Re: Gronk Looking for a tight end record today

The other important thing to recognize in this great statistical receiving season is that Gronk is a focal point of the blocking game as well. A great blocking tight end just blew up the receiving records. That doesn't happen.

He is the most complete, best tight end in the NFL and he's 22.

Gronk is the best TE in the game, but the Pats broke the record with their innovative 2-TE offense the same way Moss/Welker broke records when teams weren't used to defending the new Meyer spread attack. I don't think Gronk will ever achieve these numbers again in his career, similar to what happened to Moss after 2007.

One reason Gronk does so well is because of Aaron Hernandez. When they both line up across the defense, the better coverage linebacker usually lines up against Hernandez. This gives Gronk a better matchup. This is why it is imperative that the Patriots lock up Hernandez and keep both tight ends here long term.

I think Graham ended the day with 1310 yards, and Gronk with 1322. Close!

Re: Gronk Looking for a tight end record today

man these TE's are amazing

Re: Gronk Looking for a tight end record today

Now its 100% for sure that Gronk is better receiving TE than Jimmy.

Fixed that for you.

Gronk was always, undoubtedly, the better complete TE. Now he is also, undoubtedly, the better receiving and blocking TE than Graham, and the overall best TE in the league.

Re: Gronk Looking for a tight end record today

I was starting to wonder if he had the record or not. They said NOTHING about it all game. Fail.

Looks like Chriqui and Cross haven't improved since their abysmal, lifeless preseason performances. I guess we shouldn't expect much given that they are CBS's ninth ranked broadcast team.

Re: Gronk Looking for a tight end record today

Gronk owns the single season TD and YDS record for TE.

*Thanks to that pass by Hoyer.

BB clapping on the sidelines suggests they went to Gronk specifically for the record?

I hope he kept that ball. I suspect Canton is going to want it...to go into the display case near where Gronk's bust will eventually be. :D

I disagree 100%

Re: Gronk Looking for a tight end record today

I suspect with New Orleans and New England being 1/2 in both QB yardage and TE yardage, New Orleans wanted both #1s and New England wanted a split.

Graham, Gronkowski go back and forth with tight end yardage mark | ProFootballTalk

Graham first set the record. Then, Gronkowski passed him, after Graham and other New Orleans offensive starters had been removed from the route over the Panthers.

So Saints coach Sean Payton put Graham back in, and Graham took the record back from Gronkowski.

And then Pats coach Bill Belichick put Gronkowski back in late, giving him the final record on a 22-yard catch that preceded three straight kneel downs by quarterback Brian Hoyer to end the game.

Gronkowski finished with 108 yards, and Graham had 97. For the season, Gronkowski ends with 1,327 and Graham petered out at 1,310.

Along the way, a 31-year-old record changed hands four times.

Problem with that comparison:

2008—Cassel
2009—Moss slowing down, no other receiving weapons other than Moss/Welker.
2010—Moss done

Now, teams wanting to deal with GRONKnandez also have to deal with Welker. That's why some folks think that adding a deep threat would make DBs **** themselves just thinking about it.

Plus you can't change one basic fact: GRONK will have at least one advantage—size, strength, or speed—against 99%+ of the D men in this league.

That's pretty awesome. I was wondering why BB was so pumped after that last Gronk catch..

I hear this repeated over and over, but I did not see this from Belichick. I saw a tall guy (Mallett?) cheering when he got the record. Do you have a video link?

Bill was applauding when he came right behind Gronk.

Nah I don't have the video. And yes Mallet was way more pumped. It was BB hype. Fist pumps..

Re: Gronk Looking for a tight end record today

He now has to be called The Gronk. Somehow "Gronk" just doesn't seem to be enough.

"Gronk" was never enough. Hence "GRONK."
