The Patriots Are AMAZING Closers: 53-2 record if leading at halftime

Did anyone else catch this statistic during broadcasts? The Patriots are 53-2 under Belichick when they lead at halftime. This is REMARKABLE; over a 96% winning percentage. Consistently keeping a lead requires so many things...a strong running game, mistake-free QB, good defense, no turnovers, etc etc.

It is like with the Yankees and Mariano Rivera, when teams knew that if they were losing by the 7th inning, the game was over. It can really mess with an opposing team's psyche and make them play desparate.

Even more impressively, they are something like 66-1 when leading after three quarters, the only loss, of course, being that meltdown in Miami.

As I posted in another thread, those numbers are among the most amazing statistics in all of sports.

BTW, I believe either 3 or 4 of Brady's playoff interceptions were all in that Denver game last year (including a bogus hail mary at the end) - excluding that, he is almost flawless when it comes to playoff game management.

Great stat, I was wondering about that today, I couldn't remember the last time the Pats took a lead into the second half and blew it.. we need to be proud of these guys, even when they don't win Super Bowls they try their hardest! Again, NOBODY here takes them for granted (except for the members who also have red seats, but they take everything for granted... b*astards)

He through one in that snow bowl in oakland.
One vs Indy in 2004 AFC Championship.
One in the Super bowl over Carolina.
Only two last year at Denver.

The amazing thing is this stat is for HALFTIME. The other team has a chance to adjust, with half the game left to play, but it doesn't matter if it's against the Pats.

The 66-1 record going with a lead into the 4th quarter is just as nasty. I don't think I can truly comprehend both of these crazy statistics.

Can you imagine if someone had a stat that said something like "when the Red Sox lead going into the 4th inning, they win every time"?

More people need to know about this, *especially* players on opposing teams. I want players to start thinking, "crap, we're down 7-0 early in the 2nd quarter against the Pats, this game is over".

It isn't all Brady though. His greatest strength is he makes minimal mistakes, not that he puts up huge stats.

I think our defense has been under-appreciated for a very long time. Based on our scoring defense over the past several years, I would venture to say that we've had a historically great defense for awhile too.

Those stats are stunning, but throw 'em out for Sunday's game. San Diego piles on the points in the 4th quarter. They are typically slow-starters on offense out of the locker room during the 1st and 3rd quarters. The Pats need to get some offense going from the get-go and build some cushion b/c SD will play their way back into the game late.

The Pats do have an excellent chance Sunday IMO. They are a road-tested team and SD's offense will likely be out of rhythm due to the bye. The Chargers have not played a team of the Pats' caliber this season and has looked beatable against some average 9-7 teams (KC, Seattle).

Our offense is clicking and will score points, but the D will be the key to the game - confuse Rivers, force him into mistakes. SD had the lowest # of turnovers all season, getting a couple early will throw them off their game.
