybe to reunite with Tom Moore (if I recall correctly, he is a consultant there). Not that the team he goes to is his call, but I would imagine Irsay would try and look out for him and send him somewhere he'd like to go.

...now Miami is a different story....

Not to mention even in NY there is enough room for both Cryin Ryan and Mr 9-10 in the postseason as attention whores.

We're getting stronger as well. I'd rather hate/beat a decent Jet team than a garbage one.

As long as the Jets mortgage themselves into a team that has no depth/youth, I'm all for it.

It doesn't have to be a dome for Manning to play elsewhere

I could see him in Oakland,Arizona,Seattle or any West Coast team.......or south for that matter.

I do have EXTREMELY strong beliefs that Andrew Luck who is the biggest QB name out of College since....well Manning...is not going to be sitting for two or three years holding a clipboard and not start until he is 26 or so...that to me is beyond ridiculous.

IMO a few things will happen with the #1 pick
A) Indy drafts Luck and Manning either Retires or goes to another team
B) Indy drafts another top prospect and let's Luck slide to 2
C) Indy trades the #1 slot to a team in dire need for a QB and in return gets a boatload of draft picks for it,possibly getting 3 or more high round picks in the next few years (my likely scenario)

You may want to check out this latest bit of info before jumping to these conclusions, although I hardly blame you for doing so ;)

Colts and Manning may both be open to pushing back option bonus | ProFootballTalk

It definitely seems as though Indy is going to keep Manning, not just for the next few yrs b/c he's one of the best, but also to groom Luck.

Remember that Luck in the NCAA is different from Luck in the NFL. Keeping Manning is obviously the right move, unless his health somehow doesn't allow him to come back.

The Manning era in Indy is apparently over but writing him off is crazy, and hoping he goes to the jets certifiably insane. I hope he goes west to the 49ers.

The Colts own the 1st pick overall and could get Manning the best OT in the draft to protect him, the top WR as a big target and weapon for him, or the best RB in the draft to give him offensive balance to work with, and if they choose Luck hoping Manning will mentor him then i don't blame Manning one bit for demanding a trade. They are making it clear Manning isn't their future and he shouldn't have to literally stick his neck out for them given their lack of commitment to him.

BTW-Wasn't this the kind of nightmare scenario the douche Borges and a few others were depicting during the Brady negotiations? And i'm pretty sure he took it even a little further and said such a thing could never happen with the Colts because they are just too well run......................

I don't know. I wouldn't think that no matter how "good" Luck may be, that he'll be better than Peyton Manning.

At least not in his first year or two in the league.

We've seen "the best prospect ever" come out of college before, with everyone stating how he'll immediately be the next coming of Joe Montana.

The NFL is complicated, and fast..

Keeping Manning, which would still give you the best chance to win AND have him grooming Luck in the process for the future would be their best choice.

Especially with a rookie salary cap.

It's at least an option that they'll think long and hard about, depending upon Manning's health. FWIW--it appears as though Manning (and the Colts front office) realizes that it's probably best to push back Manning's salary bonus. To me that certainly means something.

One more time...

The Colts cannot trade Manning. Unless they pick up his option before March 5th he becomes a UFA. Players cannot be traded unless they are under contract and until March 13th, the first day of FA...

If the Colts pick up the $28M option, they cannot trade him for at least a couple of years because of $38M in dead cap... Manning and his agent Tom Condon made sure that Peyton either plays for the Colts in 2012 or he retires because he cannot play at all or he is a UFA and he is free to go wherever he chooses. He won't choose the dysfunctional JETS or any team in the same division that is home to Belichick and Brady...

Manning to the JETS is indeed the wet dream of delusional JETSfans and equally delusional NY/NJ mediots who think their market is the ultimate goal of any athlete, even if their teams aren't... Manning already makes as much off the field as on it, he's a national advertisers ICON and he isn't going to screw up his legacy over a few bucks. If the Colts cut him before the option is due and it turns out he can play, he will look for the conference/division path of least resistance for Peyton Williams Manning...

FWIW I don't know where you're getting that from because it makes absolutely no sense for Manning to push back his option date to benefit a team determined to draft his replacement... That option is his leverage. If he pushes it back he screws up his own potential FA, which players just don't do, and if he did it would likely be in exchange for a no trade provision. If he's healthy he wants to play, and he wants to choose where he plays unless its for Indy and he will want to figure out where that is for him ASAP since he would be teaching somebody's offense a new scheme or figuring out a way to blend his with theirs.

Exactly. Just can't see Peyton Manning choosing to play for Rex Ryan, or with Santonio Holmes, etc. As much as Pats fans have "hate" for Manning as a rival, there's a lot of respect too, and for reason. I just don't see Manning running away to join the circus

Irsay seems dead-set on taking Luck. It makes me wonder if there was a divide on the issue between him and Polian which led to the somewhat surprising firing.

I wonder if Bill was pushing for immediate help to maximize Peyton's championship window, while Irsay was pushing for the future. Polian's legacy may have looked better if Manning had won one or two more Super Bowls.

I, for one, truly believe that the Colts will go after Luck. I really don't think there's any way they trade the pick or draft anyone else. That's just my own personal feeling about the situation. That being the case, I feel that Manning WILL NOT stick around to be anybody's mentor. He wants to play and win. He wants to cement his legacy. He wants to increase his numbers. I don't blame him for any of that.

Where I'm getting this from?

Peter King, NBC sports, Mike Florio and profootballtalk.com.

Another point is that I doubt Jim Irsay would come out and say that he is drafting Luck, with Manning's situation still up in the air.

Why is so hard to think that Manning and Luck may be on the same team?

And why wouldn't he be able to continue to "win, put up his numbers, and cement his legacy?"

We saw it with Favre and Rodgers.

Especially in the new rookie cap era...it's not that out of the realm of possibility to believe that Manning could play for the next 2-3 yrs while Luck is the QB of the future.

While some (or many) would disagree, it's certainly a possibility.

With all of the intense hype regarding Luck in the past 2 yrs, I don't think immediately throwing him to the wolves is the best option either.

I guess only time will tell, but I wouldn't be all that quick to write off Manning just yet.

I NEVER said he wouldn't be able to do that in Indy. However, I will say that I don't think it will happen in Indy should they decide to draft Luck. What's going on in Indy seems vastly different than what went down in GB, strictly from an outsiders perspective obviously. Again, that's just my own personal feeling.
