Hoyer - How Long Does He Stay as a backup?

Interesting discussion earlier tonight with Christopher Price who was filling in on WEEI. He brought up an interesting point about whether or not Hoyer will be looking to compete for a starting job elsewhere after this season. Barring another incident like what happened in '08 he's not starting here, and he's probably better than a lot of the lower tier guys who were starting in weeks 12-16 this season.

Needless to say that sparked another discussion about his future here. Have to say I really hadn't thought about it, but since he's in the final year of his deal it will be an interesting thing to keep an eye on this offseason.

Who is he better than? Matt Moore? Blaine Gabbert? I don't see any other teams envisioning Hoyer as their franchise QB.

Those are a couple of guys. I'm not saying he's a "franchise QB" right now, but from my perspective I could see him going to a team that had guys like that and potentially getting an opportunity after an injury or a losing streak. At least then he could get some snaps and maybe make a name for himself by at least getting a shot. He'll never get that chance here (hopefully)

That was the overall context of the conversation. I thought it was interesting, and they also talked about the fact it would potentially move Mallett up the depth chart.

I don't think he commands more in trade than he is valuable as a backup in NE. If the Patriots CAN control his comings n goings (he isn't unrestricted I don't believe) they should keep him as the primary backup. Mallett can be #2 the following year.

I only caught part of it (had to go to the grocery store) so I don't know the overall parameters on his deal right off hand. Tough to say what they could get for him if he was traded. He's only had 16 attemps in the last two seasons, although one of them was a touchdown pass

That sweet pass to Gronk Sunday earned him a starter role somewhere else next year. Move over, Matt Flynn.

I feel bad for young backup QB's that have potential and no outlet, the old timers not so much. Hoyer looks so excited when he get's the littlest opportunity, like a kid in a candy store. I'd like to see him get a shot somewhere else, he has a great attitude.

He's more valuable to us as a back up than he is worth in trade value. I also don't see any other teams going after him like we saw with Matt Cassel. Keeping him for a year or two more would be great.

I see his ceiling as a top backup, a Huard type. He is very accurate and has very good poise back there, but he does not have a strong arm and he is slight of stature. Not sure he can take the pounding.

No reason for him to do anything other than backup Brady in New England, and the Patriots should be willing to pay him handsomely for that.

Hoyer is valuable as the NEP's backup. And several members of the media have been bragging him off and on. They probably get that from sources around the league.

But with bad teams drafting QBs early and often, how much can they get for him ? If it's less than a 2nd (which I'd tend to think is the case) I'd say keep him. I am pretty certain they can limit his movement for next season...

One dude who'd command a HUGE ransom ? The GB QB. Wow. That's the guy I see moving - ahead of Hoyer by a long shot (in terms of what he'd fetch).

There's a few other factors affecting Hoyer's value:

1. Matt Flynn
2. The whole league watched Arizona get burned on the Kolb trade this year, Seattle on Whitehurst a couple years ago, etc.
3. This years draft is deep with QBs and so was last years. Teams that needed QBs last year got them (Jax, Minn, Tenn, etc.) and teams that need them next year will get them (Seattle, Miami, Washington)

Seriously, though, I was hoping for him to continue to play and not kneel down. You know a part of him had to HATE taking the knee.

If only we had played a smart game vs the Bills the first time around, this game could have been one where we could have helped him show his prowess. Oh, well, next season preseason should provide him the platform.

there is no actual game tape of Hoyer playing an actual game in the NFL, that means NOONE knows what he can or cannot do

so what we are basing things off is what ppl may THINK he can accomplish

other teams would first exhaust other options, more "surefire" options...than if they are still needy they will look towards Hoyer, simply because of the Patriots background and history of developing QBs

no one will sign him as a starter, but as a #2, possibly fighting for a starting role in training camp? absolutely....

i think he will get decent money on another team just for his potential, so i dont expect him back next season, and by midway next season i expect him to be a starter somewhere

but i dont mind having Mallet as the #2 starting next season

He was on a three-year rookie deal; he's an RFA this year, which means the Pats would have to give him a second-round tender next year to receive anything in a trade.

Plus let's not forget the fact that he actually WAS the #2 backup over Mallett the entire season. . . .

Matt Flynn is going to be the #1 guy as far as backup to starting QB so that and the fact that matt cassel has not been seting the NFL on fire makes teams not want to give up a 2th or 3rd round pick for him + pay him 7 or 8 million a year and he's a 4 year vet who has never started a NFL game,

Andy Dalton was a 2th round pick who has he's team in the playoffs, do i really want to give up and 2th or 3rd for Hoyer when i can get a younger better QB for that same pick and that pick will cost a lot less to sign that is what teams will be asking them selfs

I think that Hoyer is really nothing special. He looked good in mop-up duty last year, and now everyone is having a knee-jerk reaction. This reminds me of the Rob Johnson fiasco for the Bills. He has one good performance, it's the only tape anyone has on the guy, and a stupid GM gave him a stupid contract.
