McCourty worse than Darius Butler.

Ye Gads. Double fail.

I'm not saying McCourty has played well, because he hasn't, but lots of teams avoid Arrington who can pick them off, and go after McCourty, who has no legitimate safety help on any play.

You can't compare defensive numbers this year vs. any other year. This year is an abnormality. There are two QBs likely to break Marino's yardage records (one already has). I heard on the radio yesterday that in the history of the NFL prior to this year, only 23 QBs have passed for more than 4,500 yards. Right now six QBs are realistically in place to break that mark with one more possibly able to do it with a really good game. Five have already surpassed that mark (Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Manning, and Stafford), Philip Rivers is 186 yards away from 4,500 yards and Matt Ryan is 429 yards away from 4,500.

This year is going to smash the offense records for the year. Single season offensive records have already been smashed and more could be beaten this weekend (Gronk is 71 yards away from the single season receiving yardage record for TEs). If offensive numbers are going through the roof this year, that means that defensive numbers are going to equally bad. This will probably be the statistically worse year for defense for the league.

This is why I am not nearly as concerned about the Pats' defense as many others are.

If you believe the numbers in the article then McCourty's targets and completions against aren't going to end up much higher than last year. Its the massive amount of yards that are being given up per attempt that is so different. Safety obviously plays a role there.

so mccourty has given up close to a 1000 yards this season even when missing games. That is impressive.

Look at him on this play. Why play so soft? His reaction is slow, everything is just wrong with him and needs the offseason to correct such things.

Edit, in looking at that again, I think James was rather late in diagnosing the playing. I think Mccourty did what he was tolded to do.

Bill Belichick responds nicely by moving McCourty to safety. The defense settles in with THREE consecutive shutout quarters to close out the game against the #11 NFL passing offense.

BB might be on to something with this new defensive alignment.

This year is tough to tell.. minimal TC, no off season, our safeties were depleted, D Backfield in flux and his injury..

Give him a pass and wait until next year, if no significant improvement cut him loose..

Patriots Football Weekly, this weeks issue has a full page article on McCourty. PFW says ""As harsh as reality may sound, McCourty couldn't play much worse than he has this year". "Unfortunately, while the 2010 first round pick surprised the entire league by notching seven interceptions and earning Pro Bowl honors as a rookie, his sophmore effort has been equally as unexpected for the negative."

Note: I have intentionally posted The Patriots Football Weekly comments in this Practice Squad Thread. I read the PFW comments as negative so I believe they belong in the Practice Squad Forum not the Main Forum.
