Colts/Patriots on ESPN

They had the Colts/Patriots AFC champ game on earlier, the one in Indy. They showed most highlights, but left out the Reche Caldwell parts. I am trying to find video, or information of the circumstances of the 2 drops that he had. I thought the screen one where he was wide open could have secured the game, but it was so long ago that I cant remember for sure. Maybe someone can refresh my memory.

All I remember, despite my best efforts to erase it from my mind, is how relatively safe that 18 point lead combined with apparent momentum seemed, and how wrong I was

That was an easy TD, that very likely would have iced the game. It was a blown coverage assignment, so Caldwell was all alone on the sideline, and could have walked into the endzone. Brady saw it right away.

To be fair to Reche, he was a decent receiver, and almost every receiver has a play or 2 like that. The easy ones can sometimes be the hardest.

But, if he catches it, it's about 95% that Brady has a 4th ring.

Would have put us up by 7 instead of 3, so Colts probably would have tied the game and we'd have been in much better position to win yes. But it wouldn't have iced the game by any means. The iffy PI on Troy Brown that took away the pass to Watson that put us in a position to add to 21-3, THAT drive could have iced the game.

The refs were abysmal in that game. Didn't they call a penalty on Hobbs for faceguarding, which by the current rules doesn't even exist anymore?

Yep, then Reche Caldwell was practically tackled in the end zone and no flag. Very inconsistent officiating aside from the side they were favoring

Why would you watch that?? Horrible game, awful call on hobbs gifted colts a touchdown, caldwell mugged in the endzone on the drive to make it 34-31 should of been 1st & goal at the 1, and the weak roughing the passer on TBC that led the colts on their game winning drive.

Maybe it's just semantics and maybe it was only a couple of seconds in real time, but one of the other frustrating things about that play was that Brady didn't seem to be in a hurry to snap the ball when Caldwell was completely forgotten by Colts D.

The way I remember it, Brady was going through his regular pre-snap calls, and just before the ball was snapped, the Colts realized their error and sent a guy to cover Caldwell. Had Caldwell caught the ball, the Patriots would have had a 1st down or a TD if Caldwell was able to avoid a desperate tackle attempt.

As other people have mentioned, the lack of a PI call on a pass to Caldwell in the end zone was another low point in this game. All the classic ingredients for a penalty were there: The defender made contact with the receiver before the ball arrived, prevented Caldwell from making a play on the ball and never looked back for the ball. Instead of applying the same standards as Hobbs received on a play with much less contact, the refs let all that go.

Edit: Not worth a new post, but ESPN also aired a show on SB42 today. I had heard comments about this, but the failure of the 1st offensive play by the Patriots in that game is enough to make you sick. They showed the play from multiple angles and if Brady had been able to connect with Maroney, he was gone for TD, no question. There would have been no need for dancing because Maroney would have had 2 O-linemen plus 2 receivers out in front to block the 2 Giants defenders down the field. Instead, in what turned out to be a sign of things to come, the rush got to Brady too quickly and his pass was just short of his target.
