3. I think NFL.com writer Jeff Darlington's piece out of Denver last night gives you a good view into Tim Tebow that you may have heard about but didn't know how it worked. Each game, home and road, Tebow has as his guest a young person who has gone through some medical or personal struggle, and win or lose, he spends 15 to 30 minutes with the person and his/her family afterward. On Sunday, after the loss to New England, Tebow met with brain-tumor victim Kelly Faughnan and her family. While Tebow and Kelly spoke, her father said to Darlington: "I can't begin to tell you the impact he's had on my daughter. She's very positive, and she tries so hard, but she's had a struggle. Tim Tebow has built her self-confidence up so much -- taught her to believe in herself -- that when I see people criticize him, I'm just dumbfounded. I don't get it. It's almost incomprehensible to me. I don't understand why anyone wouldn't want to see an athlete use his position and platform to do good for people." And that's Tebow. Forget his religion, forget his politics (if he has any). He's a good person who does good things. He's not the only one, and we in the media are remiss pointing out what other players do. But that shouldn't be a criticism of Tebow. I've found him genuine, as the dad says.

Great story, and I agree w/ the sentiments expressed. I don't get the animosity toward the guy. They did a mik'd up on NFL live yesterday for this game against Chicago, and I don't think I have ever heard a more positive player, or a more natural leader.

Much rather have guys like that representing the sport than, say, the Suhs & Harrisons of the world...

I think he's great for the NFL and wish him nothing but success. Have no problem with his faith and never thought he really flaunted it like some people say.

I don't get the animosity toward the guy.

It's a subtle difference, and one that I don't think that your average football fan appreciates or even cares about for that matter, but I think the animosity is not really for Tebow. Instead, it's animosity toward people that project their own stuff on Tebow, or perhaps even for the projection itself. Then, of course, there is the outrageous hype machine. I think as Patriots fans, we're pretty well positioned to understand how coverage can ultimately have a severe rebound effect. It really didn't take the Patriots long to go from beloved underdogs with a genius coach to reviled. Some of the Tebow backlash is that same story in microcosm. It's not his fault that he's been annointed by the hype machine, yet, he'll suffer the backlash. He seems like a genuinely good dude, who makes the world a better place. But he's also been cast, by central casting, as the good looking white Jesus dude who plays the most popular position in sports and won some games late, and in 24 hour media/sports coverage 2011 America, there is simply no way that won't be polarizing.

The media -- and in particular in politics and entertainment -- simply loves to build people up to tear them down. They do this, because we all demand it. We are, fundamentally, cannibals when it comes to hype of any sort. As soon as the media starts to run a story that goes anything like this: "Are we covering X too much?" -- you know that X is going to get some backlash.

But, all that said, Tebow has far more fans than detractors. I was at the Cardinals game yesterday, and in between plays, they show out of town happenings. Every time they mentioned the Patriots game, and announcer said the word "Tebow," a huge cheer rippled through the crowd.

I do kinda root for him but I still don't like his 'in your face' Christianity. I mean, c'mon, we all know what he believes, is it really necessary for him to thank Jesus at the beginning of every interview? Suppose an athiest football player started his interviews by saying "I want to thank evolution and Richard Dawkins that there is no God", we'd probably all think that guy's a complete tool, and we'd be right.

Long story short, if someone's Christian I'd be a whole lot more impressed with them if they spent time helping others rather than talking about how they're a Christian. Tebow actually does walk the walk, which makes me respect him, though I think he'd actually be a whole lot more effective if he talked less.

It's weird, really, that I've seen far more complaints about the animosity towards Tebow than actual animosity towards Tebow. In fact, I haven't really seen any real animosity toward him at all. I've seen some people question whether he deserves as much credit as he gets for the Broncos' success, but anyone who mistakes that for animosity has their terms pretty fundamentally mixed up.

As soon as I saw him walk over to carter and give him a pat on the helmet while he was down and give him a few words it made me realize this an excellent young man. He may not have the god like arm () of Brady but regardless of his actions on the field he seems like a genuinely good person.

The one person that gets the most hate for their off the field behavior and character issues is the guy who uses his money not to hire hookers but to care for orphans and the terminally ill.

I don't get it.

Plenty of people acknowledge that Tim Tebow seems like a fantastic guy. Plenty of people also realize he's a religious fanatic. Being able to draw that distinction appears problematic for some.

Tebow's young and idealistic. We were all the same at some point.

Definitely a good guy. I think he always has been. That was never really the question I think. I think it's more about "does he have the skill to be a legitimate NFL QB".

I think after seeing him yesterday, he is immeasurably better then he was the first few games, so his game is evolving. It may just evolve to the point where he becomes much more respected (football wise) then he is now.

But it's never been about his character or personality. At least not in the criticism I hear.

If Tebow ultimately fails as a starting QB and is relegated to a lesser role, it would not surprise me to see him quit football altogether and enter missionary work like his parents. The Broncos have a real dilemma with this kid, because of the style of offense they must commit to for him to have any kind of success. I don't think they want to commit to him long term.

Tebow is about as good a person as you are going to find in terms of an athlete who is not only making big money but is about as humble as can be .... almost angel-like from what I see.

Like everyone NOT the REAL JESUS,he has his imprefections such as Quarterback,but you won't find a nicer guy in the league to like.

Whatever happened outside of Woods marriage vows are hardly comparable to what Vick did.

Seems that people are more hung up on Tebow's horrible and terrible preaching as a character flaw than the less desireable behavior of many other players.

I like the kid too, but my issue with Tim, and honestly it's not his fault, is that these stories seem to define his football life as well.

How many guys do stuff like this, and never get the press, or never want the press. I'm guessing quite a few. How many are religious and take part in the post game prayer or pray for a kick to sail thru the uprights, a lot. Why is Tebow a story??

He's a good kid, and he's doing the right things. I guess that makes the football story more compeling.

I don't know. For the sake of many, I hope he does not go Tiger Woods on the public.
