Great game They posted 37 points and unveiled a new weapon that has slowly been developing. Don't forget Gaffney joined us for their 7th game and had taken about 10 games to figure out whats going on. IMO, Gaffney's development made Gabriel redundant and cuttable.

And not one fumble! :)

Josh does deserve some credit today. At one point during the game CBS showed a graphic that showed the Patriots had 20 rushing plays and 20 passing plays. Now that's balance.

Brady brings balance to the force.

Now I just hope he doesn't turn to the Dark Side.

Time to Give McDaniels Props

Ok, this guy has been getting crap all year. But if you look at the offensive performance over the last month, the offense is clicking (40, 24,40, and 30 points respectively). Yeah, there are stretches in the games where the offense is not effective, but they were in Weis' offense too. McDaniels' gameplan for today was great. We had three drives today that we didn't score on and one was the Dillon fumble drive which was not McDaniels' fault. We also had 4 ten plus play drives.

Also, I went back and looked at the 2003 season (since everyone calls Weis a genius and that was a Super Bowl year) and compared the yearly totals for the offense compared to this year. Look at these stats (only regular season):

Points per Game
2003: 21.8
2006: 24.1
(Note: The Pats had 6 defensive TDs in 2003, 5 INT and 1 fumble recovery, and none in 2006, both teams had 1 special teams TD)

Adjusted PPG after removing Defensive and Special Teams TDs
2003: 19.2
2006: 23.7

Yards
2003: 5039
2006: 5369

Offensive TDs
2003: 32
2006: 45

First Downs
2003: 294
2006: 330

Third Down Percentage
2003: 37.0% (227 attempts)
2006: 42.5% (226 attempts)

Fourth Down Percentage
2003: 42.9 (14 attempts)
2006: 80.0% (20 attempts)

Sacks Allowed
2003: 32
2006: 29

Giveaways
2003: 24
2006: 27
(Note: The Pats fumbled twice on the same play this year. I am not sure if the 15 fumbles that the Pats are credited for included both fumbles on the same play)

# of Punts
2003: 76
2006: 69

Brady's Numbers
2003: 3620 yards, 60.2% completion %, 23 TDs, 12 INTs, 85.9 rating
2006: 3529 yards, 61.8% completion %, 24 TDs, 12 INTs, 87.9 rating

Number of games where the offense scored 10 or less points
2003: 4
2006: 2

I think it is time for the McDaniels haters to come around and give this guy some credit. He is really beginninng to look like an up and coming OC in this league.

The offense is ready when it counts!

Awesome read. :D

One thing I like that Josh does better than Weiss is mixing up the calls on 1st and 2nd downs.

Under Weiss, if the Patriots ran on 1st down and didn't get at least 5 yards he would always throw on 2nd down at least 75% of the time...very predictable. Weiss's other talents glossed over this because it worked for him...hard to argue with 3 rings.

I think that McDaniels does a great job of keeping teams off balance on 1st and 2nd downs concerning rush or pass. He'll rush the 1st two and he'll pass the 1st two or a combination...it's not perfect, no team is but at least it is not predictable for the defense to know who they need in the game on 1st and 2nd downs.

I haven't re-watched the game yet; was one of those 3 non-scoring drives when Gaffney lost a 1st down, by taking a step backwards?

I, too, need to mention that the Pats should have converted at least one more of their 1st-and-goal situations into a TD. The play-calling on one of them, in particular, was very pedestrian. Sorry, but against SD, 1st-and-goals must = TDs.

From Peter King's MMQB:

New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is another rising star in the Belichick ranks, a John Carroll grad whispering offensive thoughts into the great Brady's ear. Brady and McDaniels are building the kind of relationship you hope a quarterback and coach build, the kind Brady's had only with Charlie Weis since entering the league in 2000.

Also missed this from King's MMQB:

Coach of the Week

Josh McDaniels, offensive coordinator/quarterback coach, New England. There been some brilliant gameplans in the league this year -- Sean Payton's Saints strategy at Dallas, for one --but the multifaceted New England plan that put up 30 offensive points against the Jets is up there with the best. I talked to Tom Brady about what a great job the Pats did (26 first downs, 358 yards, 33:20 time of possession), and he kept mentioning McDaniels and what a great job he and Bill Belichick did in outfoxing a very smart Jets staff.

Although there were moments I didn't like, I generally thought the play-calling yesterday was first class. The opening drive was a thing of beauty, relentless and clever. And I loved those consecutive plays where they rammed first Faulk and then Maroney straight up the middle with the same plays.

They'll have something special for San Diego. Whether it's special enough, we'll see, but I thik they are all heading in the right direction.

I hope that's all he's whispering in his ear. :D :D

Well, Tom did break up with Bridgette. Maybe there is a scandal brewing.
