What class of ILB in the league do you place him?
Patrick Willis class?
How do you rate him? Should the D be built around him or should the team look for more help inside?

He's very good.

He's no Patrick Willis.

I would love to see him make more big plays.

He is elite, but Patrick willis is out of this world so he is not just there yet, but he is one of the best.

He does what he is asked to do, he is a great guy to have on your team, a student of the game and a work out warrior.

He is above average, but would not put him in the elite class.. perhaps if he was surrounded by more depth and quality, he may be considered such.

This year his role has completely changed...

Is it too harsh to say he's elite when it comes to reliably tackling opponents after a 5-yard gain?

Is it too harsh to say he's elite among the NFL linebackers who never make a game-changing play?

BB apparently has total faith in the guy. He wears the green dot and plays every defensive snap when he's healthy. That must count for a lot, right?

I want to believe!

Help me out folks!

i cant think of 5 better ILB's then him so he's in the top five and that makes him elite

No. Jerod is a good player. Thought he's be more of an impact player than he's turned out to be.

Elite players are game changers.. Mayo isn't a game changer.. He's a solid player and part of the perception is because he was a top ten pick, he's elite.

Is Mayo not a game changer because he lacks the ability, or because BB has a very specific role for him that prevents him from making higher risk/higher reward plays that would show up on ESPN and appease the mouth-breathing anti-Mayo crowd?

it doesn't matter........

mayo does have the ability......he is far more athletic than tedy bruschi......he just doesn't see the game in slow motion the way bruschi did

I do think part of this is because of the stiffs he's surrounded by......if the pats had barwin and reed on the outside, mayo's job would be much more consistent and he'd be able to focus solely on the zones in the middle and develop the instinct to read better....now he is simply forced to run around all over the place

Well, there's a positive. If Mayo hasn't reached his ceiling because he's bailing out the jag LBs around him, maybe the playmaking Mayo will emerge if BB enhances the LB corps.

mayo is a damned good player and an even better person......I just hope he will still want to be here after next year

Really? How the hell did you get inside Bruschi's head? Was that when he had his stroke? Shame on you.

He was playing at elite level, but then he got that knee injury a few years ago, and it seems to have slowed him down. For half that year after he came back from the injury you could see he was noticeably limping.

I actually heard him say as much in an interview......so F*** YOU

If Mayo moves on after next year, will the Mayo era be remembered for having the worst defenses of BB's entire NEP tenure?

Added: In contrast with the 3x Super Bowl champion Bruschi defense.

it is one factor.....here's alist of items that bruschi had to help him focus:
richard seymour
ty law
rodney harrison
willie mcginest
mike vrabel
ted washington
roman phifer

the point was that bruschi never had to worry about what the guy adjacent to him on all sides not doing his job.

mayo has the following guys adjacent to him:
rob ninkovich
guyton/spikes
chung (or whoever is in there when he is hurt)
arrington
kyle love
vince wilfork

a bit of a fall-off if you ask me

I like Mayo, but don't think he's in the Elite class. He's a very good LB. It certainly seems both seasons with the MCL sprain, his performance has taken a hit. I'll wait to see how he does in the playoffs. :rocker:

Well said Mayo needs to make more Big Plays to be considered an Elite. Ps Patrick Willis had two picks and force fumble in Madden 12 against me.;)

I see your point somewhat IllegalContact but the 49ers D wasn't always as good as it is this year....But Patrick Willis always stood out. We need to Mayo to make more of an Impact he has more Speed that any LB we ever had...i want to see it put to good use.
