Good lord, YES..

Unless it's the reincarnation of Lombardi himself, that is.

Edit: check that, even Lombardi would be screwed too.

I don't know that BB has many options at this point. McD's results in Denver were ambiguous - some folks say his drafting was good albeit they said it after he was canned. He didn't do much in St. Louis - not sure if that's his fault or if it's a talent problem. I tend to think Brady can make any offensive coordinator look good. I always wondered if a former player - maybe a Steve Grogan type - would be a good option.
McDaniels is one of the best play-callers (and play designers) I've ever seen. I'd absolutely welcome him back.

McDaniels has failed in two straight jobs after leaving the Pats. He needs success a lot more than he needs to not be in BB's shadow.

The Rams lost their top FOUR wide receivers, their #1 TE, their starting FB, and three-fifths of their starting OL.

I don't think you can say he "failed" in STL.

ETA:
Depending on who ultimately becomes the head coach, McDaniels could be retained. Sam Bradford genuinely loves this offense. He has talked with several QBs and coaches who have run this offense and everyone tells him it takes two to three years to master it. Surprisingly, if given a choice between the west coast offense he learned as a rookie and the ‘Patriot’ offense he used this year, Bradford says he’d prefer McDaniels’ offense.
Just something to think about for the new coach.

mcdaniels is alot like norv turner

you cant hold the rams and denver against him, those are tough places to be succesful lately, and mcdaniels was only an oc in st louis. the broncos are only now just making the playoffs again for i think only the 2nd time since losing elway, and this year due to a really stagnant afc west field.

mcdaniels back in ne should get the most out of him.

Would not be against this happening!

But, if he isn't fired, would the Patriots need to give something up for him? Seeing as it is a like for like job?

So here are the pieces to the puzzle right now:

1. BOB is gone for next year.
2. McDaniels is under contract with the Rams.

[Everything under this is just a report]
3. Jeff Fisher is the favorite to be the Rams' next head coach.
4. Fisher would not keep McDaniels.
5. The Patriots have asked for permission to talk with McDaniels
6. The Patriots really like Brian Ferentz (TE coach) as a future OC candidate, but he's not ready.
7. McDaniels wants to go somewhere temporarily with the goal of another shot at being a HC.
8. Brian Shottenheimer is rumored to be in line for the Jags coach
9. The SOJ's and Tannenbaum would pounce on McDaniels after 4 (above) occurs

i dont think so as long as the rams give permission.

lateral moves arent illegal theyre just rare.

i cant recall a playoff team seeking permission from a non playoff team in regards to speaking to one of their current coaches while said playoff team hasnt even played their first playoff game yet, that seems very rare.

i cant see mcdaniels and rex's egos coexisting.

Will be interestesting to see if McDaniels has learned a bit of humility.

If he has. This may work.

If he hasn't...................

I think Bill is getting the jump on the competition under the circumstances. It's a given Pioli will persue him, but since he wasn't yet available no one thought to persue him and Pioli is caught short again because he's going thru the motions on his HC search...rather than just naming RAC as it's expected he ultimately will. Josh watched the Mangini fiasco in the swamp so he knows better than to go there. But they are in limbo in the meantime as Schottenheimer interviews for HC gigs... I think read Atlanta granted permission for their OC (Mularky) to interview in Jacksonville (where they are looking for an offensive HC to develop Gabbert), and that would make Atlanta another situation where they'd likely be interested in Josh.

Daboll is out there but he's in limbo pending Miami's HC search and circus but he left here with Mangini when Bill wouldn't even make him the QB coach so likely is off the radar. There was another young gun in the pipeline at the same time whose name eludes me at the moment, but he left when Josh got the job so it's unlikely Bill is interested even now...

Doesn't matter whether you grow em or hire em as hired guns, if they succeed they are gone. As Bill would say it is what it is. As for outsiders, they don't know the system and the system endures even as it adapts to talent. Someone's suggestion of Grogan is comical for that reason. I don't understand why people can't just accept that.

To me this looks an awful lot like the path that BB took. he left a successful coordinator position with the Giants under Parcells. After a failure in Cleveland, he rejoined Parcells in New England and then with the NYJ before earning another head coaching job. For Josh, I hope it works out similarly.

Reading the tweets and the StLouis Post Dispatch article that generated them, both the Pats and Chiefs have reportedly sought permission to talk to Josh but there are no reports it has been granted. The thinking seems to be that while the QB prefers Josh's system to the West Coast one he ran as a rookie, if Fisher is hired they don't think he will want to retain Josh. So they may not grant permission pending Fisher's decision on the HC position and his staff. That makes this a way to let Josh know without tampering that he's wanted if he's in fact available... Some said that was the reason RAC and Charlie went to KC, because Scott reached out to them even before they were available...although I doubt either was coming back here for obvious reasons. They had already succeeded with Bill and Tom and after failing as HC's needed to show they could succeed without Bill and Tom. Scott and Matt provided them the perfect opportunity to. Same system and scheme, different talent and no HOF shadows to work under.

Fisher would not accept the HC job unless he is given a totally free hand on who his coaches will be. And I can't see him keeping JM unless he has a previously established working relationship with him. Why would Fisher risk his return on a person unknown to him? Provided he is the guy for STL, I think JM is very likely gone (unless the two of them click immediately).

On the other side of the coin, with JM having the Denver debacle then a down year in STL (whatever the reasons for those failures), I would think it is a bad situation for JM to be working under Fisher's return to the NFL. What if his philosophies, personalities, ways of doing business clash? JM's safest move is to come back to BB's staff, let TFB's continued success over the next year or two guarantee a positive refresh of his name, then go get a HC job. Otherwise his next best move is KC with the many known personalities there (though that is a trickier proposition getting that offense to be potent therefore a bigger risk).

Call me naive but I thought there was a rift between BB and McD. He was an ass after Denver beat the Patriots and I believe he through the Patriots under the bus when he was caught cheating - saying it was something that he had learned with the Patriots.

Wow, great news! Would love to have him back for a couple of years!

No. No. No.

Whoever replaces Bill Belichick will be the luckiest head coach in the league. There will be a line around the block to work for Bob and Jonathan Kraft.

The Krafts have created a Rooney and Mara environment. Were the head coaches of the NY Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers screwed? Not one bit.

Coughlin and Tomlin have each won Super Bowls and continued winning traditions.

I can name 15 franchises where the new HC is screwed and New England is not one of them.

Have thought he was being bred for this job for a while now.. complete with a failed HC position in another organization.

I read somewhere Belichick doesn't work with 'yes' men as major coordinators. Big arguments from the draft room to the locker room with Weis and Crennel.

No, I don't think so. I am not even sure they would have to do anything other than sign him and then the Rams are off the hook for the last year of his contract.

I'm not sure what the Rams thought process was with keeping him? Unless they plan on bringing in a DC without HC experience, I don't see the HC keeping McDaniels.
