He explains pretty good reasons....except fails to mention the defense too much which is really the only thing that could stop them.

Reason No. 1: Tom Brady

Reason No. 3: Patriots are hottest team in the AFC

Pats are the highest scoring AFC team by far, Brady is driven like I've never seen....and the team is hot (bad teams be damned)

1. Big Ben is banged up (still one tough SOB though)
2. Joe Flacco stinks (awful this season)
3. They're flat-out better than Den/Hou/Oak/NYJ/Cin or whatever other team that make the playoffs

The Pats SHOULD be able to beat everyone besides Pittsburgh. Even against the Steelers the odds should be 50/50, especially if they win the #1 seed. If they somehow lose to anyone besides the Steelers (again), it'll be because they unfortunately choked (again).

I am sooooo sick of the argument that the pats have no defense. Their defense is just as good as the saints and packers' D. If the patriots have no chance to win the SB, then neither does new orleans or green bay.

"Just as good as the Saints and Packers" isn't a strong argument for having a defense.

lets hope..they are in perfect position..one game at a time now...win last 2 and they have an easy road.

Let's just hope it doesn't turn out like the past few years

I can see them going to Indy and I can see them getting shocked again. Depends on how quickly the offense wants to start. If the game is close going into the second half I have confidence. If it starts like the ravens game a couple years ago Im not sure the D has the ability to get off the field fast enough for the Brady and co to mount a comeback. Were a great second half team and we need to make sure were in striking distance when the 3rd quater starts.

I really don't understand this line of thinking. It wasn't the defense in 2009 and it wasn't the defense last year. Both year's the offense failed to show up, the defense was hung out to dry. Granted in 2009 they lost their only real playmaker in Welker, and the defense gave up a big play to open the game.

Last year Brady throws a terrible pick on the first drive where they were moving the ball at will, the defense held the Jets to a FG try on a drive that started on the NE 12 yard line, Folk missed. The Jets first four possesions they were held to 0 points. Then Crumpler drops the ball in the end zone and NE is leading by 3 instead of 10 or 14. To make it worse they don't score again until the 3rd quarter. In the first half the Jets scored TD's on drives that started at their 46 yard line and NE's 37. So the offense/ST's supported the defense by giving the Jets the ball at the Jets 46 yard line or better to start a drive 3 times. Twice in New England territory.

Jets starting field position in the first half:
NYJ-32;NE-12;NYJ-40;NYJ-46;NYJ-25;NE-37;

The same will hold true this year if the offense/ST's fail to show up and play. Winning and losing will come down to the offense playing the same way they do during the regular season. The defense is what the defense is, they will allow a team to score between 20 and 24 points - unless, the offense puts pressure on the other team, increasing the odds for our defense to cause turnovers.

I don't blame that on the defense, that is who they are and how they have played all season. If the offense shows up and only scores 11 points through three quarters or 14 through 58 minutes, like they did last year. Then that will be the end of the 2011 season.

I think getting homefield advantage could be huge because as Walker pointed out, most of the AFC teams in the playoffs or might get in are not good road teams. That will be big playing in Foxboro.

"Just as good as the Saints and Packers" isn't a strong argument for having a defense.

But it IS a strong argument for contending for the Super Bowl.

Fair point, but I look to the past when trying to predict the Pats defensive performance in the playoffs this year:

2005 - The Pats defense did a tremendous job on the road at Denver. Picks and fumbles put them in terrible position but they still kept the game winnable, but the offense had a terrible day.

2006 - Giving up 4 TDs in the 2nd half at Indy was a massive defensive breakdown, but that breakdown was physical...heat (80+ degrees), fatigue (4th roadie in 5 weeks, including SD the week before) and illness. Holding the Colts to 6 points in the first half while getting a pick 6 should have been enough.

2007 - The game that shan't be named wasn't a defensive failure...apart from a couple of missed opportunities that would have ended the game. While the offense picked the worst possible time to get sluggish, I do blame the defensive gameplan for allowing the opening soul-crushing 10 minute drive that set the tone for the rest of the game.

2009 - Outside of the opening play (a result of Wilfork/Warren playing much less than 100%), the defense didn't have a chance. The Ravens started most drives already in scoring position and decided that they didn't need to pass. It is liberating to know that all you need to do is get 3.4 ypc and even if you fail you can still kick a FG.

2010 - The only points the Jets could manage in the 1st 3 quarters started on drives in Pats territory. The Pats offense pissed away opportunities to take an early lead and that lead to Sanchez feeling no pressure to do anything but not lose the game (when he is at his best). The botched play that let Cotchery rumble for 50+ yards was the only defensive issue in the game.

So what do these playoff losses tell us about the Pats?
1) The offense needs to be efficient and not put the defense behind the 8-ball.
2) Don't let the opposition think that they are dictating the flow of the game. Don't allow them to shorten the game or operate well within their comfort zone...even if that means being exposed on a deep pass.
3) When turnover opportunities present themselves, take advantage.
4) Blow up any receiver operating in the middle of the field. Don't look for an overthrow or tipped ball...light up the receiver.

Can the Pats do this?
1) The offense is wildly efficient. If Gronk, Hernandez and Welker are 100% healthy, Brady should be able to find quick mismatches on just about any play.
2) This relates to the gameplan and is my biggest worry. Against anyone in the AFC, the Pats win if the game becomes a track meet (or is at least perceived to be that way). A 3-play touchdown drive is actually less destructive than a 19-play FG drive in a one-n-done situation.
3) I'm supremely confident in the ability of the offense to limit turnovers. The defense has shown a knack of getting their share of turnovers. Even better if the forced fumble tendencies of last week can become a habit.
4) This is the reason why Meriweather and Sanders are on new teams. Sanders was never close enough to hit anyone and Meriweather was only good at generating penalties. Chung and Ihedigbo have the potential but need to put it into practice. Mayo and Spikes need to get greater depth in their drops but can bring the lumber if they get in position.

So if they stay relatively healthy and Belichick releases the hounds, I'm actually pretty confident. The thinking that Belichick doesn't fully realize the player capabilities he has and won't be able to develop an opponent-specific gameplan (which he really hasn't done this year) in the playoffs...well that just doesn't wash with history.

"Just as good as the Saints and Packers" isn't a strong argument for having a defense.

The Patriots are ranked last in Defense, therefore the Saints and Packers do indeed have a better defense....I understand that's not saying much, but let's not pretend that the Pats Defense (specifically the pass defense) is not going to be an issue in the post season.

Reason 5: It's in Indy and the combination of the Colts going 1-15 and the Patriots winning the SB in their house, priceless for us and agonizing for them.

I'm going to throw in one more reason we might make the Superbowl here - Brady seems pretty healthy right now.

In 2007 he went through the playoffs injured, in 2009 he was still not 100% back from the knee injury, and last year he was playing through injuries again. The level of play gets a little more intense in the playoffs, and I don't think he's had that extra gear at the end of the past few seasons. Hopefully that changes this year.

And Green Bay is ranked 31st and New Orleans is just as bad. The point is that if the pats can not be considered contenders for the SB because of a weak D, then you have to say the same for Green bay and new orleans.

And for the record, the saints are one of the worst teams in the league in turnovers. They are almost in a WORSE position than the pats who at least take the ball away.

No.

They are not ranked "last in Defense". They are last in one measure of a Defense.

Don't hand in sloppy work. ;)

NO's defensive stats are downright weird. They allow about the same amount of points as the Pats and GB but their 3rd down D is outstanding. NO Red Zone D is 31st.

Yet, those are the two teams commonly considered to be the two best in the NFL.

I agree with Walker..I do get a different sense with this team. They have been having close games and WINNING them. There has not been any blowout minus the Pitts game, yet they were still very much in it despite being thoroughly outplayed on the road. Has it been pretty with the defense..no! However, the defense has only lost only 1 game this season if you really think about it. They have been consistent despite what the experts say. Of course their have been moments like the Denver 1st quarter or the Colts game at the end, but there has been positives also. And its not like any team has layed down for the Pats during their win streak, so they will be playoff ready regardless..Plus the NE offense is probably the most dominating unit in the AFC right now. Yup, better than the Ravens, Steelers, and Texans defenses at the moment.

Amazing right? I don't know if its the anti-Patriots thing or what..I look at some of these polls online and just laugh how they justify the rankings and often mention the Pats defense but NO and GB defense barely gets a mention.
