Could Pats Secondary Woes Be Traced To Offense?
By: Steve Balestrieri

Perhaps the biggest miscalculation this summer could have been that the Patriots coaches thought this defense was better in man coverage because of the success they had against their own offense....

I absolutely agree with this article and will take it a step further. The Patriots DBs get torched by larger WRs.....Detroit in preseason, SD, etc... because they never practice against physical, fast WRs.....because they don't exist on their roster. (I have to believe Ras I Dowling was going to be the big WR defender)

And as far as WR speed goes, the Pats have none....so sure, our DBs look capable against Branch and Stinko. But the fact is our latest crop of DBs are deficient in the wheels department....hence the zone...aka Soft Zone....aka ....Orlovsky 4th qtr magic.
For this reason alone, I fear that the nightmare playoff matchup for NE is Pitt. Wallace and Brown will roam free on our boys. Verses Pitt, man coverage ain't happening....hence the Pats will be forced to play alot of soft zone....leading to numerous goal line D's.... hoping for FGs. Unfortunately, the Pitt D will slow Brady down enough and a low scoring game favors Pitt....sorry

Disagree . if you think sanchez and bronco`s qb help revis and bailey become better defenders then others i will be shocked.

The biggest issue is kyle has takens a step forward and sadly no 32 is in position in every one of his catches. he used to turn around at the right moment and either knock the ball or intercept last year. that 1 little timing seem to be off.He used to compete a completion that is what is missing now.

he has 5 weeks to get a little of this going. if he gets this timing down and works on it ,we are going for a run in the Playoff.

What? QBs aren't being discussed. WR vs DBs on the practice field is the discussion

did i miss something, they did practice vs Brady Welker and Gronk all year right ?

Week 1....Brandon Marshall....7 for 139.......which Pats receiver can Pats DBs practice against that slightly resemble Marshall........Welker??

Week 2....Vincent Jackson....10 for 172........hmmmm a pattern. If memory seves me correctly, VJ was doubled and tripled all game, but he was a superior athlete in speed/strength/leaping....no contest

Week 3....3 WRs and 1RB caught 5 or more passes each for 80 or more yds each. WRs are 6'0", 6'1.5", 6'5"

Week 4....Heyward Bey....6'2" 210 lbs....4 for 115

vs Jets....kept Plax in check.....slow ex-con

vs KC...Bowe 7-87yds....managed to mininimize the deadly Palko-Bowe combo

Bottomline.....Pats struggle vs the big WR, often getting dominated. Yes, these are great players, but many of these guys had their best output vs the vaunted Pats secondary. Please help me learn how practicing against Welker or Branch gets our DBs prepped for the WR beasts of the NFL.

Revis is clearly a product of WRs like Braylon Edwards and Plax.

they just ant good a nuff to stop Good/great WR's last year they had Moss for half a season it's dont get any bigger and faster then him they still did not stop anyone if anything they got better when he left

Revis gets to practice against a miniburner and a tall ex-con. McCourty gets to cover Branch's curl pattern or Wes on his 3rd yd crossing pattern. Which Pats WR is running sideline posts...the pattern QB/WRs are burning McCourty on each game....Stinko?

McCourty was all world last year (Thanks MOSS)....not this year. Sure I'm reaching some....but be honest, without a physical beast to match up against daily, how can these guys be prepared to succeed vs the the V Jax of the league....they can't and they don't.

This is the most interesting way of saying we need a "big, physical deep threat" I've seen yet.

Doesn't the starting offensive unit spend most of its time practicing against the opposing reserves and scout team, and visa versa?

Maybe they got complacent covering the routes run by Taylor Price. :D

Numbers don't lie.....

1) Big WRs destroy our DBs
2) Brady sets records with big WRs

The two birds one stone theory....run with it

McCourty doesn't even bother covering Stinko....Stinko either runs the wrong route, drops the ball, or goes all crazy legs and trips over himself.

Not buying this AT ALL. If this logic were true:

we'd have no problem stopping Rodgers since we get to practice against Brady
we should have a top C since our C practices against Vince.
NYJ must have great receivers since they practice against Revis.
Flacco is close to an elite QB after facing a top defense in practice for 3 years.
Etc

Word is Gronk is pretty upset w/ you for not identifying him as a physical beast. Stay safe.

My grades on the article:

A+ for creativity, new angle, reporting something nobody else has reported.

F for logic, relevence, or having a rational point.
