interesting note on branch

That article pretty much sums up the whole Twig deal. Thanks for posting.

We are sooo lucky the Pats have BB as coach. He rarely makes mistakes, even when many of us sure he did.

Thank you!

That was the quintessential summation of the Branch Affair.

Should be required reading.

Actually, the whole column was pretty good.

So much for that.

If I were a Seattle fan I would be going crazy. They poured a lot of dough (and a pick) into Burleson and Branch for no reason. Why not keep Steve Hutchinson?

Bumpity bump.

This should be required reading, not only for those still fighting the Civil War, but for those who will start a new one in Feb.

Seems like an entertaining/illuminating site, too. Thanks SVN.

Good stuff with numbers to back it up.

That was, indeed, a great column. I wish we still had Branch but not at the expense of $6M a year and a #1 pick.

homlgren tried to go for the quick fix, he's not gonna be in seattle much longer

We made out fine in this deal and still are making a run for the SB without him AND we didn't overpay.

Seattle also overpaid for Nate Burleson and he only caught a measly 145 yards on the season. Holmgren essentially traded one of the best guards in the league for Nate Busteson as well. Would'nt surprise me if the Seahawks end up like how Tennessee did a few years ago - cap hell.

we so far seem to have gotten the better of the deal, but lets see what our 1st rounder from seattle turns out to be. The article is fairly decent but the stat stories tell only one side. Alexander and Hasselbeck missed some decent time, so its no suprise they barley got into the playoffs. Also how many more times does Brady have to air a ball 30+ yards to only see it go through gaffney or jacksons hands, branch would have caught each one of those. At any rate seattle is crazy for taking another WR & putting that much stock into it, they already had a decent core.

It's hard to say that Branch would have caught every one of them, seeing as he seems to have come down with a case of the dropsies, and worse, the can't-get-opensies.

two words: bull sht

for the last time: it's not that Branch was an elite talent or was worth whatever he made from Seattle.

His value to THE PATRIOTS -- and the reason he was worth a premium to THE PATRIOTS -- was the RAPPORT and CHEMISTRY between him and the QB.

Bottom line is we could've afforded him if we'd simply called his agent down to Gillette and locked him in a room until we got a deal done. letting him shop around was amazingly ******ed.

anyone -- and I like Kerry and the CHFF guys -- but I mean anyone, who doesn't think we did NOT want to keep Branch and had it all planned out like this, is simply clueless.

If you don't realize we'd be:
A: unstoppable
B: coming off a bye week
C: hosting a game this week
D: on our way to a 4th SB

then you're delusional.

Not saying we're doomed as we stand...we have a shot.

But you can't put a price on a championship and IMO, Branch is worth way more THIS YEAR on OUR OFFENSE than he is to anyone else.

The Chargers are going to score next week.

Our offense has to win the game.

Next week, we're asking Tom to take a guy who was 3rd string in SD and a guy who was in the past year, cut by HOUSTON and cut by Philly after a poor training camp...let's be honest here, REJECTS -- the worst WR corps in football...and to somehow hang with one of the most scary offenses I've ever seen, an offense that can score whatever it needs to -- no matter how far behind they are....and against a defense that doesn't give receivers any time to separate.

If things break our way who knows...you just have to wonder how much easier it all would've been.

it's now time to move on...spinning the numbers doesn't change the fact that it's a far steeper climb right now without DB...can this offense play at a high level for the next 3 games against playoff caliber defenses? No matter what DB does in Seattle, that remains the ultimate question for the Patriots.

Nobody is pulling harder for this team than I am...you have to understand how difficult it is to do what they're doing right now...this is essentially a rebuilding year (to some extent every year is a rebuilding year for our team).

I'm too damn proud of them to pretend they're not disadvantaged...that's probably the best way I can put it.

Taildragger -
I'm sorry, man. I hate to do this, but wtf are you talking about? Deion Branch was not that much of a difference maker and you are kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

Yes, the Patriots wanted to keep Branch. We all know that. But, Branch didn't want to stay.

You are saying that Deion Branch is worth 2 VICTORIES? Actually, 4 victories since you include the AFC Divisional game and AFC Championship game as sure wins. No player, outside the QB, is worth two victories on his own, let alone 4.

And there is no guarantee that Branch would have been making the catches that Caldwell, Gaffney and Jackson have dropped. That is just wishful thinking on your part.

Something to keep in mind. The 2004 offense, the what many people consider to be the BEST Pats offense, in the dynasty, only put up 44 TDs. This year's offense put up 45. Yes, it was somewhat lopsided in that the Pats put up 25 passing and 20 rushing TDs compared to 26 passing and 18 rushing TDs. But its not that much of a difference.

So, forgive me if I feel that this offense doesn't revolve around Deion Branch and his rapport with Brady and that it revolves MORE around Brady and his rapport with ALL his receivers. I also believe that Brady's mechanics weren't 100% (hence him getting a hold of his body mechanic a few weeks ago).

I always wonder... if Branch had been drafted by the Texans, would have ever become anything more than a role player slot receiver? He might have been just like Jabar Gaffney. He looks like it now. The only reason he was ever a star was because he was on the receiving end of a career game in front of a national audience.

It's not just Branch. Look what happened to Givens. He got a payday from the Titans. Has he transformed their team? Has Patten transformed the Redskins?

Honestly, by this point in the season, I think Gaffney and Caldwell look and play a lot like Branch and Givens, respectively, in the scheme. So, is it really the receivers, at all?

Or maybe is it the scheme and the future HOF QB that's throwing the ball?

Or is it the Front Office that just knows how to find players they can work with... in the draft, off the street-- wherever?

You make some intelligent arguments:

two words: bull sht

for the last time: ... ... ...

anyone, who doesn't ... is simply clueless.

If you don't realize ... then you're delusional.
Good rationale. If you disgree then you are wrong.

You said if we had Branch, we would be unstoppable. Could you just explain why we were 10-6 with him last year (obviously got stopped 6 times) and got stopped cold in the second round? Doesn't sound unstoppable.

Or why we are 12-4 without him? Soesn't seem like we are all that weak.

We obviously did better in the regular season without him this year than we did last year with him. If we go further in the playoffs this year without him than we did last year with him, will you admit we did better without him?

Any idea why we are scoring more points per game this year than we did last year?

Or will you stick to your erudite "If you disagree with me you are clueless" argument?

And don't forget that first round pick.

:agree: You got this right on head of a nail....It is the scheme and Tom Brady makes the reciever core....Gaffeny and Caldwell are good recievers......GO PATS!!!:rocker:
