Some interesting stuff, but kind of a weird/lazy article in that it only mentions their mother in an "oh yeah, she probably did something for her kids too" aside at the end. It creates a probably mistaken impression of the Gronks' childhood home as having the atmosphere of a military training camp.

The writer kinda makes out the dad to be some bat**** crazy Michael Jackson's dad type.

I get more of the impression that Mr. Gronk supported and fostered his children's athletic abilities as a means to paying for education with a shot at pro sports, not some kind of myopic NFL or bust strategy. The way this article is written, they make Mr. Gronk sound kinda like the guy who tazed his 2 year old kid so that he could be tougher when he grew up.

There's also a line at the end where they have Mr. Gronk quoted as saying "I created this kid". Again, I don't think Mr. Gronk meant created as in 'developed talent of', but probably meant created as 'from the fruit of my loins'. And that it's amazing how successful his progeny is.

That said, I have to say that this is something I've almost never heard of re: college athletes:

Rob had surgery too -- so serious that he very nearly retired and collected a $4 million insurance policy set up by his dad. He refused, taking a huge financial chance.

I have no idea of the details of this, but I have to say that it's either brilliant or scary . . . or maybe even both.

I believe a lot of juniors who are highly rated draft prospects get insurance policies for injury if they decide to go back for their Senior year.

Its very rare that a kid will give up any chance to play in the NFL, so the injury has to be pretty catastrophic for the insurance policy to actually kick in.

What I learned is that the fact that they had a great-great-grandfather who was an Olympic cyclist is highly relevant, but the superhuman efforts of their devoted stay-at-home mom, documented elsewhere, were pretty much beside the point. (Notice how there's zero mention of nutrition, which you'd usually expect to see in an article of this kind? That's presumably because it was 100% mom's domain.)

It's fine to publish an interview with Gordy Sr., just present it as such.

I agree.

Case in point: IIRC, there were times when the Gronkowskis were spending $500/week on food alone.

Doesn't really matter what the title of something is, the meat of the article is about the dad and what he did to abus... I mean get his boys ready to play sports.

I'm not saying the mother shouldn't be given credit for her boys being SuperGronks because she should be, in all likelyhood she should get far more credit than the dad, but that wasn't the point of the article, no matter what the title says.

As others have said it was a poorly written/conceptualized article about a topic that is very interesting to most of us.

I hate the "Gronk" term. It's as if Gron-kowski is too difficult to say. And yet it's just another 3 syllable word and the US Polish population is quite significant.

Any name can be shorted but the correct way of shortening this name is not Gronk but Gron. He's just too good a player to ape out in some sophomoric way. Give him the class he deserves.
